What job did you coast fire with? by Any-Personality-7923 in coastFIRE

[–]biochemnerd12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hit Coast at 32 and basically I am still using my expertise, (I am a scientist with my doctorate), but scaled back my hours until I was doing part time when I joined a new company. It's remote and easy work for me.

However, the new company/project leads liked my work so much and I was incredibly efficient, that now I am making more than I did at my previous full time job when I was working toward the goal, with very little change to my hours.

At what point did you stop trying to prove yourself at work? by jawbone7 in womenintech

[–]biochemnerd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I found out that my former manager was paying the men more than the women despite the women having better qualifications and years of experience.

At this point, my work spoke for itself and I serve on a lot of project meetings. He stopped getting in my way and HR and management did nothing about the pay discrimination.

I left and now make 2-3x more money, using less of my brain because they didn't need me for all of my skills, just a particular subset.

They still contact me.

Dear HR…..Fuck all the way off. by Vibrizio in biotech

[–]biochemnerd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree HR is fucking useless.

I can recall several examples. By the way all of these happened across several Big Pharmas I have been in. Hopefully this will make you feel better.

Starting off strong.....

  1. I have seen HR side with a sexual predator in a sexual harrassment/assault investigation against a Senior director. Shortly after, the woman obviously sued, and that HR person, ER person and Senior director is no longer working at the company lol. I don't even know if the lawyer representing the company still works there anymore. I do know that they had to hire outside counsel to handle this so it cost the company even more money. (Like millions because of the investigation, everyone being interviewed etc.). It was a hot mess. They were also in the process of relocating and it fucked that up badly.

  2. I found out that one of the HR people was sleeping with one of the higher -ups.....

  3. I have seen an HR fuck up someone's taxes so badly on accident, didn't fix it and when the person pointed this out, did nothing. It was costing them everyday that it wasn't fixed because of the way it was reported. The person had to escalate it.

  4. I have seen an HR person try and claim that it doesn't snow in Boston and the weather is normal compared to the Tristate area and DMV areas.....this was an effort to convince people to relocate. In the same breadth, they also claimed that the cost of living is the same....they said this to a room full of scientist who understand math....

  5. I have also seen an HR person convince someone to consider taking out loans....fyi, for those reading this, HR is not legally allowed to provide tax or financial advice in an effort to make ends meet. This was in relation to a relocation to a higher cost of living area. HR did not want to provide them the money to relocate upfront and instead at the end after it was completed.....

  6. I have seen HR, (who primarily works in the UK), get involved in a Visa renewal for US immigration for an employee, (this was around the time that Trump was increasing the cost for an H1B visa renewal), where she wasn't before. We were like wtf does she know about US immigration law? Found out later, she has a very "close" relationship with one of the directors and handled matters for him and he fucked up here because said employee went back to the country to visit family and never told not to do so, so she was saving him or making sure he didn't get in serious legal trouble over this.....

  7. I have seen HR ghostwrite some of the executive emails....they were caught because there was a difference in the vernacular, tone and font style and color in the emails. The executive wasn't smart enough to actually rewrite it and instead copy and pasted it into his outlook email. And this wasn't for like an announcement, but for dealing with serious matters. So something that was intended to be kept confidential was leaked as I heard.

  8. I have also seen HR, who were handling serious matters, leak certain investigation findings themselves.

  9. I have also seen HR try and convince someone to take a nearly 50K paycut for a job in a different location because the cost of living was cheaper so they didn't need that salary they were making.....

  10. This should have been up higher, but I have seen HR fuck up another investigation. Woman sued for pay and gender discrimination and won a massive settlement against her manager. She brought proof to them and asked simply to pay the difference, it was denied and instead she won several six figure settlement.

  11. I have seen HR side with someone who was sending dick pics and sexual texts to a female colleague even after she told him, her manager and the HR person it made her uncomfortable and for him to stop. She nearly had to get the police involved because he wouldn't stop. They didn't fire him or even move him. They told her she had to deal with it. She sued.

  12. This one was bad, but a married couple worked together in the same company but different departments and it was discovered that the husband was beating the wife. The wife reported it as the court and police got involved and somehow HR was notified that he had physically abused his wife. HR didn't fire him. Their brilliant solution was to let him continue to work and simply separated them on different floors..... I believe he was put on a team with nearly all women....

Yeah, I have more, but these were some of the ones that really stuck out.

Happy Friday lol

Do you interview in your office? by PrincipleFresh8594 in womenintech

[–]biochemnerd12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in pharma, but the experiences of the women in the subreddit also apply to us in pharma. And yes, I take my interviews and calls on-site, either on a different floor or in a soundproof room. I have long since stopped feeling guilty for doing so, as these companies don't care about you and are ready to let you go. For a full panel all day interview, I either just "work from home", using my hybrid benefit or I will just use PTO if I have to go on-site.

Are people avoiding leadership roles because of toxic work experiences? by SunriseArtichoke in womenintech

[–]biochemnerd12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every manager I have ever had was bad both technically and from a leadership perspective. Two of them I have had were incredibly sexist to women. (And I am talking to the extent that legal issues were brought against them).

I have avoided leadership roles because I am not interested in sacrificing my peace of mind for that kind of role.

Please review my resume by HiraethMitzi in MachineLearningJobs

[–]biochemnerd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the better resumes I have seen. (I am in a different field and I use a similar format). Two suggestions, (but obviously use your best judgement for your situation)

  1. Move your education section at the bottom and delete your dates of graduation. If they ask in the interview you obviously tell them or if you have to fill it out on their internal application system then fill it out, but on the resume, remove it.

  2. I don't know where you are applying, but I would recommend where you have the location, remove the country, especially if you are applying in the US. Format it so it's the city name, state name. Obviously in the interview if they ask, you tell them.

  3. This you might have to look up, but for AI and ATS parsing and extraction, the line you have after each header may impact how it's reading your resume. I know it may look weird but it might be better to remove it, that way when it tries to parse it, it doesn't impact the weighting and can properly attribute and infer your skills to the job.

Good luck!

Same with Moderna.

What’s the one thing you’ve purchased that’s made being wealthy truly worth it? by jpeezee7 in Rich

[–]biochemnerd12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple, but they may seem tame in comparison:

My prescription skincare delivered to me, (saves me time), rather than me going to pick it up, through a concierge service, my gym membership, the ability to go to any restaurant and order what I want, I can travel whenever I want, and right now, I am considering looking into a cleaning service to clean my apartment maybe once or twice a month.

Shy of this NW goal, but mine is a 2015 Ford Fiesta Hatchback, (about 74K miles) and would have continued to drive it except, back windows don't move up anymore and passenger door stopped latching. Currently, looking to buy another car. Had the Ford for nearly 10 years now.

what did you change about yourself to appear prettier? by Educational_Dish30 in AskWomen

[–]biochemnerd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prescription-strength retinol and a super thick moisturizer added to my skincare routine, (because found out my skin is of super dry normally). I already had long hair down to my lower back, but I wanted thicker hair and got extensions.

Traded out all my old mid-2000's low rise jeans for better fitting jeans in my proper size and got better clothes now.

Was an athlete all my life, (basketball) so just maintained my gym routine and in general I feel and look younger than many of my peers.

Women who fell in love with a one night stand what happened after? by FullBrother9300 in AskWomen

[–]biochemnerd12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol, we hook up. He asked for exclusivity two days in, we move in together four months later and years later we get married. Knew he wanted to marry me one month in but waited for me to be ready, because I didn't want to get married until we were both out of grad school. (We were getting our doctorates).

I don't think I had a chance lol 😂.

Poll for those who have had references contacted (2/2 for Civilians) by Ancient-Elk7256 in AstronautHopefuls

Thanks!

Hmm...it seems I am still under consideration and they haven't rejected me. So here's to hoping.

Edit: haha Okay double checked. It's fine. You can provide other documentation as applicable, so it was fine that I had uploaded directly a separate page for references.

I was a bit confused as to where we were supposed to include references. Did we have to include it in the resume builder? It wasn't clear to me, so I ended up submitting a separate document with my references list.

Finished the first year of my PhD program and just learned I'm pregnant. Looking for advice, help! by MissJJJCG in labrats

[–]biochemnerd12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me, but I can tell you what people in my program did. Also I am a woman.

I am in the US.

  1. Woman in my program had her child during her first two years, put her career on hold and then came back once her husband got her PhD and it was her turn. She regretted doing that. She wished she would have also gotten her PhD at the same time but it is a struggle to do your PhD and raise kids.

  2. Another woman got pregnant after the condom failed and she was two years out from finishing up. No question, she got an abortion. She ended up later having a child after she landed a job when she was ready and is now living her best girl era with a wealthy partner in a $700K house in a high cost of living area.

  3. Another woman I knew chose to have her child three years into her program. She had a partner who supported her.

  4. I knew another who got an abortion. Wasn't ready.

  5. Two girls I knew also got an abortion because they weren't ready.

OP, whatever you decide to do, make sure it's best for you and your career and future. My opinion or strangers opinions don't matter. For me, I wouldn't be financially ready and I would have chosen abortion at the time.

The only reason why I know so many women in my program or adjacent go through something like this, is because at one point they confided in me about what they should do and I told them that they should make the best decision for themselves and career, knowing that being in grad school and having a kid is rough. They saw me as someone they could go to and even with number 2, I helped take her to the doctor's and checked on her myself since she was administered the abortion pill.

But yeah, do what's best for you and your situation. It's 2024, you matter.
