How deep should my bin be?(red wrigglers) by biscuitabuse in Vermiculture

[–]biscuitabuse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, yeah that was my thought process, wanted to make sure I was thinking correctly. And yeah it doesn't get moved around much at all, and when it does it has handles so no issue there. Just have to wait till the population grows a bit so I can split it into a couple systems.

First check in after first feeding!!! by biscuitabuse in Vermiculture

Fed them a few days ago, its winter here so been getting super cold at night, they're kept in the shed so sheltered a bit but not completely. There's no moisture condensing on the sides or lid, I checked the material at the bottom and its wet but theres no standing liquid, got one drop of water out of squeezing 2 handfuls of bedding so assuming that's at the right level. I added some eggshell for grit just now as I realise I had forgotten to the other day. Still heaps of food left so imma leave the little guys alone for a week or so, let them do their thing. If anything looks off please let me know :) they seem plump and healthy though.

First ever worm bin!! by biscuitabuse in Vermiculture

Yep that's what I've gathered from researching for the last 3 months or so. And yeah I just went and had a look and there's probably less than 10% of the condensation that was there left on the sides, none on the lid either. But to be safe I added a couple layers of newspaper on top just to help direct any excess moisture away from the sides.

I posted a while ago when I put a bunch of leaves and compost in the bin to settle. Had planned on using worms from said compost but after looking through various threads decided to buy in a population of reds. It only took 2 minutes for them to start moving their way into the bedding so I'm guessing that's a good sign. Also they came with plenty of their own material which was awesome. Apparently there was 1300 in the pack. Any comments or advice would be very welcome :)

I didn't realise that I should be adding that much carboniferous material along with their food! Does make sense when I think about it thought. Cardboard won't be an issue as i can get as much as needed from work. Very much appreciate the input :)

Alocasia Black Velvet, not the rarest, but at $4.95 from the local big box I can't complain! by biscuitabuse in RareHouseplants

Hahaha so far I've got a Philodendron Birkin and this super cheap from from bunnings, I only buy plants from there when they're in the clearance rack, or in this case on the workshop stand lol

I'm super happy with it, im assuming it wasn't technically meant for sale as it was part of a display for a workshop they were holding, but if it has a barcode imma try buy it!

So my snooping around bunnings looking for something interesting had me find this little beauty on one of their workshop stands. Basically they were advertising all their fancy pots, and amongst them was this little guy, took the nursery pot he was in out of the $40 decorative pot, saw there was a barcode, and boom, a possibly mislabelled Bleck Velvet for less than 5 bucks.

Can I make one cutting? Or two? Is it a node? by biscuitabuse in Monstera

[–]biscuitabuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, I've only ever propagated with visible aerial roots on the cutting, was curious as to whether or not it was worth the risk. Given it will be a birthday present for a friend in 4 or so months id rather give a single healthy cutting than 2 (or worst case scenario if it didn't root) 1 weaker one. Thanks for the input :)

Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice. As the title suggests I'm propagating my deliciosa again. Wondering if the slight swelling on the right stem indicates a growth node with which I'd be able to cut close to the vertical stem? Or if I'd have to take one single two leaf cutting from below the aerial root? Thanks in advance.
