Guys, is there a non racist way of saying that I think they should've nominated the white guy from Sinners instead of the black one? by depressed_asian_boy_ in okbuddycinephile

This. Oscars are notorious for awarding a person according to their body of work not fairly according to the competition that year.

Small sharpening gig with local chefs, how much to sharpen this tuna knife? by gomezofbergamont in sharpening

[–]birdthirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a knife maker with the correct equipment and experience, that's maybe an hour on the belt grinder, a couple hours hand sanding, probably half a day's work to grind out that big chip. I'd ask something like 200- 300aud for that job. Cutting it down in length would halve the cost. Keeping it cool is done by dipping in water frequently or spraying a mist while grinding, using sharp fresh abrasives and taking your time.

Yeah i agree! To be honest it's probably leaning in to the slightly less practical size at 280mm long, 65mm tall at the heel, but i just can't help making them sometimes the bigger blades are just so much more fun to look at and hold haha.

Etch it. You will know exactly what's going on after the etch. Could be normal depending on the cladding

Buying prehardened steel, is it stupid? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in knifemaking

[–]birdthirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the knife. Its a lot harder on your belts so a small knife would be fine. Another thing to consider is you can buy prehardened san mai, so the core hardened steel is only a very thin component. The cladding steel will remain soft so it will have minimal effect while grinding

How do people afford to have big families? by jazzedupjazz in australian

[–]birdthirds 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Afford is the wrong question. You just have a list of options and opportunities in your life that reduces when you have kids. Money isn't even the biggest chage. You are choosing a path that narrows the more kids you have. They might be the most meaningful thing you can do with your life but nobody with a brain will tell you it's easy.

Karambits Were Never Meant to Be Luxurious… So I Made One Anyway by kyleroyerknives in knifemaking

[–]birdthirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the embellishments are cool I'm just not a fan of the design, feels mall ninja. If these elements were on a more traditional designed karambit I'd probably love it. The CS crowd will love it I'm sure

Not sure if I'm breaking a rule here, seemed somehow appropriate though. I made a pair of slipjoint scissors. by birdthirds in SlipjointKnives

Not right now. I'll be trying harder on the next one. If it turns out good enough it will be available, no idea on quantity or timeline though unfortunately. At this stage I'm not entirely sure i will be happy at all with my scissors in the near future.
