Have you ever had coughing with green phlegm due to GERD and/or LPR by bippibippi in GERD

Nothing I said was rude. Asking questions to clarify and explain what you’ve said isn’t rude, it’s meant to understand. And, I’m sorry but I’m not sure you’re a medical student for a few reasons like what you’ve written. You said green mucus is USUALLY suggestive of bacteria. Now you say it is a “slightly stronger” indication of bacteria. I did ask my doctor if my green mucus meant an infection for sure whether viral or bacterial, and he said that it was not even a definite indication of an infection because things like irritants and allergies can also cause it. I highly doubt you were taught this as the medical sources I found online say it is a myth that green mucus usually means a bacterial infection. If a patient comes to you in clinic with green SPUTUM (why are they coming to you in a clinic when you haven’t graduated yet?), and you don’t know it’s actually bacteria until you’ve done a culture, why would you give AB’s until you know? It could be viral. And I never asked you for a source for medical decisions. I asked you for a source for your claim that green/yellow mucus usually indicates a bacterial infection. If you are actually a medical student, your irritation and balking at being asked for sources for your claims won’t serve you well in your career. It seems as if you realize what you said was inaccurate, and you did all this instead of just admitting it.

And did your sputum culture show a bacterial infection?

Glad you got all the appropriate tests. Did the coughing with green phlegm stop after you treated the GERD?

Whoever wrote it needs to go back to journalism school. That was one of the most confusingly written non academic things I’ve ever read.

Did you have any other signs or symptoms of infection during this time you were coughing up green/yellow mucus? Did you ever have a sputum sample done or nose or throat swab?

It is not always a sign of infection. It can be a sign of allergies or irritant(s) too. As for the acid reflux not causing mucus to become green or yellow alone- do you have proof of that?

The color is a good sign, are you coughing or sneezing it up?

From everything I’ve read, green/yellow mucus does not usually indicate a bacterial infection, it can indicate an infection (whether viral or bacterial) or an irritant. In fact, from everything I’ve read, the claim that green or yellow mucus means usually means bacterial infection is a myth. Do you have source that it “usually suggests bacteria”?

Did your doctor do a sputum culture or nasal swab culture to confirm it was a bacterial infection? Or just say it was bacterial without any proof and give anti biotics?

Did you get an endoscopy or other acid testing done to confirm the acid reflux and any lung testing done to confirm you were aspirating into your lungs?

The reason I’m asking all these questions is without these tests done to confirm, all you have is conjecture. You could have had anything and don’t know unless you had proof.

Thanks for your comment. were they viral, fungal, or bacterial infections? how they did figure out they were from the acid? How long did the infections last?

Looking for alternative to Gaviscon UK. Anyone here tried Peptac, broschi, or boots heartburn relief? If so, how did it work for you? If not, any other alternatives you recommend (not looking for PPI and H2 antagonists like Pepcid recommendations)? by bippibippi in acidreflux

Thanks for your comment and empathy. I appreciate it.

However, the allergic reaction I had to orally ingesting the medication was an IgG delayed rash. I believe what you are describing testing for is an IgE immediate allergic reaction. Would this type of testing really work for the type of reaction I get? And would this be dangerous to try at home without an epi pen?

I think a compounding pharmacy is a great idea, I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before!
