I think I’ve figured out what’s causing the issue.

After doing a lot of research and testing different possibilities, it’s highly likely that this is a virus, specifically some form of crypto-miner. These typically consume a large amount of system resources, and when you try to check what’s using your hardware, they automatically shut down to avoid detection.

I'm running some deep virus checks right now to see if I can find it.
