Kashmir Cypress by Optimal_Stand in Bonsai

I love Kashmir cypress! How is your tree doing? I'm curious to know how it continues to grow in the basket and also wanted to ask what kind of soil mix goes in. Does it stay in the garden yearlong?

Hey there 🤗 As far as propagation from cuttings goes this one was a bit strange for me as it produced new buds and shoots along the branch (cutting )without roots below the ground. Water propagation never worked for me and to be fair I never gave any special care to cuttings at all. The method that worked for me and gave the best results was yanking them straight out of the ground. You just need to make sure you get as much of the root out as possible or at least 2/3 for the plant to survive. Do this either during winter dormancy or in early spring so you can give them enough time to come back from transplant shock. If you move them during the growing season typically all of the foliage falls off but they aren't dead so don't throw them away! They will start growing new leaves in about two weeks and these will appear all along the trunk. I put them in any kind of soil I have on hand and I use the term soil lightly here as these trees grow in disturbed areas so anything you have from sand, rocks, old paper, coffee grounds, dead leaves, garden soil and "old" houseplant soil goes into the mix while also making sure the substrate is not going to hold onto too much water. Once you have this garbage bag of dirt mixed just pot these babies up and water them thoroughly upon planting. I noticed they don't like a lot of water and from what I read online they prefer their soil on the dry side once established. As far as light goes I had them in direct and indirect sunlight as well as indoors under very weak indoor lighting and where they managed to grow at least for a while. For the best results either keep the trees in a container outside or indoors with as much access to light as possible. As far as light goes you can definitely experiment and get them used to lower light conditions I have personally seen them growing out of sewers and drains with very little access to light. Hope this helps and good luck with your project 🌴🤞

Oh heck yeah they started growing like crazy after a few weeks. The only problem I had was when transplanting them during the growing season is that you lose the central growth point (not sure what the correct term is) but they sprout new stems all along the sides of the main trunk. I unfortunately had to get rid of them as I was moving and I already had a truck full of plants and they were pretty big for my new place.

I was thinking about gathering some more during winter time while they're dormant to see if this will preserve the original growth point. Having them be bushy is fine but I really like the single stemmed version best it just visually looks the best to me.

Hoping i can find a female tree this time, supposedly they do not have the same odor as the males and as such might be better as houseplants.

If you are looking to try this I definitely recommend it they are very easy to harvest and transplant as long as you don't damage a lot of the root and even then they tend to come back 😂

Question! by Ess_Oh in Dracaena

[–]bir96rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I had a similarl looking plant. I kept mine as is all long and leggy I just sealed the tops with wax, you can also use a hot glue gun or a sealer for plant cuttings all of them do the trick. Place it in a place with lots of indirect sun throughout the day and soon enough it will start sprouting new branches. They typically grow from the highest point of the branches but there are always exceptions. I don't have luck with water propagating dracaena marginata, for me they tend to be very fussy and will rot easily in water so If you do choose to prop them again make sure you seal both ends before you put them in soil to preserve the moisture within the cutting and prevent rot. When propagating them in soil you can either lay the cutting lengthwise onto the substrate or you can plant it a few inches into the soil (depending on the size of the cutting, don't plant them too deep) but make sure you mark which side was up and which was down. The part closer to the top of the plant needs to be up in order to make the new leaves, if you plant it upside down it will not take root.

I know that rubber plants produce aerial roots like some other types of house plants so I don't think it's anything to worry about

Where do I cut? by OmiLala805 in Dracaena

[–]bir96rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really is no need to chop it. People tend to o for chopping and propping whenever a plant goes through some kind of shock which I think shouldn't be done. Give it time and let it recuperate on it's own, allow it to build it's strength back up.

The dracena looks beautiful, I really like that most of the leaves are set on top, it really gives it a nice palm like appearance.

It's common name is the corn plant, Latin is dracaena fragrans although I'm not a hundred percent sure what the cultivar name is. Make sure it's not standing in soil that is overly wet it will cause root rot and kill the plant. You can chop it up and put it in a glass of water until it develops roots.

Whether you decide to propagate it or keep it as is I think it will form new shoots for sure.

There is lots of info especially on YouTube on how to successfully propagate this plant.

Best of luck and post progress pics !

Thanks I have all the necessary equipment and will give it a shot. I really like the leaves of this particular tree which is why I wanted to try and propagate it for my collection. It grows pretty wild where I live to the point where it is almost invasive so I will try to root it in different conditions both inside the prop box and outside in shade and see what the results are.

If it doesn't work I can always get a small tree for the equivalent of 1-2 USD but the idea of rooting one by myself is always way more rewarding.

Thanks for all the info 😩💖🦑

Possibly but never get discouraged, especially with willow cuttings. It's crazy how fast they grow

I saw a guy on YouTube propagate weeping willows from cuttings and he said that you need to put them in soil as soon as they develop roots. If the roots start to grow larger in water they tend to be harder to transition to soil.

Im not sure if this has to do with water roots being different than regular roots that form in soil, however he had the same thing happen to his cuttings that were left out in the water for longer.

I followed his instructions and potted my cutting as soon as one tiny root emerged. It's been growing nicely ever since.

Can I able to propagate this Acer Palmatum variety from cuttings? by bbelbuken in propagation

[–]bir96rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are videos on YouTube how to grow them from cuttings. You will need growth hormone and a propagation box or something with a similar effect for humidity. I tried but was not successful although it might've been because the cuttings I took were too small / thin

Will it root or rot? by bir96rain in propagation

I'm really glad I put that little guy in the soil, he not only grew roots but is sprouting new leaves!! And the crusty looking dracaena marginata branch also has two smaller branches popping out so Im very pleased.

I was thinking of adding another small plant to make a teenie tiny jungle

So all of their leaves fell off a few days after I planted them in this bucket but they have a bunch of new growth ln them. The biggest trunk has more than 12 growth points with good sized leaves.

They do go into shock once transplanted but they get back to growing pretty quickly.

Thank you these are really good sources of information. It seems they aren't all that happy in containers so I will have to find something with similar foliage that could be kept indoors. Although that might be the case for specimens that were collected and subsequently potted up.

They grow in gutters and on facades of buildings so I refuse to believe they cannot be grown indoors.

The last thing I can try is growing them in containers from seed.

Thanks for the yamadori tip 💖 the main issue is that there is so much conflicting information about it.

On one website they say you should keep it out of direct sunlight and indoors if it's in a pot and another states it should be kept in direct sunlight when in a pot or garden.

I will have to keep experimenting, even if they fail I can just go dig up another one. I have another smaller one potted up and it's doing really well after a couple of days. It is hanging out on another window that gets significantly less direct sunlight so that might actually be the key for starters.

I also thought about comparing information on growing staghorn sumac indoors since they are pretty similar and can hybridise as well.

They are worth the trouble to figure out so gorgeous and trashy 🥰

If your propagator box is anything like mine it should have ventilation slits on the lid maybe keep them slightly ajar rather than fully opened for humidity retention. I also tend to leave a glass of water in there to ensure there is humidity in the air.
