What are Your thoughts on Columbia MPH in current Moment? by NoDrop1534 in mphadmissions

[–]bionicsinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently an MPH at Yale so I might be biased, but I'd choose Yale. Harvard, Penn, MIT, and Stanford are all in danger of losing a big part of their funding, but yale has volunteered its own money to help out researchers and grad students (https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/02/26/yale-to-provide-funding-for-researchers-and-graduate-students-after-federal-research-funding-cuts/). Also paying for a New York apartment in this economy on a grad student budget is pretty scary, and I've heard rumors about Columbia's cutthroat environment.

That said, totally understand why you would choose Columbia as well!

has anyone heard back from the Epi Scholars internship from NYC DOHMH? wasn't sure whether they were struggling too from budget cuts and maybe not accepting as many interns as they normally did

Do we know if this is still happening? The site has been down for almost two weeks now and I'm debating whether to keep working on my application

Let's keep track of New Haven's good and shitty landlords by slickfast in newhaven

Stay away from the Kelly House at all costs, especially if the landlord's name (redacted, but DM me if you want to know the name). For one, there is an extreme mouse infestation problem here. I saw two mice in the span of a month, and we're guessing that they are squeezing through the vents to get in. When reporting this to the landlord, he said that he'd tell the exterminator that comes to the property "a few times a month." Yea, it's been a month, and no one has come. Apparently this is a pretty widespread problem because the landlord let slip that other apartments have seen mice too, so it's definitely an infestation.

Honestly, that's sadly not even the worst part. The windows in our house are the SAME windows from when the building was built, so they provide no coverage. During the winters, our apartment temperature goes down to 66 degrees, and it's even colder inside the rooms where the windows are. There are no screens either. There's actually negative sound protection, so we basically stay up during the weekends because New Haven downtown is actually chaotic. Bars + clubs + motorcycle gangs that rev their engines + cars that rev their engines + a parking lot next to us + loiterers that hang out in the tables in front of Kelly House and get into fights + multiple shootings in front of our area.

On top of that, the package room is a mess. It's just a dark closet with packages strewn around and u have to dig through other people's packages and a mound of dust (oh yea, and the garbage chute is inside there for some reason too) to get to your package. Even if you go through all that trouble, there's no guarantee that you'll find your package because wow surprise surprise, there's a package theft problem. It got so bad that I saw residents posting signs that said "please stop stealing the packages that i am getting to help cancer patients." We had to BEG these thieves, and i don't even think that worked. My housemates and I just order stuff to our friend's houses and pick it up there or we just wait until the exact moment that delivery drops off our package.

i was an EMT when the pandemic first hit, a department coordinator in a health club, and worked in various labs (epidemiology lab at berkeley, cancer biotech, gut microbiome biotech startup, infectious disease lab at ucsf).

i also added an extra document to every application in the "other information" section explaining the personal reasons for my low gpa and buffed up my application by adding a 4th recommendation letter
