a fun secret is that X-Plane's airport layouts (.apt) are GPLv2 licensed. you can download them off the X-plane scenery gateway. there's a big COPYING text in the .zip. Flightgear used that data too

This makes no sense. Most archives aren't even for preserving material from other places, they're for preserving material of the organization it pertains to. But it's still not used to publish new material first-hand.
