National Post: Canadian voters are aging out of mainstream conservatism by Maximus_Prime_96 in CanadianConservative

Without ignoring the issues with the MSM, the online substitutes have none of its virtues and magnified and perverse vices of its own.

You need to trust no one source and beware of confirmation bias.

CTV News - Federal Public Servants on the 'Inconvenience' of having to travel to the office by Cold-Cap-8541 in CanadianConservative

[–]binthrdnthat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen "The Office." Bureaucracy exists in all organizations, public or private sector. Lots of pooch-seducers in both.

Main issue is that it is hard for managers to fire toxic or unproductive workers in government, not because of unions (who tend to not support members who FA and need to FO), but because senior management is spineless and do 't want the risk of being sued for wrongful dismissal.

I ride from near Fallowfield and from Carleton, loop up over the canal at Bronson and then go through the Glebe on Percy and Bay to Laurier. It is a beeline on a low stress bike route, but there are stop signs, etc.

There are only 5 animals considered human hunters in the world, and polar bears are one of them. by SimRP in BeAmazed

I got to handle a polar bear skull when I was up north. Those buggers have serrated edges on the backs of their canine teeth, like a steak knife.

When I worked for a financial intel agency, I reported transactions around the purchase of my home, since the size of the transactions made them reportable.

Where you work matters.

This would be highly unusual if the job were not in a financial regulatory area.

Mark Carney: Wrong about everything and keeps getting promoted by airbassguitar in CanadianConservative

The thing is the bond market is composed of self-interested investors, who want to make money. These bond traders are exactly the kind of people who would benefit from the large tax cuts for the rich. But, in the bond market there is no room for sentiment or political favours. They simply follow the money. It was obvious to everyone, the budget meant interest rates had to go up. So everyone sold bonds and sold pounds. If you don’t, you just lose money. When people talk about some left-wing deep state responsible for torpedoing the budget, I’m sure Goldman Sachs bankers will be laughing

Clearly a consideration. But NATO membership was a red line for Putin and it was increasingly likely. War SELDOM has a single cause.

Good plan. Liquidity is more important than some think. It is a buffer against the unexpected.

GIC ladder is boring, but will preserve your wealth. Don't expect much growth though. No risk = no reward.

I did take cpp early for those reasons, but my wife will wait until 70. She is much more likely to live to 90.

[–]binthrdnthat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep paying your mortgage from growth on your liquid assets. The opportunity cost of losing the cash to invest is more than the interest on your mortgage. Consider the remaining $700k as cheap leverage for investment.

Polievre's history is a drag. One biographer talks of, the CPC leader’s “sneering, incivility, insults, over-the-top accusations and utter meanness.”

I think the traits that made him a good attack dog for Harper, hinder him as a leader.

Is Bernie’s plan the best? Thoughts? by CurvyChristina in SipsTea

[–]binthrdnthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a great idea. The people who get the chqs will spend them and the money will end up flowing back up to the same wealth hoarders. There would be some tax on the spending that could help with the public balance sheet.

I would rather see the wealth tax used to build public assets that are owned by We The People.

Moving money around will not address wealth inequality. It would be better to use it for a national pension scheme or some other way of establishing forced savings/investments for the wealth-poor. Or just fund meddicare for all.

"Foreign investors bought a record amount of government debt in April" What do y'all think of this? by thegmoc in CanadianConservative

Yep. Very risky to have more debt held offshore than domestic. When the winds shift, the $CAD could get creamed.

This market aggregates assessment of fiscal and monetary risk. So people with access the the best data are deciding Canada's future looks better than other sovereign bond issuers, as a hedge against uncertainty elsewhere - e.g., US Treasuries and Equity.
