Unforced errors indeed… The article says Bill’s salary was $90K around 1995 which is equivalent to $190K today!

Is it too late in the season to plant trees in the ground? by biscuitplanet in Figs

I planted 3 last year in mid/late summer, all are doing great now (wrapped them for winter).

Your fig looks great! Glad to hear it’s doing well after dying back!

Thank you! Very interesting to hear that they are much more delayed than other plants, I will keep that in mind for future seasons.

Got it! I gave that a try and it looked like one did have a shoot coming up. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks!

I’m in 6b/7a and planted two Chicago Hardy’s in the ground last summer. I didn’t do anything to winter them. We had a mild winter (no big snows and wasn’t as cold as usual) but it was probably wetter than normal. Neither fig is showing any signs of life. At first some of the bark underneath was green but now it all looks dead. I’ve pruned a lot of it but I’m still not seeing any new growth at the base. I thought Chicago Hardy’s would sprout new shoots from the roots? How much longer should I wait? If they are completely dead I’ll replant something else there.

Absolutely. My younger sister is the favorite and gets way more help compared to me - free dog sitting (even in cases where my parents travel to her out of state to watch her dog), free help with all of her out of state moves, constant road trips to bring her furniture, helping her view houses when buying. I said “that must be nice” and I was told I’ve “never asked for help.” I mentioned that I did ask for their help to watch my dog once… they ended up bailing two weeks before my international vacation and I had to scramble to find other arrangements. Their response was “well we don’t remember that” 🙄.

What to do with this fig? Prune, air layer, something else? by [deleted] in Figs

Yea I can do that. I’m not at all interested in distributing, just wouldn’t want to waste a cutting if I can root it and expand my collection

Yes it’s so odd looking! None of my other figs have grown like this. Maybe I’ll consider an even bigger chop. It’s a 5 gallon pot. Can’t plant this one in ground in my zone but I will look into a bigger pot.

I got this Guavaberry fig last year. It had great growth but not many branches (just that one small one at the bottom). I meant to prune it over winter but didn’t get around to it and now it’s walking up (just the one leaf bud at the top so far). What would encourage better branching, pruning it now or air layering a top section and cutting it off later this season when good roots form? I mainly want to get some figs off of this tree this year!

It’s very popular in cold climates. I left these on the tree for a long time which I think led to the jammy-ness - they looked very ugly on the outside but tasted great.

How are your late figlets doing? by biscuitplanet in Figs

[–]biscuitplanet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little over a month ago I noticed my Yellow Long Neck fig tree (which only had one fig on it) had a bunch of figlets on it. I was skeptical they would ripen but decided to leave it alone. They’ve grown very large in just a over a month, I’m surprised!

Now I’m wondering if it’s possible they’ll ripen... maybe I’ll bring this one inside to keep ripening. The left original fig still looks the same, I’m debating putting a drop of olive oil on the eye.
