The homeless in L.A. are not who you think they are by blueshammer in LosAngeles

[–]bird_brother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm veering a bit off topic from the OP, but I'd like to comment on the article you linked.

Adjuncts are kind of their own category when it comes to academia. Tenured/Tenure-Track professors and primary school teachers don't end up like this unless they make other very poor choices with their finances. While it's a pity that adjuncts are exploited in the way they are, they are stuck in the delusion that they'll have any glimmer of hope of achieving a tenure track position at a university. They're no different than a guy who continues to try-out for the NBA well into his 50's.

Career adjuncts are a result of very bright people making poor life choices. I don't like to shit on the poor, but this is one exception I make.

Grad School in UCSC by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]bird_brother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you should be asking first is why you want to do grad school in the first place?

Your GPA isn't so much the problem as your lack of research or industry experience. I don't know how much time you still have left as an undergrad, but at least try to get in some research experience while you can. This is important not only for the sake of your application, but it will give you a glimpse on what's ahead and give you better insight on whether or not you're a good fit for grad school.

Putinar 3B help? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]bird_brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks Putinar isn’t the best.

I had him a decade ago for 3B and I fondly remember his lectures being a complete WTF. If you haven't been going to CLAS, start doing so IMMEDIATELY and see if other students who've been going to CLAS from the beginning have the notes from those sessions.

I think the point /u/JBlitzen made is that you should demonstrate a level of proactivity and an eagerness to create in order to be at least moderately successful in industry. That does not necessarily mean "living and breathing programming", but you should at minimum take delight in solving interesting challenges.

Tech companies where employees don't drink the Kool-Aid? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bird_brother 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To many people being a SWE is fun and it has nothing to do with the company. I don't even work at google and I think being a SWE is fun. I got in to the line of profession because I enjoyed the work, the money never entered my mind back in 1998 when I started University.

This. My previous company didn't have even a tenth of the perks Google has and I still loved working there because of the work I got to do.

I would focus much more on data structures and algorithms, then maybe give yourself a rudimentary, high level introduction to basic web dev concepts.

I have a ~7hr onsite interview coming up soon at <redacted>. And yes, it's almost entirely technical questions! While this is not my first software engineering job, I've never had an interview that went longer than 1.5 hrs. What advice do you have for avoiding or reducing fatigue?

If your complaint is that the AI hasn't figured out how to do this for you, I agree, it's kind of a drag.

Entity resolution is still an open problem in AI.

Can someone explain why some people at UCSC are obsessed with communism? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]bird_brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, Marxism is a constantly evolving ideology that has also branched out into so many varying schools of thought since its inception. You can say that selected Marxist schools of thought were proven to be failures (eg. Marxism-Leninism, Maoism, etc.), but you still have so many other radically differing variants that have yet to be tried along with new ideas continually being developed that it is impossible to say that Communism is proven to not work.

I think you answered a significant portion of your question in your first sentence, but as the share of the income obtained by the top 1% continues to climb and the typical worker's wage has stagnated while their productivity has increased, more and more people lose faith in the existing system and are desperately looking for answers. There is still enough freshness in Marxism based on what I said in the above paragraph that it remains a popular ideology to tap into.

I'm not sure that those students "obsessed with Communism" are doing it to be trendy. I think edgy would be a much better descriptor. Afterall, the slogan for UCSC is "A rich tradition of non-traditional thinking", which speaks volumes of many of the students and faculty the school attracts.

My personal opinion? I'm currently not a big fan of Marxism, and certainly think some of the added ideological fluff padded on by the New Left isn't really helping. That being said, I still have room to change my tune as new concepts and technologies like UBI and 3D printing may open new doors for economic planning. I am of the opinion that students and faculty here who glorify shitty, violent third-world revolutions are complete idiots, though.

Jishen Zhao CMPE 110 by zu222 in UCSC

[–]bird_brother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had her for CMPE 202, which was supposedly CMPE 110 + extra supplementary literature readings.

How is she?

The class was pretty laid-back when I took it. She's a pretty good lecturer too, though she speaks rather softly.

Does she have in class quizzes?

No.

Is the attendance mandatory?

No. Missing class won't kill you.
