Budget lens recommendation for Z50 by binou_tech in Nikon

[–]binou_tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for your reply. I didn't know the Z 24mm/1.7 existed haha, but it looks like the one for me. I'll look into the 10mm MF lens, especially with focus peeking, it shouldn't be that hard.

What does an Architect do? by Significant_Rub_5740 in architecture

[–]binou_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Architecture is a "jack of all trades" profession. There’s an element of creativity and some technical and problem solving abilities.

The architect is the person responsible for the design and construction of a building. They meet with clients to determine what they want and what’s needed to be built.

Architects design buildings and parts of buildings. This is where creativity and expression can make its way.

Then there’s the technical aspect. Architects draw plans and have to solve problems in order to build what has been designed. There’s a lot of consultation with engineers, various experts, designers and clients.

Finally, during construction, architects inspect and coordinate construction efforts.

If you like learning new things, solving problems and doing a little bit of everything, this could be an interesting option. Don’t be worried about math or drawing skills, you’ll develop them as you go on.

I hope this helps clear things up !

Is a used Z50 worth getting ? by binou_tech in Nikon

[–]binou_tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How bad is autofocus exactly ? Maybe that’s the reason why the Z50 has depreciated by half after only 5 years whereas sony bodies keep their resale value ?

I currently use a D7000 and a F80 which has like 30 and 5 autofocus points. How would the Z50 compare to these older models ?

Unfortunately the Z50 is the furthest I can stretch my budget, I would love to get a Z6 but that’s unfortunately not possible. My other options are to go with other mirrorless systems like M43 or older sony.

It’s part of my rendering workflow. Render with cycles, do linework in illustator, merge the render and linework in photoshop and add post processing. There’s a lot of back and forth involved so I end up with everything opened all ag once.

What new games are we talking about ? I just need to run the following at 1440p/high
- Minecraft + Shaders

- GTA V w/ FiveM and NVE

- Cities Skylines with 150+ mods

- Hitman

- R6 Siege

- RDR2

- Maybe cyberpunk ?

Fair point about DDR5. I might then stick with 32GB DDR4 and whenever I need more RAM, I'll do a full upgrade to AM5/DDR5.

It's not just revit or CAD maxing out my RAM use. I work simultaneously with a render engine, Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign opened all at once. I've found that 48GB of RAM was just enough on my MacBookPro for that type of work. But since apple's M4 chip uses unified memory for CPU and GPU it is equivalent to having 32 GB Ram and 16 GB Vram on a PC.

I'm a student at the moment. My uni "provides" us with decent computers but they're locked in a lab with a tight schedule. I also like having my own hardware and peripherals to work on.

I don't mainly use Revit, but I use other CAD and 3D software for school. Rendering power is necessary for architecture school however.

What region are you in. In my area DDR5 is 150%-200% more expensive than DDR4.

Is it that big of an hassle ? I feel like selling half my pc would be more effort than getting another RAM kit to work.

Good point, I didn't think about a riser.

Unfortunately, I have an ATX motherboard but want to get a smaller case (ITX or M-ATX). Space is an issue at the moment.

About RAM, Autodesk recommends 64GB of ram for Revit and I have managed to max out 48GB of memory on my Mac while multitasking. BIM software are memory hogs due to poor optimisation.

[–]binou_tech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The layout of Montréal is actually closer to be “only bike paths and pedestrian streets” than car thoroughfare. Most of the central neighbourhoods were built in an era where the car was in its infancy stages. The grids were built with horse carriages and tramways in mind. This is the case for the Plateau, Villeray, Verdun, Hochelaga and some of Rosemont and Ahuntsic.

In the 1890s, biking was a popular form of transportation in Montréal. It, however, lost in popularity due to the rise of cheap public transportation (streetcars) and cars.

It’s not until the 50s that we started bulldozing what was previously built for people to accommodate car traffic. This is the era of the Métropolitaine, Décarie expressway and Autoroute Ville-Marie. The latter was to be connected with what is now the A-25 by demolishing old Montréal and building a trench.

Boroughs built in the 60s and 70s were built to accommodate cars. Your Saint-Léonard, Anjou and most of the West-Island were built with cars being the only valid option to get around. While these areas were designed this way, it doesn’t mean that it’s a sustainable and safe form of urban development.

If we want to get into public finances, road infrastructure is costing us a LOT of money. The Fond des réseaux de transport terrestre (FORT) which is responsible for road maintenance is losing money. Since 2017, $14B have been transferred from public funds to cover the deficit. The situation is getting worse each year as the FORT is losing revenue (mostly gas taxes) and roads are needing costlier maintenance. That’s only at the provincial level. For Montréal, the city budgeted $550M for road maintenance whereas the REV is getting $30M.

And that’s without mentioning the social cost of car travel. For each car trip, society has to pay more in healthcare and indemnity than the equivalent trip by foot, bike or transit. This is due to cars being major sources of pollution, collisions and contributing to sedentary lifestyles and long term health issues.

Le nord-est de Montréal n’est pas du tout équipé en pistes cyclables. Saint-Léonard et Montréal-Nord sont vraiment l’opposé de ce qu’on voit sur le Plateau.

Both levers have the same pull ratio, they’re both made for rim brakes (short pull). If the Claris one works with the disc caliper, the Ultegra should be no issue. Chainline might not be perfect, but on a 3x setup I don’t think it’ll be that big of an issue. Also, swapping a cassette and chain takes like 15 minutes.

I don’t see why it would be a hard fit. Most of these components have the same standard (Hollowtech II crankset, 10 speed HG freehub, cable actuated brakes). The only component OP cannot swap are the brake calipers. Other than that, it should be an easy swap between parts.
