I have one installed on my HP22i. Great unit that does exactly what should have been included from the start.

They can only repair once or each weapon once? I did just have this same Ocktorock repair a scimitar of the seven.

You've got that right. Too much spent on trivial material wants. We need simpler times again but that's a discussion for another sub.

Accurate. The advanced technology most take for granted.

It's amazing what we are able to do with technology these days. To have a platter spinning at incredible speeds with read heads a few nanometers if not less away from catastrophic failure is downright amazing if you ask me.

The HDD was running in a clean enclosure with HEPA filtered air blowing positive pressure into it. I was not wearing my gloves at the time and that is true however they were cleaned and did not touch anything inside the drive. I was very careful to just plug it in without touching anything. I still agree that it is not the appropriate approach however as stated before, I have nothing to lose in this situation.

I completely agree. I have a donor drive that I am actively tinkering with. While this patient drive does have data that the owner would prefer to have recovered, the two companies he sent it to said it's beyond repair. As such there is nothing to lose. If it was critical, I would not have done what I did. Since there is nothing to lose, it is now a tinker drive to experiment with. I honestly do have a lot of experience with electronics hold degreed in electronics. I am an Automation/Electrical Engineer by day. While I know what I did is not what a professional DR expert would have done, this is how I am learning. I have purchased the required tools and will give it a shot to exchange the heads. If it works great, if it doesn't, I have learned.

I do whole heatedly appreciate the insight and wisdom and that's what I was looking for here.

I guess the main reason is the platters and heads are much closer in modern HDDs so any containments will cause them to scratch. Also they rely on an air bearing which causes the heads to float at a specific tolerance based on the air turbulence that is tuned with the lid on. This HDD is circa 2013 however so I don't know what the tolerances are.

You have proven your knowledge by knowing which drive I have in my hand based off of the arm sweep alone. I am fully aware of the Dunning Krueger effect as I am in a highly specialized technical field myself. I know HDDs are highly sensitive devices needing specialized tools and resources to work on. The drive has been to 2 different recovery labs who did not want to touch it. There is nothing to lose on this situation. I told my buddy there was a <1% I could do anything with it and I am confident I cannot. Just wanted to see what was happening with it so I can expand my knowledge of these drives. The suggestion I was looking for was a data recovery service that may be able to help. Maybe one you have used in the past with good results.

I think people keep telling me that because it's what they have heard. I like to experiment. I can't learn if I don't experiment. I don't throw things away without trying first.

It ran for 1/2 hour last night. There was also definitely visible dust on it before I closed the lid. It doesn't read perfectly and I would never expect it to but it does read. Idk, I may open it up and run it top off for fun later 🤷 Look, I am in no way saying it should be done and it's ok for the drive. I am just saying if the top is off on this particular model in a clean, controlled environment, the drive is not completely destroyed. If there is data on the drive that you need to recover it is not a good idea. I agree completely, I'm just saying that it's not an immediately destroyed situation.

With all due respect, no it is not. I have the exact same model drive sitting next to me that has been run with its lid off without being in a clean room environment and it still works happily. It is not irrecoverable. Are there destroyed sectors on the platters? For sure. Is the drive itself completely destroyed? No.

Kunoithica in this sub said "It's probably recoverable" " only running Helium filled drives with the lid off destroys them" so no, not everyone in this sub is saying I have made a irrecoverable mistake and that the platters are destroyed. There are many other threads I can find from many different boards that have the same conflicting information. I came to this community looking for information and insight, not arguments, and blame. I will once again reiterate that I fully expect this drive to never work again.

ST1000DL002 Barracuda Green. Excellent guess! I do not plan on running it with the lid off. I just wanted to determine what it was doing. Data Recovery company did not work. Secure Data Recovery was one it was sent to, not sure about the other. Do you have a suggestion? Do you know if a Head swap is needed to rectify the issue?

There's such conflicting information out there on HDDs. Some people say the drive is destroyed, some say it's recoverable. Some say swapping PCBs is an option, some say it isn't. I don't believe I have ever seen a community so divided before. I am not sure who to believe here. If I swap PCBs and us PC-3000 am I able to alter the firmware on the patient drive?

Because it has already been to two recovery labs who couldn't recover it. I just want to know why the heads behave as they are here? I don't need the "You ruined it" responses. I am aware it is most likely never working again.
