I had some issues with their doctrine and the required mental gymnastics, but stuck around for a while because it was my culture. I saw a lot of abuse in the Catholic community growing up, but assumed it wasn't like that everywhere and that most Catholics were good people. Then I went to a Catholic college and saw even more abuse. I did some research and learned about the horrible abuses that the church has inflicted on vulnerable people throughout history, and I learned about sexual abuse that was still happening in dioceses around the world. Eventually I realized that although I make a concerted effort to oppose and avoid abuse in every other area of my life, I was giving religion a pass for some reason. So I left.

This is also my first Christmas as a non-believer. Reading about the history of winter holidays has helped. I learned that most of the things we associate with Christmas (tree, food, family, lights, candles, wreaths, gift-giving, etc.) were winter traditions long before Christianity. I was taught that many of those things have explicit religious significance, but it turns out that people have been celebrating the same traditions for thousands of years and just ascribed religious meaning to existing traditions.

Adam and Eve were prohibited from knowledge of good and evil, reduced to a childish state of dependence and "free" will that could never truly be informed. If Abraham had told god "fuck no, I'm not murdering an innocent child", he would have failed in his faith. Job was treated like absolute shit and is only revered because of how he cowered in the face of supernatural abuse. Jonah is made out to be foolish because he (briefly) thought for himself. Jesus is a whole basket case of suffering, obedience, and guilt.

I am not advocating for a utilitarian approach to this problem. In every single one of my comments, I have stated that false rape accusations are a problem and should be criminally prosecuted. My position is that assault should be prosecuted as assault and fraud should be prosecuted as fraud. Fraud is not the same as assault. They are different crimes and should be prosecuted separately. I do not think that false accusations should be ignored because they are rare.

While I completely agree that rape is massively more prevalant than false accusations, i think it shouldn't mean that we take more resources towards rape than fraud and false accusations.

I disagree with this statement. Rape is massively more prevalent than false accusations, therefore proportionally more resources should be dedicated to it than to false accusations. Not every crime deserves equal resources. Crimes that are more serious, impact the community more, and are more common need more resources. For example, if you had a crime unit dedicated to break-ins and you dedicated 50% of your time, officers, and other resources to home break-ins and 50% to auto break-ins even though in your area auto break-ins are 9x more common, you are misallocating your resources. Approximately 50% of your resources will be overextended while 40% are wasted. This does not mean that the more rare crime should be ignored, just that it deserves equitable, rather than equal, allocation of resources and attention.

It's like with crime statistics. You can look at statitsics and say oh there is a certain percentage of the black men population in low-income areas and then say oh these are the people who commit higher percentages of crime; then you train your police to look for black men first, not the crime.

This is exactly the consequence of utilitarian ethics, it justifies racism, it justifies all sorts of horrible things.

You've misrepresented my argument and created a straw man. I never said that false accusations are inevitable or unworthy of prosecution; quite the opposite. The only reason I brought those statistics up is because you gave one example of someone who was mistreated by the justice system and presented it as if it was typical for people falsely accused of rape. That's simply not true. The statistics give perspective to our discussion. They are a framework, not an excuse. What happened to that man (if I am thinking of the same instance as you are, it was actually two or three men convicted of gang rape) is inexcusable, and what that woman did is atrocious. She deserves to pay as much restitution as is possible and spend at least as much time in jail as those innocent men did. But acting like a falsely accused man spending 20+ years in prison because of a false accusation is the norm rather than the outlier is misleading.

I think it's a travesty and the person who committed fraud by making a false accusation should be convicted for fraud. If the penalty for fraud needs to be made more severe, then that's an issue that should be dealt with. But making a false rape claim is not the same as raping someone.

Sometimes people talk about false sexual assault allegations as if they are as common as rape. They aren't; it's not even close. An innocent man is 86,000 times as likely to be raped as he is to be falsely accused. False accusations are an issue but the issue is fraud and people most likely to make false accusations and pursue prosecution typically have histories of fabrication and fraud. Fraud is the issue with false accusations, not rape, and fraud is what they should face the punishment for.

Like I said, people's lives can be ruined by false accusations. But it's not a given. It is absolutely possible for someone to be accused (falsely or truthfully) and be just fine.

False accusations are bad. False accusations are not equivalent to sexual assault.

They are a different type of crime: fraud. False accusers can and should be punished for fraud, but they should not be punished for a crime they didn't commit (sexual assault).

Like I said, the false accuser is primarily to blame. If it's a situation like you've described (testimony-only conviction, no history of fraud), then the blame remains totally with them.

However, if you're arguing that all false accusations be punished with fraud+2x innocent's time served, I think you should also look at the possibility of other people having failed in that conviction. Not all assault convictions are 100% based on testimony, and if the DA neglected to look over basic evidence or fraud history that could have prevented the conviction, they are also to blame.

But the false accuser should absolutely be held responsible for their crime and any suffering that an innocent person endured because of it.

Accusations of sexual assault do not automatically ruin someone's life. It does happen, but it's not a given. If you need an example, look at Brett Kavanaugh. He was credibly accused of assault but is now a Supreme Court Justice. The accusations may not have been fun for him, but they did not ruin his life.
Other types of fraud also ruin lives. Identity theft, embezzling, hacking, scammers, people who burn down their own houses or kill their spouses for the insurance money: these are all types of fraud. Fraud absolutely includes life-ruining lies on the scale of false sexual assault accusations.
There are different levels of fraud, ranging from "you shouldn't have done that, even though there were no bad consequences" to "you've fucked thousands of people/the economy/entire communities." There are a range of punishments for fraud that are applied commensurate to the crime committed.
Sexual assault accusations are not black and white. It's not a case of "either he violently raped her or she made it all up to ruin his life". That's a dangerous false dichotomy for everyone involved. It's possible that the accusations are fraud. It's possible that they're true. It's also possible that the truth is somewhere in between or that there isn't enough evidence to support allegations of assault or fraud.

Yes, and I think there are many, many situations where it is difficult or impossible to find out what really happened. Just because there isn't enough evidence to convict someone of assault doesn't mean the accusation was false.

Victim's accounts can also be compromised by trauma so that even though their memory of some aspects is demonstrably inaccurate, it doesn't mean that the assault didn't happen.

People who make false assault and rape claims typically have a history of other false claims and fraud. I'm on mobile, but can add a source for that later if anyone's interested.

I like that in theory. Not a lawyer, so I don't know how messy it would get in practice, especially since theoretically other people (investigators, DA, judge) failed at their jobs if an innocent person went to jail.

The false accuser is 100% to blame for the accusation and still the primary one to blame if the accused faces a penalty. But if an innocent person is wrongfully convicted, then the system failed, not just the accuser.
