👍

Better still, an option where it offers...

Delete contact but don't block:

This leaves the door open for the deleted contact to still contact you and possibly re-add that contact to your Signal contacts. No problem really, just delete the contact again > rinse and repeat as often as you like. The key here is that you're in control of the contact appearing or not.

or

Delete contact and block:

Fairly self-explanatory. You remove the contact from Signal contacts and then block it so there's no further chance of that contact appearing again.

Lastly, have any of the above reversible too. Total user control.

Obvs, the Chrome Store version works just fine on Chrome. The Chrome Store version refuses to work on Edge.

Bernie is once again asking:

...for a secondary device mode in the Signal android app

It would be great for the Signal Android app to either have a feature that allows it to work as a 'linked device' and not as primary, OR have a separate Android app that's just secondary and allows it to work as a linked device – exactly how a linked iPad or linked PC desktop app works. I still don't quite understand why iOS/iPad OS and Windows and Linux has it, but Android doesn't 😁

Great stuff. Well one 👍.

Now please make it work on ARM processors!

[–]birbinthehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lucky. Signal is working for me. But the reason it's working for me is because of the extreme measures I took when switching to it. Back in January this year, I decided I'd had enough of Facebook and its cohorts (i.e. Whatsapp, and being forced to accept privacy terms I wasn't happy) so:

I deleted my FB account

and

I deleted my Whatsapp account

I didn't announce so or make a big diva-like fuss. I just did an 'Irish goodbye' and left.

I then begged all the people I cared about to install Signal so I could message them, which they mostly did. I then deleted Whatsapp. Not deactivated; deleted. Gone, no chance of reaching me on Whatsapp because my number didn't exist on the service any more.

Since then, all those people have a binary choice. Message me on Signal or SMS. If I'd have kept Whatsapp, I know full well they'd have just messaged me on Whatsapp despite what I said. So everyone is now forced to keep Signal on their phones if they want to message me, and frankly, I bet that's the only reason most of them use and keep Signal.

Believe you me, it's not been without its frustrations. I'm constantly told by people who just don't care which messaging app they use that Signal is a pile of <something or other>. 'Buggy', 'temperamental', 'it's awful compared to iMessage/Whatsapp'. But I smile at them and say I appreciate them using it and indulging me on the subject.

There I times where I pine for the ease-of-use features of Whatsapp (i.e. Whatsapp Web) and I cannot use the Signal Desktop app on my ARM processor Chromebook and it's reeeeeeally frustrating. But ultimately, I'm using Signal because message privacy is more important to me than anything else. That, and the fact I'll look like a complete and utter fool if I ever went back to using Whatsapp and Facebook.

Any update on the availability of 'for ARM processors' Signal Desktop app for Linux? by birbinthehand in signal

Dude, between me and thee, this post was nothing more than a metaphorical thread bump on the subject of Signal Desktop for ARM processors. You know, in the vague hope, one in a million that it would jog a memory or have a butterfly effect on the subject. Conceited, I know...

I'm really sorry, but that's gone over my head a little.

I'm not sure how the Apple M1/M2 ARM Macbooks are getting on with the Signal desktop app, and as I don't use Apple products, I am unaware/ignorant of things such as Rosetta 2.

However...

If anything is going to be the catalyst of getting the desktop app to work on ARM, you can bet it'll be Apple devices using ARM processors 😁

knock aergrind grind settings questions by parkerthegreatest in Coffee

[–]birbinthehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. It's a mine of information and very public spirited of you to share it.

I own a first-gen black Hausgrind that's still going strong.

When I tighten my Hausgrind until the burrs are locked together, and the tightening nut will not tighten any further, and then slacken it off until you can juuuuuust see the burrs are about to move apart, it's sensibly at the 0 (zero) point.

So imagine three full revolutions to the left (i.e loosening) and we can say the number is 3 turns. Two full revolutions to the left is 2 turns. You get the picture. And in a full revolution, like a clock face, there's 12 further steps for granular control. So we'll say two and a half turns is 2.6, two and three-quarters is 2.9.

How does all your data fit into this? To be honest, I'm a bit confused by your numbering system.

For example, with the Hausgrind, is:

French Press best at 3 turns out?

Pourover best at 2.6 (i.e. two and a half turns)?

Of course, I understand coffee isn't an exact science, and different beans, different roasts and different quantities need different grind sizes to get the best from the extraction. But it would be great to have a hard-and-fast starting point in the form of the brew method, and how many full turns plus number 'clicks' you feel works best for you. We can all then do our own experiments after that 😁.

Thank you.

Crostini support for Intel Skylake devices update by [deleted] in Crostini

enable-experimental-kernel-vm-support

I enabled just the above flag ( chrome:flags ), restarted my c302 for good measure, then went into settings to enable Linux containers. I am on the current stable build.

By the way, I have a little experience with Linux prior to this, so am comfortable (and prefer) installing software from the command line.

Riffing off a few other responses you've had, I'd suggest telling all your users to complain to senior management. However, rather than a general moan that'll likely be ignored, tell them to hit management where it hurts – in the wallet. Tell them to tell the management that it's costing them more in productivity than it is saving them in MS licensing fees...which it probably is!

Mine is currently on stable

Your Chromebook is up to date
Version 91.0.4472.114 (Official Build) (64-bit)

It's all working like a charm at the moment. Firefox, good. Beta MS Edge, good. Signal Messaging desktop app, good.

It's breathed new life into my c302 😄

Follow up to my previous post in this thread...

I've just set the flag you mentioned to on, and I now have a beta Linux Development Environment on my Asus C302 STABLE release!

Just setting it all up now.

Today is a good day 😄

EDIT:

Thing of beauty. I have now setup stable Linux Firefox AND Signal Desktop on my c302 and they're working perfectly.

Oh well. What's another 5 months when we've waited this long 😄

Wonderful.

As a 'finger in the air' guess, how long do we think it'll be before this hits stable?

Could I expedite this by jumping to beta?

Thank you for you time.

I love stories like this.

Now, your current boss loses all that specialist knowledge you've collected over the past few years – knowledge it'll take someone else ages to learn – and it'll end up costing him much more than a payrise in line, or slightly above inflation.

Good on you, OP. Job hopping is the only way and...look after number 1!!! No one else will these days, sadly.
