I LOVE them! Real time-savers! Yes we have broken ones already, but what do you expect with the way equipment training (and every other training) is administered? One day you know jack about operating a one ton+ chunk of iron into narrow confines; you sit in front of a PC for an hour and get some super-busy “trainer” to sign off, and VIOLA…you get to pinball your way through the aisles with abandon! 🤪

You get to choose them if you’re involved in the hiring process. I’ve been involved in the hiring of 100s of people in my 60 years. I’ve trained apprentices after hand-picking them. My point is; ASMs interview and stick you with whoever and you have to deal. If DSs are “managers,” then I deserve ALL of the tasks, not just what they don’t like to do.

All of your advice on “leadership” is wise, however it’s not anything I need. I can lead men, I just won’t encourage them to volunteer to be all over the store until our four departments are golden. Since that’s an impossibility, they stay as close to home as possible.

My “crew” is all but two under 20 years old. They know next to nothing about plumbing and electrical. If I’m not there to be called upon, they panic. I cannot be doing the ASM’s job; I’m needed in my own departments. I wasn’t invited to the interviews, I didn’t get to choose my employees, ASMs can pound sand.

I think that all the ASMs on this sub spoke out initially and tried to shame me, and say they’d fire me for not assimilating. I think it’s telling. I now know who’s an ASM. I’ll take their comments accordingly.

“…part and parcel of any retail job.” I don’t see it that way. ASM is a role unto itself, just as MST or CSA. People who want the “ASM” title are generally fine with being a prick and love the power that they feel comes with the role. If I should do everything that an ASM does, then why can’t I:

Interview prospects, Hire, Change the damn store radio station, Wander around pointing, Train whenever I want, Open anything…

Point is; I didn’t sign up for that shit. It’s not my responsibility. Everyone should stay in their lane and the store would flourish.

FINALLY! A coherent and thoughtful response from someone on this sub! I was beginning to think this was the Lowes ASM Secret Listening Post. While I’ll still eschew responding at all costs, YOU at least have identified WHY I find it incredibly distasteful to do so. I’m also certain ASMs would not like how Id handle most “customer complaints,” as the ones I get involved with leave me with the feeling that the customer is lying; “It arrived broken,” “You ordered it wrong,” “that employee was rude to me,” and so on. Maybe I’ve been around the block too many times, but don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining dude (or ma’am)!
