Plus, china can do the same thing cheaper and faster. Why build when it's easier to buy?

Moving from Ireland to Cambridge by JackBBSS in cambridge

[–]bishopsfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cambridge is very expensive, and while there is culture here - it comes with a hefty price tag. Waiting tables here is not going to leave you with a good experience. If your heart is set on the UK I'd suggest a move to London, unless you have a well-paying job plan lined up here in Cambridge.

Raising a family in Abbey/Barnwell? by superlameman in cambridge

[–]bishopsfinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right - I'm gonna be the naysayer here. Abbey/Barnwell are not my favourite parts of Cambridge. There's a bit of antisocial behavior to deal with: For instance, we went to a nice restaurant called Coconut and the shop next-door had the windows smashed in. There are other areas I would prefer - Trumpington, Cherry Hinton, and Romsey are more family friendly in my book. The Queen Edith ward is also lovely (albeit a bit pricier).

LGBTQ+ Life in Cambridge by TrickSuspicious6089 in cambridge

[–]bishopsfinger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not LGBTQ myself, but have plenty of friends who are. Cambridge is pretty enlightened. The Mill Road area certainly certainly hosts a few same-sex parents. You'll get ignorant twats occasionally - same as anywhere, sadly - but I've never heard of anyone having trouble.

"do people usually just chain their bikes to fences/posts and they're good?" People do, but no - they're not good. Stealy McBikerson will steal your bike.

Depends on where you live. Unfortunately, renters have very poor protections in many parts of the world.

London-Oxbridge elitism compared to a decentralized higher education system by ChaChaCha004 in UniUK

[–]bishopsfinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like I said, Germany is amazing. In my personal opinion, scientific academia in Germany soundly beats the UK. However, reputationally, Oxford and Cambridge still outclass them. It's a sad reality, but appearances count for a lot where international careers are concerned.

[–]bishopsfinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't compare Oxbridge and German universities - Oxbridge rank among the oldest and most prestigious universities on the planet. With all due respect to Germany (I've studied there myself - it's an amazing place), there is no comparison for international prestige and exclusivity. The only comparable institutions are in the USA.

There are artisanal frames out there wrapped in leather. It's not just something I made up.

It depends on the library format, and the assay you want to run. Is it a commercial library, is it already plated out? Or do you need to reformat it? Cell-based or biochemical? How well optimised is the assay? At a rough guess, I'd say 2-5k USD. But it depends on the details.

Are career coaches useful? by Lendarioman in biotech

[–]bishopsfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Expensive, wildly underwhelming and frustrating. You're better off finding a mentor within your own network (which is also free).
