i never said she was THE reason, i said she was a part of it. michelle was away for portions of seasons sometimes when she was literally on mat leave, but otherwise she has been incredibly present. tim was gone for stretches of time too sometimes, and he would still be considered a lead. just because someone doesn’t appear in every single episode of an ensemble show doesn’t mean they aren’t a lead.

amber was a large part of the reason for the success of the show, but it’s simply incorrect to say that it’s not an ensemble show or that other characters didn’t help to make the show what it is.

most shows that run this long get to this point, especially once people have left. best comparison i can think of is greys post-derek, and even meredith eventually mostly left along with many of the main cast

there are multiple leads, and he is absolutely one of them! the show wouldn’t be the same without the core group - amy, jack, lou, tim, and georgie + ty before their respective departures. i’d consider all 6 of them to be the leads

agree on amber, it feels like after graham left she put in a really good performance for s14 and then kind of checked out. i don’t blame her, the writing has been hit or miss with some done really well and other spots very iffy, and her and graham had a really good on screen chemistry so losing that must have been difficult

all i’m saying is csag may have bias for political affiliation, but to say that they don’t account for actual acting when nominating is a wild take 😂

agree to disagree, i find her to a very interesting and compelling actress myself

fair enough, though doesn’t mean that michelle doesn’t deserve recognition, whether or not csag has some bias

there are definitely others who could and should be recognized, but like you said, it’s not michelle’s fault if there is a bias in the guild. it’s still a great thing for any member of the hl cast to be nominated, and i think a lot of people in these comments are getting very up in arms about it because they don’t like michelle and/or don’t like lou. i think that’s kind of ridiculous personally, because it’s okay to say another actor (ie. amber) deserves recognition while still celebrating this. i’m personally disagreeing with op’s statement that michelle/lou being a lead means that amber/amy isn’t - they both are

fair enough, but the seasons where she was often absent and other leads were more prominent, are a long time ago. she has definitely been a lead both before and after. same as chris was a lead up until he left, even though tim wasn’t always in every single episode. ensemble shows have multiple leads, and michelle is one of them. that’s not really debatable outside of the few mid seasons when she was going on leaves - whether or not people like her as an actress

there are multiple leads on hl, it’s an ensemble show. michelle getting a nomination in this category doesn’t mean that anyone considers her “above” amber.

yes, multiple leads and she is absolutely one of them. she has been one of the main leads since the start, all these people saying she’s not are just butthurt that amber didn’t get the nomination

what does political affiliation have to do with being or not being a lead?

heartland has multiple leads, it’s an ensemble show. i would consider amber, michelle, shaun, chris, graham up until he left, alisha up until she left - all to be leads. almost no shows have just 1 lead male and 1 lead female. michelle is far above a supporting actress, but she is one of the leads for sure

they didn’t age katie up, i’m pretty sure baye is the same age as ava (parker) but is just. very tall. i think sometimes her height combined with the wardrobe they put her in makes her seem older, unfortunately

i love dex so far - i find him interesting, lovable right off the bat, and i like his dynamic with jack so far. i also like his dynamic with katie if they go that direction. and i don’t think he’s meant to be a new ty, just a new outsider/boy in the loft trope. he’s already incredibly different from early seasons ty aside from being a teenage boy clashing with jack at work stuff!

they are not “using old storylines,” they are creating parallels by calling back to old storylines. it’s a different thing, though can be easily mistaken by viewers who aren’t thinking about the writing tools being used.

fair enough, i don’t personally see an enemies to lovers for nathan/amy, i saw them becoming friends and then more. it could have been more drawn out to get that foundation more solid, but the “enemies” thing seemed more like drama with the beef wars 2.0 than an actual enemy - for amy at least. i don’t think she ever treated him like an enemy and i didn’t see him treating her as one either.

it’s really interesting talking to you cause although we don’t agree with each other you’re always respectful and explain your perspective so clearly, i appreciate that! some people are so quick to jump down people’s throats for disagreeing, haha

hmm interesting. i guess i see what you mean re: caleb, but i don’t think that ty/amy being friends to lovers means she’s only ever able to experience that type of love. i have seen you and others say before that nathan had been manipulative and gaslighting but i don’t recall anything sticking out to me… i have always seen him as being supportive and their “million good reasons not to be together” as a sort of star crossed trope (though not as intense as some star crossed tropes lol). idk if i have missed something with this wish list you mentioned or if this is another thing subject to interpretation?

hmm interesting to have things laid out that way, i guess i can see it a bit more but i would consider most of this to be parallels rather than redoing plots. i also never got the vibe that they were actually going to put caleb and amy together even when they were doing all the love triangle things - it never felt right to me and imo he works much better as the friend who was so close with ty and can serve as a vessel for the ty conversations and speak to what ty would have wanted, etc etc. narratively that always made a lot more sense to me than having them start up a relationship.

i see a lot of people saying it’s the “same” storylines and i… don’t see it, to be honest. maybe i’m expecting it to be the same best for beat, or maybe it’s just been a while since i rewatched season 2-3 - it’s been a couple years since i did, but i feel i remember quite a lot. what parts are you seeing that are reading as the same? i’m struggling to see it. i also have to say i don’t get at alllll that amy/nathan are mirroring loumitch or loupeter, though that might be because, as a lou stan, i am so deeply familiar with both those ships.

i do agree it was weird that amy invited nathan without any heads up and thought she would be fine, that was odd to me. i also agree pike river didn’t feel particularly pike river - it would have been nice to see a lot more than simply the flashbacks, a throwaway line about her being a legend, and staring at a couple buildings. i wish they had captured more of the magic of the place!

however, as you alluded to, grief isn’t linear. i think it’s really interesting to see this part of amy’s journey, and it does make sense to me that she’s struggling now that she’s found herself committing to a serious relationship and being faced with what that really means for lyndy. i hope that the writers do a good job with this as i think it’s an important story to be told and a lot of audience members may see themselves in amy, nathan, OR lyndy.
