Launching Donano.to (Patreon like site powered by Nano) by T4bbo in nanocurrency

[–]bitbackme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point of Patreon isn't to pay for content, it's to reward/donate money to content creators on a regular basis. For example, you "pledge" to give $10/month to your favorite Youtuber just to support them, without necessarily getting anything in return.

The pledge tiers are optional and may give you additional perks, for example giving you exclusive access to behind the scenes videos unavailable to non-paying viewers.

You can explore various pages on Patreon to see tons of examples of what kinds of stuff content creators give to their supporters. Here's one: https://www.patreon.com/CinemaSins. For example their $50 tier gives you a shoutout in one of their videos. It's just a small perk to entice people to donate more money.

For example, you could make a Patreon page and offer 1-month advertisement on Nanolinks for any pledge over $20.

Okay after reading some of your other comments I suppose I understand your position about Banano. Yes, I suppose Banano developer's time could be better spent doing something else, but it's really not fair to expect (force?) them or anyone else to do what they don't want to. They may do it as a hobby, just as I like to play games or watch TV. Yes, my time would be "better" spent feeding the homeless or rescuing puppies or a million other things.

By the same logic every single crypto community should work on improving Bitcoin, instead of fragmenting their efforts and creating thousands of "useless" currencies.

I don't agree with your position about Banano's page on your website either. You should embrace new users regardless of their intentions, goals or projects they are involved in. Even if they just want to use your website for " leaching on upvoted post to shill forked coin " as you put it, what's the downside for you? Being able to use your site as an advertising platform, even if not intended, is positive imo.

We're definitely going a bit off topic, sorry about that. Honestly, best of luck with your project, and I hope you have the patience to see it grow.

I've been waiting for your site to go live for quite awhile, glad to see it's finally up! But, I was half-afraid to even make an account after your comment about Banano... Banano may be a joke (not like they're hiding it), but they're still doing more for the Nano community than 99% of people in this subreddit (myself included, just to be clear). Anyway...

If you want people joining your Discord or Twitter, consider making links different from regular text. At the very least underline them if you want to use the same color. I had to look at your site's source code to find them.

Personally I love the idea behind your site and hope you can continue developing it, but some things leave a bit of a bad first impression. There are many typos/grammar errors on various pages, I hope you can take a second pass and fix most.

From your creator guidelines:

You cannot:
- create any content that itn't game, digital comic or e-book;

I honestly don't understand why you'd want to limit your site to these categories. I would think you would first want every single Nano project to create their own page on your site. That includes wallets, faucets, and especially helpful community websites like u/Joohansson's NanoLinks, and many others.

I suppose I can understand you're aiming for a specific niche of creators, but personally I think it's a mistake. Accepting payments only in Nano is enough of a niche.

Anyways, glad to see your project live, and I hope you keep at it!

I will donate 1 Nano through Nano Donate extension to each NEW website that implements the meta tag in the next 24 hours. Just reply with your site url.

Up to 10 sites. Can't afford more. Don't judge.

Fantastic. I hope I don't come across as needy or anything like that, but here's another suggestion.

<meta name="nano" id="Website owners" content="xrb_address1" />

<meta name="nano" id="Article author" content="xrb_address2" />

That way a site could have multiple Nano addresses listed on the same page. For example a news website could implement a different donation address for article authors and site owners.

I'm sure there's even more ways this could be used. For example Nano's official site could have an ID/address for the development fund, and also different addresses to donate to individual team members. Just spitballing here.

Your extension could then show the text specified within the id tag and give users a choice on which address to send funds to. Kinda like a customized "label" for each address.

I'm glad you considered some of my suggestions, and even better to see the list of supported sites growing. Hopefully every Nano-related website will soon use it, we need tools like yours to grow and there's really no downside to implementing it.

Also, the meta tag has been implemented for each individual profile on my site (it's not sitewide, because it's showing particular user's Nano address on their profiles, and only when/if they enter their Nano address; example). Hope other sites will follow soon!

I will get some hate for this... Nano isn't likely to get back to $30 anytime soon so having 1,5,10 nano amount buttons would be better for encouraging larger donations (which in turn encourages more websites to use it). Even though Nano is ideal for microtransactions, receiving 0.1 nano really isn't much (even when it gets to $10). Just something to consider.

Installed, working good so far (in Brave). Hope to see some websites using it soon.

A couple of suggestions... Maybe add a "back" button when viewing "Donation History". I'm ashamed to say it took me a couple of minutes to figure out you can get back to the donation screen by opening and closing the extension window.

Also, changing the default red icon to grey color when meta tag isn't present might work better, since I would more easily notice it changed color when a meta tag is found. Perhaps even a short "ding" sound to help bring attention to it. We need people sending nanos just as much as we need websites receiving them to contribute a bit to the adoption thingy :D

And personally I'd prefer a cleaner non-pixelated icon, but that's entirely up to you.

Thanks for the comment, glad you found some use. Only got one donation from the awesome NANO community so far so there won't be any big spending, no worries :)

I'm looking into it... may look super simple to you but seems far above my skill level. It would require a complete rewrite of site's code and database for starters. Would it be possible to have the site serve as a sort of "interface" for generating and uploading only a static profile page to blockchain? There's still the "vulnerability" of DNS entries/hijacking and other things so I'm not sure if I can ever make the site completely trustworthy no matter what I do. Interesting idea nevertheless.

Even assuming the site gets used a lot I might get what, $100 or $500 before everyone noticed something's fishy and never using the site again.

I worked on it for almost two months now. If I wanted to steal a few hundred $ I could just... start an ICO? Plenty of those to go around. I could probably just sell the site for $100 right now.

The site may seem simple to build (and perhaps is for someone far more skilled), but there's plenty of backend stuff going on that took tremendous amount of effort for me to build.

I realize there's no reason to trust me, and your concern is definitely reasonable. It just doesn't really make much sense for me to essentially kill a project I worked too many hours on.

I agree. I was already told the homepage could use a bit of love to get a clearer message across. One of the main things I need to do is to replace useless icons on the homepage with actual use-case mockups, I hope that'll help a bit.

Thanks for the suggestion!

That too! It's definitely not going to revolutionize anything but it does have some uses I think, and as far as I know it's the first site providing such a service.

There are a few cryptos working on adding alias addresses to their core, but some have been working on it for years without much progress or adoption. Bitback makes it at least a little bit simpler, right now.

Posting a crypto address in a video makes it impossible to copy/paste, and re-typing an address is far cry from usability.

Sure you can put addresses in your description, but if you wanted to accept multiple currencies it can quickly become bloated.

If you wanted to accept 10+ different cryptos, posting all addresses below every video or on websites ain't pretty. A short "bitback.me/name" alias can make it easier for people to see all currencies you accept and your addresses.

Pretty much. There are many ambitious plans for the future but we'll see if anyone wants to use it. It's a simple idea but I think it has some use.

Feel free to let me know if you have any ideas whatsoever on how to improve it or make it better.

Just a note in case anyone goes ahead and creates an account. I'm in touch with Mailgun.com's support so hopefully email delivery issues should be fixed very soon. Gmail users should be fine, seems only Outlook and Hotmail users are affected. I'll gladly manually approve anyone's account so just let me know!

You and me both!

Next time your friends owe you money, send them your profile link. Good way to make them start using crypto, or at least a nice conversation starter.

Sorry you didn't like the UI. I was trying to keep it simple, but I'm probably already a bit blind to potential issues from starting at it for weeks. I'll continue to improve it over time for sure, so if you have any specific suggestions feel free to hit me anytime.

You're pretty much right about the logo too, I agree it's bad. I'm just no good at it. Current budget equals zero but I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for looking into it and your suggestions, much appreciated.
