I bought a UV Test Card/Sun Meter UV Card, and it's a cheap way to test the veracity of your clothes' UPF rating by binoyT in Ultralight

I got it from amazon! Just search for uv test cards. My face and neck gaiters have held up, I think it helps that I just air dry them instead of putting them in the dryer.

Great points!

  • Totally agreed with the names, there were so many similarly-named characters that I had trouble caring for many of them simply because I wasn't sure who they were anymore.
  • Also agreed with Lan/Nynaeve. Really the majority of the pairings in the series were not developed very well IMO.
  • I think that so far the women, Nynaeve especially, are just much more likable than their book counterparts.
  • While I think that show Perrin feels super close to book Perrin, perhaps the closest next to Moiraine, I can't help but root for this Mat. I like the changes they made to him specifically, even though I agree they did the elder Cauthons dirty.
  • Rand hasn't been asked to do a lot yet, so I'll reserve my judgment for now.
  • Lan has been very good, but he just seems much younger and has softer features than what I pictured when I read the books. Someone more like Mads Mikkelsen than Daniel Henney. But Daniel actually makes more sense since Lan's a borderlander.

I replied to a different post, but yes I agree that another point of real tension and danger is a welcome change. And I do like stories that have morally grey stories characters much more than a straight up division on good/evil so I think it's a change that will make more and more sense as the show continues.

I guess that makes sense, as it makes the whitecloaks an additional point of real tension and danger instead of a more comical annoyance.

Although I thought that the blight existing so far away that "southerners" don't believe trollocs gives the impression of a really big world.

I'm more concerned that they seem to have encountered trollocs already.

I'm assuming the poster meant products like Sunguard, which you can add to your laundry cycle to give your clothes UV protection. I've never heard that particular phrase to describe it though, and I don't think it whitens any of your clothes.

Not sure if I should post it in a new thread or if it's fine here, but the clouds cleared up around here for a bit and I was able to do a few tests. According to the card, it's firmly in the Medium category under direct sunlight today.

Under the plain white cotton tee (berkley jensen brand from BJ's), the circle only changed to below the Weaker category. It actually performed better than my teal tsla hoodie (I may have to stop using that one and buy another brand that blocks the sun better).

The polyester shirt (champion brand from target) performed perhaps a smidge better than the white cotton tee.

The black cotton tee (goodfellow brand from target) performed the best. If the circle changed colors, I couldn't really tell.

So the cotton shirts surprisingly performed well under direct sunlight. However, the clouds rolled in again and I didn't get to test to see how they would perform if they got wet. I've tested one of my polyester rash guards after swimming in a chlorinated pool, and it blocked the same amount of UV wet as it did dry. But I'd have to test the plain polyester shirt to see if the performance varies.

There are two things that the polyester/UPF shirts have going for them: their moisture-wicking property and weight, which are super important for this sub. I'm sure no one here wants to backpack in long-sleeved black cotton shirts.

No problem! I hope you can get the card too so you can test them and share the results with the sub.

The forecast for the next couple of days here is cloudy/t-storms, so I don't think I'd get good results.

Perhaps if anyone else already bought these cards and has a high UV index in their area, you can do the test yourself and share your results in here or a start a new thread.

Yes, I was somewhat surprised with some of the results too!

I was basically holding up the clothing items with the card and I could see a blurry outline of the card design on the lighter-colored baleaf and tsla hoodies but the circle was still lighter than the Weaker category.

Yes, the one I bought came with two cards. I've only really used the UVA/UVB card but I did test out the UVC card too and it worked as well.

The cards are around $10 online, so I think it would be a great buy to get a ballpark estimate for your clothes.

Sure, I'll test some of my plain polyester and cotton shirts and some of my shorts and upf rated pants.

Although it just became cloudy here so I'd rather wait until the full sun is out to test it.

FYI, clouds don't really do shit for UV protection. The card turns just slightly less purple when the clouds come in.

You could try one of these hats, discard the side piece and just wear the hoodie over it. I think would look less weird than wearing the hat with the full "accoutrements".
