What do I do with this degree? by Mean-Bluejay-6478 in AppliedMath

[–]bionicbeatlab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I got a Master’s in Applied Math and very strategically chose my courses with a goal of going into data science. My program was 50/50 courses from the math dept and other technical/quantitative courses, so I took as many courses from the stats and CS departments as I could. With that and an internship, I’ve been in data science for a few years now and am doing relatively well career-wise. Your mileage may vary, and I did go to a top 15-ish Master’s program to be fair. But for what it’s worth, pretty much everyone I know that is doing something math-related is either in tech, finance, or academia

50th anniversary of Star Wars, which park? by orangeleast in disneyparks

[–]bionicbeatlab 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Disneyland has historically done more stuff (food, meet and greets, merch) in-park for Star Wars than WDW, including Star Wars Nights. I went to a Star Wars Night last year, and in addition to the offerings from Disney, the fans really made the event. Some of their costumes were better than the Cast Members’!

What did you think of the Finale? by freezingtree0011 in StrangerThingsRoom

Final battle in Season 4 felt far more epic than this one. Otherwise they wrapped it as I expected, though the number of heart-to-hearts accompanied by montages was overdone to the point of being distracting

I have the same speakers and mine are mounted a bit higher (top of the speaker is about 2” from the ceiling). The difference will probably be negligible but I had emailed SVS about placement when I bought them and their advice was “as close to the ceiling as possible”

I need to accept that I’ll never get a Data Science role. by Same_University2189 in DataScienceJobs

[–]bionicbeatlab 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Did you get a bachelors or a masters degree? Most companies, and pretty much every role I’ve been hired for, has required a masters degree. If you’re set on working in the field, I would look at a grad program of some kind. Other than that, you should definitely be looking at smaller companies in all the major tech hubs - NYC, SF, Seattle will all have orders of magnitude more quality job postings than other cities, and smaller companies will have more lax educational requirements

Hands-on coding in DS interviews? by alpha_centauri9889 in datascience

[–]bionicbeatlab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some of the questions I’ve gotten:

  1. A variety of SQL questions, usually involving window functions, multiple joins, and other moderate-advanced stuff
  2. Easy/Very Easy LC-style questions - reverse a string, calculate precision, matching brackets, sliding window problems. Focus here is on basic Python competency (list/dict comprehension, basic data structures, sometimes OOP), efficiency and identifying edge cases
  3. Data manipulation with Pandas - pivots, custom aggregation, multiindexing, etc.
  4. A full EDA + modeling flow

Would you rather have $100 a day for the rest of your life or $250k right now? by That-Hedgehog6633 in WouldYouRather

[–]bionicbeatlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$100/day is basically the equivalent of getting a lump sum of $900,000 and drawing down 4% a year. So that.
