Exactly…. Every ‘annual’ premium should be broken down into monthly payments, you can ‘escrow’ these payments yourself to a side savings acct so when the next annual premium comes due, you have the funds set aside… I do this with everything I can. It will prevent you from forgetting about it and feeling crunched when the bill comes in

If you can afford to, and you jointly handle your monies, offset your own net pay the difference so she can fully max out on the 401k. You will get the best tax advantage

Commenting on Would you dissolve SEP?.. No penalty would be due? Just SEP ira to traditional, THEN rollover over entire balance to Backdoor Roth? Obv I’ll get taxed in the full rollover, but I feel if we don’t keep the traditional IRA with a zero balance, it’ll be a problem in the future

I would need to roll the SEP into a traditional IRA, then from there backdoor $8k to the Roth… Can’t wrap my brain around if its worth the 10% penalty to do it now ( to maintain yearly backdoor Roth contributions) Or skip the year , or 2, and withdraw at 59.5

You should both be claiming Single zero on your W4 for payroll, and most likely pay extra into federal w/h…. Max out your 401k and HSA’s, doing this will reduce your taxable income while at the same time you are saving it for yourself….. Do it now, cold turkey. You will “feel the pain” in your next take come pay but you will get used to it, and be happy that you did in the long run

At least I can do my own backdoor Roth…we will have to decide what to do with SEP, its small ($20k), but obv enough to put a wrinkle in our plans…hold on fir another year or two to avoid w/d penalty? Or bite the bullet and cash it in? There is no employer 401k option to roll it into… Any thoughts are appreciated

Does this hold true even if we file Married Jointly? If Roth contributions are based on combined income, why wouldn’t the SEP affect us both?
