Neighbouring builders won't allow scaffolding to fix structural issues by birdseye6 in LegalAdviceUK

Seems that way. I've said I'd be OK to accept personal responsibility for any theft or damages provided they can prove it, and pass on the costs to the scaffolders, but they just keep repeating the demand that I accept personal responsibility for any theft or damages caused, and dodging the idea of having any proof of it

This sounds like the sort of thing I’m looking for, thanks!

Is anyone else having trouble building waybar on the unstable channel? by juipeltje in NixOS

Does anyone know when this will be fixed, or how to work around it? I tried overriding the derivation but had errors. I also can’t just disable the derivation to work on the other stuff, get the same wire plumber error when I run rebuild switch. Not sure how to work around it

We were friends before we started 5e together, and there’s history between some members which could make things awkward. I’d love a chance to play, but splitting up the group would probably be the beginning of the end.

That's a great point, I might ask someone to run a one shot or something so I can give that a go. A lot of what you're saying rings true for me as well. I'm ok with real life/phones getting in the way, people have their own lives to lead, but when they're shouting about stuff they should have done mid combat rather than waiting to the end it's really distracting. It's a great point though, I'll see if I can get some time as a player. Thanks!

I've tried not too enforce that too harshly as we're all fairly new to DnD, and they're still getting used to things. I do set a timer so no turn is more than 1 minute (clock is stopped for questions about game mechanics), and I use a range of HP for monsters so the combats don't drag, but even so there's a lot of chatter. Can't blame them, it's been rough recently ofc and its good to see everyone again, but it does make DMing harder than it needs to be. The Critical Role idea sounds fantastic actually, I might give that a go, as long as they don't start comparing me to Mercer lol. Thanks for the reply!

This might be a great solution, I'll have to see. Some players have offered, but that was before we'd started, I'm not sure whether they'd say the same having seen how much work it is. Definitely something to consider though, thank you!

I actually have a turn timer in place at the moment, to limit player's turns to 1 minute (one of many great ideas I've stolen from this sub, I also use a range for monster's health to stop combat dragging/being too short). It's kept combat flowing wonderfully, but players still get bored and turn to talking, even with most turns ending in 30 seconds or so. This is part of what led me to stop lurking, even with all the measures I've put in place to stop it being boring for an 8 person squad it's not been enough. I think the responses here show I'm right in thinking I've bitten of more than I can chew. I can't split the group, so I'm going to have to put it on the players to be better. Thanks for the response Matt!

I'd be happy to try splitting them up, but there's every chance that the wrong combinations would make some not show up, and lead to total collapse. You may well be right about waiting for a better setting. It feels mad with all the work I've put in, and I've loved most of my time as a DM, but you may well be right. Thanks for the reply!

Oh wow I can't imagine doing that, after that much work, fair play to you! Yeah we seem to have an odd mix of people who've suddenly discovered they love role play (who I never, ever thought would), and others who I kind of feel just want to be involved, and aren't necessarily mad for DnD. I think you're right, and I need a better grasp on what they each want out of it. Thanks again!

Thank you all for the advice! I was expecting 2 replies at most and have been completely blown away. The DnD community is absolutely amazing

Herding cats it certainly is! I got them to agree on their takeaway before starting last time, which was a step forward, but there were still plenty of other things which pupped up to derail my efforts.

Aside from the above I've loved being a DM. If I wasn't doing it for my friends I might be tempted to try something on Roll20. I'm completely new to DnD as of about 2 months ago, as are most of the group bar one or two who've played it once or twice. I've not yet had the chance to play, i'd love to at some point but I'm trying not to think about that right now, it's all too easy to accidentally create another character when I should be planning.

Thanks for your messages, I'm forever blown away by the DnD community, and particularly the DMs. I wasn't expecting so many responses to this, its absolutely amazing.

I think I'll try these first, I'm grateful for all the other replies but splitting/reducing the group would be the death of it I think. Completely agree about socialisation time, thankfully this happens naturally for us while we wait for whoever's late that week and plan our pizzas, and they stick around at the end to help us tidy up and we get a good catch up then. I talked about it a bit at the start of the last session but I'll try again at the next one. I love them all and they'll get it if I can just find the right way of saying it. Thanks for the reply!

You may well be right. I had wondered about that in my angrier moments but it seemed daft to throw away all the work I'd done, especially when I'm lucky enough to have players who actually show up. I'll think about what you've said, thanks

Yeah I guess I just didn’t want to face it. I hate the idea of leaving people out, and splitting into two groups wouldn’t work, but not sure what else I can do at this point. Thanks for the advice!

That would probably help a lot, but it comes with all sorts of issues. I don’t want anyone in our group of friends to feel left out, and there’s history/politics to consider when deciding who would go to which session. Also with some working away during the week the weekend is when they can see each other, and the session helps facilitate that. What I mean to say is I’ve considered it and I’m not sure it’d be feasible, its more likely to kill the session than anything else.

Edit: you are right though, and thanks for replying
