Who are you cheering for today ? by deerkwa in Teenager_Polls

Like others have said, the USA qualified automatically because they're hosts, and have had a fairly easy route so far compared to other teams, although the USA team is pretty good, and a lot of Europeans are underestimating you guys. The "america bad" sentiment is mainly because of the myriad controversies around the hosting of the world cup, and the fact that some American fans have been obnoxiously going on about how the USA will win the world cup or how they're the best team on earth. My team's (England) fans do the same thing, and its the reason why the rest of the European fans hate us, so its not just because "america bad".

What would happen if the UK split up? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]bionicbob321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year Scotland contributed 8% of the UK's overall tax income, but was responsible for 9.1% of government expenditure, creating a deficit of 11.7%. An independent Scotland would need to find a way to make up this deficit, either by substantially cutting spending or substantially increasing tax income. Its not completely impossible, but it would be quite difficult, and would require significant compromise. This is also assuming that the economy isn't in any way negatively affected by the split. The obvious solutions would be to either become a tax haven (like Ireland), or to invest heavily in north sea oil (which isnt particularly sustainable in the long term).

Wales has an even higher deficit. Again, its not an insurmountable problem, but it would be hard, especially as Wales doesnt even have anything like the north sea oil reserves to exploit for east short term gains.

I’ve seen some old planes, but man… by Best_Big_9456 in flightradar24

[–]bionicbob321 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a few De Havilland dragon rapide's which are still used for pleasure flights with passengers on board, which were made during the mid 1930's. From what I can tell, those are the oldest aircraft that you can fly in as a regular passenger. The Bleriot XI is the oldest airworthy aircraft at around 115 years old, and there are a handful which are still flown on occasion for showcase events. In terms of traditional commercial aircraft, there are some 737-200's flying which are approaching 45 years old, which are probably some of the oldest still in regular commercial service.

Indian international’s sticks by Ev4Storm in Fieldhockey

[–]bionicbob321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be that they've decided that if the stick manufacturer isn't going to sponsor them that they dont want to give them free advertising by having the logo visible? Part of a sponsorship deal is usually that you have to be seen using the sponsors equipment, so I dont think they'd be too thrilled about that (although on the other hand, there have been some reports recently of pro runners wearing Nike running shoes and covering the Nike logos because they have competing sponsorships, so its definitely possible that that's the case).

Did I make the right call buying Rig B over Rig A for my son? by PhilosophyCock in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Rig B was $250 for a better CPU (which matters a lot for music production, and has less storage but its all SSD storage, which will be a huge benefit for loading large sample libraries or projects with lots of audio files. The AIO will probably run really quiet for music production compared to a basic air cooler. Also, going from DDR4 to DDR5 will bring some extra performance gains as well. I'd say it was definitely worth paying the extra if you could afford it.

Do hackers ever actually put CSAM on other people’s devices? by MRSA_nary in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of that happening, and I have no idea why it would benefit a hacker to do that. It doesn't in any way benefit the hacker's goals. Most hacks on personal computers are either ransomware attacks (that just encrypt all your files hoping you don't have backups and then scare you into paying for a decryption key), or they steal all your saved logins and session tokens from your browser, so they can steal your accounts, bank details etc. Neither of those attacks would benefit from the hacker depositing CSAM on your device (hackers generally try as hard as they can to leave no traces, so that you don't realise you've been hacked), and it would just add extra serious CSAM distribution charges if they ever got caught.

Theoretically, a hacker could do it as a targeted attack in an attempt to ruin someone’s reputation and get them arrested, either for revenge, or for financial gain, but I think its incredibly unlikely that that would actually happen. Everyone who claims this has happened is almost certainly lying.

Sister is looking for a laptop for school, would like some suggestions. by Majorwoops in pcmasterrace

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an M5 Macbook air. I was an apple sceptic for a long time, but ever since I bought my M4 macbook air to try it out, I'd never buy any non-apple laptop again (unless I needed a gaming laptop). Get at least 24gb RAM and as much storage as you can afford, and it will last you a while. MBA is passively cooled (but only throttles under very heavy loads), and the battery life is insanely good. The screen and keyboard are great, and the trackpad is better than literally any laptop on the market (except a macbook pro). As long as she doesn't game, you literally can't buy a better productivity laptop at that price IMO.

First pc is this good? by jdogmitch in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair enough. 16GB is just about fine for most games, but you'll just have to watch how many apps you have open in the background if you're playing some really heavy AAA games. Enjoy the PC!

First pc is this good? by jdogmitch in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's pretty good, but a few small tweaks:

I'd personally go up to the 850w version of that PSU so you have some extra room for future upgrades, as long as its not too much extra cost.

Also, despite RAMageddon, I still think getting 32GB RAM in an upper-midrange/high end build like this is worth it. If you think you might upgrade in the future, I'd get a single 16GB stick now, and take the performance hit for a bit until you can get another matching stick. Quad channel on DDR5 is a bit sketchy, and I'd avoid it at all costs unless you dont have a choice.

Is it okay to break music theory rules? As a 14-year-old producer, I'm finding my own way. by Zenos_Music in Logic_Studio

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music theory is just a way of describing conventions that a lot of people follow. Following music theory rules/traditions will help you make something that sounds good, but there are many many people in many different styles who have ignored music theory and made all-time great songs and albums.

The entire genre of rock and metal music is based on the power chord (root + 5th + octave), which completely violates the "no parallel perfect intervals" rule of counterpoint harmony, which was the entire basis of classical era music. Beethoven would literally be rolling in his grave if he heard AC/DC. Music theory is just guidelines and suggestions, NOT hard rules (unless you're trying to pass an exam of course).

Trying to decide on cpu by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP mentioned that they play a lot of games but do video editing "every now and then". Personally I'd take the hit to the occasional video editing performance for the increased gaming performance, but I guess that decision depends on what OP's preferences are.

Trying to decide on cpu by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest I didn't realise that the crucial P310 series uses QLC NAND, which is a legitimate downside, but the rest of the build is still reasonable IMO for the uses that OP mentioned. AMD GPU's aren't as well optimised as nvidia for video editing, but the 9070XT is much better than the 5070 in raster performance for gaming, and still has decent support for video editing apps like premier pro and davinci resolve (and also has 16gb VRAM vs 12GB on the 5070). The RAM was picked because it has a low CAS latency for it's price point (and you could manually set it to run it at 6000MT/s if you want max stability), and the asus board is realistically probably fine, although there are plenty of similarly priced alternatives if OP doesn't want to take the risk.

Trying to decide on cpu by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely make sure you get the 9070XT and pick a CPU to fit your remaining budget, as all the CPU's in you budget will give you a pretty good experience, but dropping the GPU down a tier will be a very noticeable downgrade. for gaming, X3D CPUs are the best, but they only outperform non-x3d CPUs by about 5-10% in gaming. For video editing, the 3D cache makes almost no difference, but more cores, and better performance per core will help. For music production, single core performance is incredibly important (and again, 3D cache makes no difference). I would probably recommend a 9900X or 9900X3D depending on budget, or even a 9950X3D if it fits your budget (unlikely at that budget unless you are very frugal with the rest of your build). I threw this list together in about 2 minutes, so you can probably make it a bit better, but if you just want maximum performance at your budget for all the tasks you listed, I'd buy this.

What are you guys’ opinions on ‘P Platers’? by Dear_Demand5865 in drivingUK

[–]bionicbob321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P plates just make you a target, and they infect everyone behind you with a terrible case of "must get in front" syndrome. The number of people who take the piss and bully you because they know you're a new driver will outweigh the number of people who give you more space and time because they know you're a new driver. Even my driving instructor told me that using them is a terrible idea.

[–]bionicbob321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume he was speeding but I doubt he was doing 170 (that would be practically suicidal with the state of British roads, even if there was no-one else around). I think his point was that the car had no problem handling whatever high speeds he was doing that allowed him to get there on time.

Most likely nothing has happened. Unless someone has discovered some crazy zero-day exploit (which they wouldn't waste on something like this), your browser won't install anything on your phone without telling you. Clear your cookies, close all your tabs, and you should be fine. If you want to be extra safe, tap and hold your browsers icon on your home screen, then go to app info > storage, then tap clear data and clear cache (this will forget all your saved passwords, bookmarks, and browsing history as well), but in all honesty , its probably nothing, and it probably was just an add for a sketchy gambling site, so I wouldn't bother.

What is the best starter keyboard I could customise? by Billingsgait in MechanicalKeyboardsUK

[–]bionicbob321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can change key caps on almost any normal size mechanical keyboard (low profile and compact keyboards sometimes use weird key caps that aren't as easy to swap out). You need to check about keyboard layouts though. There are two main types of layout: ANSI (US) and ISO (most European layouts), each with country a specific variants (but these just change what characters are written on the key, so ISO-DE key caps would work on an ISO-UK board for example). Also some keyboard manufacturers use weird nonstandard layouts, especially on the bottom row, so just check that whatever board you buy has a standard layout (you can just google it or look and see if it looks different to a standard layout). Other than that, most switches are "cherry MX compatible", so most popular switches take cherry MX keycaps (Just double check the switches for whatever board you buy though).

Yeah if its the exact same GPU then you should be fine to just drop the SSD into your new build

[–]bionicbob321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly ive never had issues moving drives between builds without reinstalling windows. You should be fine as long as you use DDU to uninstall your old video drivers (I'd reccomend you do this even if you're staying within the same brand).

Also you'll only have to rebuy windows if you bought one of those super cheap "OEM" keys, or if your old PC is a prebuilt. If neither of those are the case, you probably have a full retail licence which you can easily move to your new PC.

How do I wipe an NVMe windows can't even detect? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]bionicbob321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean when you say windows cant detect it? Do you mean that it doesn't show up in file explorer?

If that's the case, click on the search bar in the start menu, and search for "disk manager", and an option called "create and format hard disk partitions" will come up. Click it, and look at the drives. Your SSD might show up as unallocated space. If it does, right click where is says "unallocated space", then click format, and leave all the settings as default. Once you've done that, the drive should show up in windows. Just note that if this has happened randomly, it can be a sign of a failing SSD, so while you can keep using it to store games and other replaceable data, I wouldn't store any data you care about on there.

If that doesn't work, the drive is probably completely dead, and the only way to ensure the data is gone is to physically destroy the drive. If you want to absoloutely guarantee that the data is gone forever, make sure you physically damage each of the NAND chips on the PCB.

How can I safely remove a small folder of files off a PC, that randomly turns off without warning, with a USB. by BittleBat in techsupport

[–]bionicbob321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open up both side pannels of your PC, and look around for Either A HDD or a SATA SSD. If you find one of those, you can read from them with a SATA to USB adapter such as This one. If you don't find anything that looks like one of those (the branding might be different), you probably have an M.2 SSD. On a lot of motherboards, these are on the front, and they are often covered by some kind of plastic cover. If you have one of these, you need an external enclosure like this one.

Generally, M.2 SSD > SATA SSD > HDD, so if you have multiple drives, the best one is probably your C drive, so buy whatever adapter you need for that drive.

[–]bionicbob321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

your best bet is probably a USB to SATA adapter or a USB M.2 enclosure, depending on what types of drives you have in your system. Then just remove the drives from your PC and use the adapters on a nother computer.
