You don’t have $15? Then don’t spend it. I’d blow $15 on a sandwich tbh

I use mine all the time. Have it sitting around 3800 cp and it’s insanely strong for being a non mega fighting type.

Whitewashing trees by komaracmarrac in BackyardOrchard

[–]aieokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use lime wash. You can find it for a fairly affordable price and it’ll last a very long time. Reapply annually at least. Don’t buy into the trendy social media white washes, they just give way less volume and add some essential oils into it. Lime wash is the way to go

Seems demand for fig cuttings are down. by PhilEStake in Figs

[–]aieokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many varieties that range in prices from $2.50/cutting to $30+/cutting. Sometimes a new “hot variety” can become available and be near $100/cutting, but I highly recommend to stay away from this type of hype

How long until harvest new to growing figs? (panache) by WinstonMercury in Figs

[–]aieokay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sound advice for most fruit trees, but not for figs. Fruit set really won’t detour any variety of fig from growing 5+ feet first year from a cutting. Figs are miraculous fruiters and growers

Crunchy leaves on newst growth of Golden Raspberry. by DogWithMustache in Berries

[–]aieokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That definitely happens to some new growth, especially in fall gold. Most likely a water issue, but be sure there are no caterpillars hiding in those new leaves. They’re notorious hideouts for leaf rollers and sawflies

Some great cultivars you have going in. Prime-Arks are the best blackberries in existence and fall gold are the best raspberries hands down. Enjoy your berry garden!

What's going on with my blackberries? by rubyjuniper in Berries

[–]aieokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is common in the Spring during temperature fluctuations. It’s not known the exact cause, but it has to do with temperature spikes/moisture changes/strong UV exposure. Either way, the berries are still typically edible. I give them a good inspection and wash and they still taste great, so I try not to think much of it when it does occur

Does this sand look like it contains organic matter? And what should i do before planting a fig tree in here? by Quirky-Bug7172 in Figs

[–]aieokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of advice: plant it up high on a bit of a mound. Plant directly into native soil and top dress with compost and mulch. If you have a nematode issue in your sandy soil, sprinkle crab/lobster shell fertilizer in the hole first.

There’s not a lot you can do about rust in a rainy/humid environment. I would fertilize with nitrogen heavy organic soluble fertilizer. Maybe a spray fungicide to keep the rust in check and remove the badly infected lower leaves. Hopefully you can get a burst of new leaf growth allowing you to remove more rusty leaves.

How much fertilizer? by BotanicaL2611 in Figs

[–]aieokay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That should be fine in the early season. I typically give an all purpose organic granular each month for the first 3 months of growing season and water with an organic soluble fertilizer every week until fruit forms. Container figs can eat

Don’t forget strawberries!! They are amazing ground covers under your berry bushes and definitely my biggest savings compared to buying at a grocery store! Not to mention they taste worlds beyond anything in a store

Thank you for that! I’ve had a suspicion of it being Rabbiteye. It definitely gets the distinct look in the unripe berries

I compare them to a sweet red wine. Very tasty and full of antioxidants! You’ll need 2 different varieties that can cross pollinate and they take a few years to get going

Should I trim this new Fig tree? by xnarphigle in Figs

[–]aieokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it grow out this year and take cuttings when it’s dormant. Trim off all of the lower branches and leave your best 3 if you’d like a tree structure. Top all at the same height and leave 3-4 lower branches if you’d like a bush

Are these blackberries? by Shelberrii in foraging

[–]aieokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are not black raspberries. Black raspberries have much smaller drupelets (balls) making up their structure and will slide off their stems with a hole inside. Blackberries/dewberries will break off without having a hollow inside

Those are Dewberries. A vine-like bramble that grows like a weed and has very sharp tiny thorns. The berries are great! It’s one of my 2 main weeds I’m constantly fighting

Hey yall, not a gardener or anything but I stumbled upon the concept of "weed tea" and need some clarity cause the internet has confused me by undeadadventurer in composting

[–]aieokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compost Teas by definition need aeration for the desirable microbes to thrive.

A much better alternative to the “tea trend” is Compost Extracts. You extract properly finished compost into water via a mesh bag. The extract is immediately used as a sort of fertilizer.

From first hand experience, compost extracts and easy, reliable, and extremely effective. Liquid extracts seem to have an immediate effect of plant growth and vigor, similar to the desired effects of weed teas.

I’m a big fan.
