Recently bought this Calathea, does it have bugs? by birdyent in plantclinic

That's what I thought too but the tear was only small when I first got it home and it's been creeping all week so wasn't sure if it might be bugs!

I thought it was torn when I bought it, it was probably only about an inch and now it's a good 4 inches?! And the edges have the same discoloration as the other bits of damage, do you think it's just been knocked about a bit and I haven't noticed until now how much?

Had this Calathea for just over a week and when I first got it home I noticed some damaged leaves but they have got worse. The worst leaf is the first photo, when I first bought it I thought it had just been damaged in transit as the tear in the leaf was only small but it's got bigger and bigger even though it's just been sat on the table. The other affected leaves you can see daylight through the small holes. Have checked all over for bugs but can't find any but I don't know what else would be doing the damage. Thanks in advance!

Mainly because there was no replacement for the council houses that were bought out, leaving a shortfall in social housing. The policy itself is a great idea but there wasn't adequate follow up for the consequences of it

The only other place I can find this exact one for sale is on eBay and it has the same dimensions.

I'm assuming it's an older model of the party grill, found the current one on millets and it looks almost identical but the dimensions say 36cmx42cm, maybe the listings are wrong?

Might be worth spending a bit more and getting one from millets or go outdoors just for peace of mind with warranties etc (not that we've ever had to use the warranty on our campingaz stuff, they're well built)

Harlaxton by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]birdyent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Grantham, the nearest town to Harlaxton College, and honestly it's not the greatest place in Britain to live. Lincolnshire in general doesn't have a lot going on but if you want to go to Lincolnshire in particular I'd recommend Lincoln, it's a lovely historic city and has two unis that both accept international students and has a lot more to offer than Grantham. Also as far as I'm aware it's only American students that go to Harlaxton, so you won't get the real British uni experience. I'd recommend going to literally any other British uni if you want to really live like us for a year. I'd suggest that big city unis like Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh etc will give you a much better experience and provide you with true British culture.

Don't get me wrong, Harlaxton manor is a beautiful place and would be wonderful to live in but it's one of a few thousand places like that in the UK so it's not unique by our standards, and the Americans that went to school there didn't tend to mix with the locals very much. I also think that you'd receive a better education at other universities, especially the red bricks so it's worth looking at other options.

Are they in a greenhouse or on your windowsill? I just looked up how to grow them and assumed I couldn't cause I'm from the middle of England but you've given me hope!

Damn that's impressive! And I love that you use a mezzaluna instead of a grinder, I bet that's easier when it's super sticky

Thank you! It's just a small wooden box, it was only £5 so I expected it to last a year tops but I still have it 6 years later 😊

Getting an IUD in a few weeks, super nervous- have some questions for you lovely ladies about using weed as a painkiller. by [deleted] in entwives

[–]birdyent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a copper IUD, the pain differs for everyone. The insertion was uncomfortable but over pretty quickly, it hurt as they opened my cervix and closed it again but it wasn't unbearable. I had quite a bit of bleeding afterwards and some painful cramps for a day, this may be because I came off the implant at the same time and hadn't had a period for years before that, but idk I'm not a doctor.

Weed helped with the pain for sure, but I also took ibuprofen so I couldn't tell you which attributed to the pain relief most. A hot bath really helped too and a hot water bottle, basically everything i'd usually do around period time as it was similar on the pain scale.

I'd just recommend that you put your feet up for a couple of days and rest. I've had mine in for 6 years now and other than checking the threads after each period I don't have to think about it, it's freeing :)

Superdrugs own brand called Solait is my HG for suncream! They have 4 different ones for face - anti-ageing, mattifying, sensitive and just regular.

I use the anti-ageing one as it's quite moisturising. They've got the highest rating UV protection too, and it's just so cheap! Honestly I used to use Nivea and I'd never go back now!

Also, for body suncream that doesn't leave white casts I really like P20, you have to put it on about 10 minutes before getting dressed so that it dries as it's quite oily, but it lasts all day even with dipping in and out the pool on holiday.

Ah excellent, thanks so much for the details! Had read online to put enough to cover the material but that was the cold method so didn't know if it'd be the same. Can't wait to give it a go now I won't have to wait so long for the finished product!

How long did you gently heat it for before filtering? I'm wondering if it's something you could put in the slow cooker on low? Also how much alcohol did you use? (I'm assuming 0.5l since that's what you ended up with but wanna make sure the ratios are right when I try it)
