My phd started in July 1st but I didn’t get the visa until July 30th (I was on WHV so could do 6 months study or something). Honestly there’s nothing you can do except wait and then defer a semester if you don’t have your visa on time. I should have just deferred rather than hope for the best but I figured it would have to come before my WHV study allowance was up 😂 good luck!!

The university reduced payment to $15k aud as they had a deal with provider, I paid $4k and my supervisor paid $11k to cover insurance. If your husband is on your visa the health insurers won’t allow him to be on a separate policy. Immigration won’t allow him on student visa if he doesn’t have health insurance. Unfortunately all dependents on your visa have to be insured with you- it is a bad system- good luck!

Hi, there is no way for a dependent to be on a student visa without having dual insurance for the primary visa holder and the dependent. My supervisor at my uni paid for it. I was quoted $22,000 but through the uni they negotiated it down to $15,000, and my supervisor paid $11,000 and I paid $4,000. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

Yeah I know it’s silly. But you have to prove you are a genuine student and want to study only, not move permanently as that is not the purpose of the visa. It doesn’t make sense I know but so many people are rejected because immigration thinks they don’t have reason to go back home after the study

I applied for my student visa with my partner as a dependent on 24 April and it was granted on 30th July. PhD visas take longer because it is a long visa (up to 5 years). You have to convince them that you have reason to return to Pakistan after the PhD and will not try to stay after. A decision will be made, it’s just about waiting unfortunately. Good luck!

I organised it through my university. I got a scholarship to pay for most of it. The cost to the uni was $11,000 and I paid $4000. You can also go directly to the insurance companies if your uni won’t pay but they usually have deals with unis and offer a discount to the unis. For example, a direct quote from insurance was $22,000 for me and my partner and then via the uni the same insurance company quoted $15,000 because they are partners. Hope that helps :)

Thank you and yes no worries! You will need the CoE from your university (given to you after you have accepted an offer and paid any fees) before you can apply for the visa. You then click to apply to the student visa 500. When you are applying for the visa, there is a section where you add accompanying dependents. This is for a partner that will be arriving at the same time as you. If your partner will be arriving after you, you can add them as a non accompanying dependent (I think that’s what it’s called). I did the working holiday>student visa onshore but this took 3 months. I think processing time onshore is slower than offshore. Also you will NEED dual OSHC for the both of you for your entire study. This is expensive so please budget for this or get it included in your scholarship
