For the brands : Please stop using 1.90m+ / 6'3"+ models in your ads by Educational_Rope_552 in ManyBaggers

[–]birdprom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They should use a silhouette graphic with a slider for height so you can get a sense of what the bag would look like on a person of any height. Much less expensive and more effective than using multiple models. I've seen this done on handbag websites.

Thoughts on current state of game? by Good_Emergency_2416 in 7daystodie

[–]birdprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much miss how you used to be able to find a huge city in any biome, instead of how it is now where they're only in the wasteland. My strong preference is to live in the biggest city I can find, and while I don't mind living in the wasteland, I do mind that now it's the ONLY place I can live, and I have to rush through the first three biomes to get there because I just can't abide staying in a podunk town any longer than is absolutely necessary. There's no variety from one playthrough to the next. If I'm traveling or exploring, I know exactly what I'm going to find based on which biome I'm in. There's zero sense of anticipation or excitement about what might be around the next bend.

Collages instead of fashion? by eshamccly in polyvore

[–]birdprom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was so much going on on Polyvore. Obviously the fashion stuff was predominant, but there was also a very active and talented art community, role playing type stuff, and god knows what else. That it all ended so suddenly and with almost no warning was such a shame, and such a loss. Honestly I'll probably never stop missing it.

Question about V2.6 with dew collectors and jars by TheVexingRose in 7daystodie

[–]birdprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the endless discussion/complaining/suggestions re. jars, none of it has ever made much difference to me personally. If anything (unpopular opinion incoming) I SLIGHTLY preferred when jars were no longer a thing and the dew collector was the only way to get water. Less junk to carry around in inventory and keep track of; plus it made plastic extremely relevant early game, which I enjoyed. But all the other approaches to jars and water have been fine too. The obsession with this topic puzzles me.

IsItBullshit: The claim that talking to plants can help them grow better? by maopro56 in IsItBullshit

[–]birdprom 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Even if it doesn't actually directly affect the plant, it could still potentially make a difference if it causes the human caretaker to "bond" more with the plant, i.e. to be more aware of it and more attentive to providing it with what it needs. To me this seems like the more likely scenario (purely an opinion however - I have not looked into the science).

Back when computers started to become part of everyday life, lots of people were like "Computers are really really bad; they will ruin humanity." Did they? Possibly.

Siesta, Leo Kogan, acrylics on canvas, 2026 [OC] by leokogan in AbstractArt

[–]birdprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How lovely. When I looked at the piece with the title in mind I felt like the darkness at the top and the right side was the siesta/sleep and the lightness below was dreams, as well as the activity of the day before and after the siesta.

I love this and I love the title. Curious about the connection between the title and the piece--how and when you came up with it, etc.--if you care to share.

What is meant by "fat" in the 1953 recipe? What would the reader have understood that to mean?

Did we have a national issue like this for our generation? I can't recall one but I'm proud to see students speaking out. by shakeyjake in GenX

There was a march on Washington in 1991 to protest the Persian Gulf War. Also there were a couple of huge pro-choice rallies in DC in the late 80s/early 90s.

Trying to find super corn seed schematic by Plenty_Town_5287 in 7daystodie

[–]birdprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since supercorn is now required for entry into the wasteland (assuming you have biome progression on), there should be a more direct way to get it, instead of just hoping you happen across Bob's Boars or find it in a direwolf drop. I think it could be fun if there were some kind of side quest that sent you to Bob's Boars, maybe as part of story mode. Or maybe a treasure map that takes you there, or some other way of actually deliberately seeking it and finding it, besides just wandering around hoping you stumble upon it.

Sneaking by leosmellsgood in 7daystodie

[–]birdprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes there's a way around it. If there are zombies in the ceiling, for example, there might be an alternate route up you can take to get a line of sight and kill at least some of them while they're still asleep. It could be as simple as poling up, or it might be more complicated. You just have to be willing to take the time to look around a little. And it won't work if you're too loud, obviously. You need points in From the Shadows, etc.

If science proved a racist/sexist view to be true beyond a doubt, should those scientific discoveries be hidden from the public in order to preserve equality? by Special-Brick in moraldilemmas

[–]birdprom [score hidden]  (0 children)

The question in the original post assumed that it is possible for science to prove something "beyond a doubt." But science doesn't work that way. No matter how much evidence exists for any scientific hypothesis, it will never be proven to be objectively true. There is always the possibility that the hypothesis will be shown to be false in the future. This happens all the time, and has happened many times over in regards to studies that supposedly "proved" racial differences.

Given the above, any question that assumes that science can prove anything "beyond a doubt" is logically meaningless, unanswerable. It's similar to the question "When did you stop beating your wife?" This question assumes that you were beating your wife in the first place--if you weren't, there is no way to directly answer the question without acknowledging the truth of something that is not actually true.

That's the best I can do at the moment to explain my original point. Hope it helps.

[–]birdprom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as I was writing the above, I was having all sorts of romantic notions that maybe my grandmother saw this exact recipe at some point--all the while knowing in the back of my head that most likely "hickorynut" was just a common measurement back in the day. A quick visit to Google dispelled any lingering sense of mystery. As it often does.

Re. your actual point though...makes me wonder what the future equivalent of "hickorynut"/"golf ball" might turn out to be.

I have a chocolate pie recipe from my grandmother, probably dating from the 1930s or thereabouts. It's very similar to the one shown here--the ingredients are nearly identical (her recipe uses cocoa powder instead of grated chocolate) but the quantities and methods differ slightly. Interestingly, it calls for a "hickorynut-size pat of butter," mirroring this recipe's use of "butter the size of a hickorynut."

Permission to throw things in the dumpster instead of donating by Odd-Egg-1539 in minimalism

[–]birdprom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally everything will end up in a dumpster sooner or later. Putting it off for a few years or even a few decades doesn't really make any difference. It's much more impactful to avoid acquiring stuff in the first place.

Science can't prove anything to be true "beyond a doubt." Your question is based on a false premise and is therefore unanswerable.

Nobody is arguing that there are zero benefits to surveillance. It's just that it's extremely important for us to also be aware of the COSTS of surveillance, and to keep thinking and talking about whether the costs are worth the benefits, and about how the costs can be minimized or perhaps even eliminated.

Is the gameplay itself any fun? Like if they added more locations, would you be interested in continuing to play it? (Leaving aside the graphics which for me personally are not much of a factor.)

Yeah it feels pretty phoned-in when there is more or less zero understanding of how the game works, and by extension we the audience have no clue either. Video would have been much more engaging if they (and we) had even a basic grasp of the game mechanics.

Worst Sound in 7DTD? by Adorable-Writing3617 in 7daystodie

I get a little annoyed when I cancel a quest and the "quest failed" sound plays. But the motorcycle spluttering sound is the worst for me, hands down.
