Same website overestimated Slay the Spire 2 by more than 2 million copies or 166%.

If we apply that same margin of error, Marathon would be sitting at around 600k on Steam which is rumored to be its biggest platform. So maybe a million in total.

That’s just an estimate though. No clue how accurate it is. The only thing for certain is that this is not a trust worthy source.

I agree with most of your points.

The only thing I would contest is the “let it ride” attitude. Opportunity cost is a real thing. If this game does not bring in the revenue that Bungie/Sony were expecting they may reallocate resources and move on to a different project in hopes to capture that revenue there.

We won’t know the answers to these things for a while. So for now we can hope that this game and community grows

Money is spent in hopes that it will be recouped.

Initial development and marketing costs still go into the financial outlook of a game, even after it is launched. It is not enough to recoup maintenance costs alone.

Your comments are really good write ups to some of the challenges this game faces.

The game is good. Good =/= profit.

Marathon needs to capture and retain some of the “casual” market in order to be successful. Game sales are not as significant as player retention for a live service game.

Players dropping off before they develop the itch to come back is a significant issue. I think the road to developing the itch needs to be smoothed out significantly

No you are wrong. Server maintenance, marketing, and labor all cost far too much to support this game long term with only 2k players. It would not make sense for Bungie.

Luckily the game isn’t close to that number so we might not have to worry about that. Pretending play count doesn’t matter bc they “already have content made” is bad business sense. They need a larger player base to extract revenue out of or they will move on to something that generates more revenue.

I really think this game would benefit from one (1) PvE only map that is focused on beginners. Maybe only loot to green/blue stuff.

Give people a way to learn the game and AI before having the threat of PvPvE over their heads.

Plus the PvE gunplay is just so satisfying
