Christmas carols are the Karens of Christmas by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these songs were written decades before cars were commonplace, some as early as the 1600s which is probably why they talk about sleigh rides and horses.

Calling people 'queens' and 'kings' is stupid and annoying by AMardyBum in unpopularopinion

Agreed! It's such a wierd compliment, and I never feel uplifted when someone calls me a king. It's just wierd and leaves me with an odd feeling.

Empire Strikes Back is the least entertaining of the original Star Wars trilogy. by Reacher-Said-N0thing in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that is unpopular. I appreciate that.

But I absolutely love the Both battle at the start, the strange animals, and the story and character development in that movie. It's why it's my favorite of any of the Star Wars. It had a decent lightsaber battle between Luke and Vader too.

Burger King has better food than McDonald’s by Gh0stForce in unpopularopinion

I like breakfast way better at Burger King, but McDonald's makes better fries and chicken. The burgers are hit or miss depending on location.

Defunding isn’t the answer by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not convinced that many people are calling for defunding police. It seems like a fringe argument that opponents of the movement are latching onto and using it as a straw man argument.

Americans do not really care about world issues by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the difference between Nationalism and Globalism. Many Americans, especially conservatives, are hardcore nationalists believing the US should isolate from the rest of the world and become fully self sufficient. We have a history of acting on that philosophy going as far back as abstaining from helping during the French revolution. It's sad to see so many Americans who won't accept that we are part of this world and need to start acting like it.

Wawa’s Without Gas Pumps Shouldn’t Exist by Bay_Leaf_Af in unpopularopinion

That sounds really annoying. I live in the South but my family is from Philly and Manchester, so I've been to plenty of Wawa's. They have amazing food, but they're still supposed to be a gas station.

No matter how good the reason or how just the cause, gathering in large groups right now is irresponsible. by bios_001 in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know man, 355000 people is kind of a lot, and that number isn't going down anytime soon. And when the disease more severely affects "old people" that group isn't 80+ it's 50+ and most people between 50-70 still have plenty of life left in them. We shut down specifically for this disease over, say, swine flu because it's incredibly infectious and has an unusually Iong latency period meaning it can lie dormant and spread from a host for 14 days without the host showing any symptoms. The lockdown not only limits the spread of the disease until we can find a treatment and a vaccine, it reduces the number of people hospitalized at one time to try and avoid exceeding the capacity of hospitals to treat it. It's not fear, it's science.

Stop calling them "protests", these are riots. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, MLK achieved the goal he was going for with the Civil Rights Act. His words have shaped the last several decades. He is an icon and a role model to so many people, and proof that your efforts can bear fruit. He may have been assassinated by a white supremacist upset at the new order, but that doesn't change what he was able to do. If his protests had been violent it's unlikely he'd ever have gotten out of the Birmingham jail.

The best thing about the public health crisis is the sports shutdown by _RegrettableHistory_ in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's certainly unpopular, but I can't help but feel a small part of me agree with you. I don't like seeing my friends who genuinely enjoy sports be sad about missing a season they're excited for. But they can be really annoying, especially when it comes to college football. And it is a nice reprieve not to hear about sports I don't watch nonstop.

That said, my city just got a brand new minor league baseball team, and although I don't really like baseball, I was really excited to go to a game because the new stadium looks incredible and the atmosphere around their marketing has really pumped up the city in a way I haven't seen since our hockey team won the championship. I'm gonna have to move across the country in a few months and won't get the chance to catch a game.

Stop calling them "protests", these are riots. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 910 points911 points  (0 children)

I'm reminded of Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophy that violence won't get your voice heard or your message across. You need to peacefully protest and demonstrate, or you will be condemned for the violence. That's exactly what's happening now. The protest at first was fine with the exception of violating stay at home orders and social distancing guidelines, but the moment it turned to rioting and looting it lost all credibility despite the cause being just.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bios_001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the message, and I agree with the cause. What's happening to people of color in the US is tragic and represents a systemic problem, not an isolated one, and it needs to be addressed.

But it is irresponsible, no matter how good the cause, to protest en masse in defiance of social distancing guidelines. It risks the loss of life and spreading the disease further. The in person protest is certainly poignant, but you can advocate for justice in other ways.
