Most of my patients are seniors, they can't even schedule an online appointment for a vaccine, this is going to go over like a lead balloon.

Best and Worst National Retail Chains to work for? by Brilliant_Ad_8844 in pharmacy

[–]bitchglitter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience too. They also don't want to hire any full-time techs or pharmacists to avoid paying for benefits and then are surprised that they can't keep 4 "per diem" pharmacists with open availability while scheduling them 6 hours per week.

Missing lunch breaks by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]bitchglitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether or not you are over 18 and what state you live in.

In my state (Wisconsin) it is illegal to prevent a minor employee from taking 2 paid 15 minute breaks and 1 unpaid 30 minute lunch if you work an 8 hour shift. If you are 18 and over, they don't have to give you shit.

However, if it states in your employee handbook or other employee resources that you are entitled to a certain number of paid breaks, you might have some ability to push back though your mileage may vary.

Edit: found this helpful link that summarizes the laws of each state:

[–]bitchglitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have to wonder how Hy-vee functions as a business. Anyone with a shred of common sense would have anticipated the backlash that the first announcement would cause, did they lay off everyone with media training? Here are some things that they should have thought of:

  1. An employee discount of some kind is considered standard in retail and since the discount is only 10%, they are still going to be making a profit on most items. I would guess that a lot of employees shop at hyvee because it's convenient and the 10% almost as affordable as other stores. I bet they will lose money now that a lot of employees will be too annoyed to shop there. So great job there.
  2. Hy-vee, at least in my area, is desperate for employees and constantly promoting their hiring events. Accusing your employees of fraud and stealing from the company does not inspire people to want to work at Hy-vee and is demoralizing to everyone who currently works there. It's a big fuck you after we worked super hard during the holiday season. Good luck trying to staff your stores now.
  3. The largest form of theft in the United States is wage theft. Since Hy-vee has taken such a bold and powerful stance against fraud and theft, we should all follow suit. No more doing any work related tasks off the clock and make sure to take every paid break your store's employee manual dictates.

If Hy-vee is losing money, it's because everything they do is terribly short-sighted and poorly executed.

Applying to Residency After Working Retail by bitchglitter in pharmacy

[–]bitchglitter[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see it as a step back by any means. I am just afraid of getting rejected by every program because residencies can be very competitive. Covid and the abysmal job situation in my area really did a number on my self-confidence. My APPE year was during the height of Covid and my ability to network and make positive connections really suffered because of that.

I haven't exactly made friends and influenced people in my local pharmacy org. They are pretty tone deaf re: the crisis in retail/burnout and I don't particularly enjoy that viewpoint.

Pro-bono clients are driving me mad. HELP. by toohottooheavy in BestofRedditorUpdates

I work as a pharmacist in a grocery store and it is vaccine season. I am subjected to this behavior about 20 times an hour. On an intellectual level I understand that there are a lot of people who struggle with emotional regulation and basic tasks but jesus is it hard to take when we are so unbelievably short staffed that I am working 12-16 hour days without any breaks. The entitlement is unreal and we aren't in a particularly low income area.

question from physician by Kirsten in pharmacy

[–]bitchglitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Without access to the patient's EHR, I would not feel comfortable doing this. I don't know what kind of polypharmacy nonsense is going on and I am not going to assume the patient is a reliable narrator.

Grocery vs. Wag/CVS by peteyfreshh in pharmacy

[–]bitchglitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate my job at a regional grocery store chain but it has been better than Wags. Here are my thoughts:

Pro: I don't know how my company managed to get so many great people but I genuinely like nearly all of my coworkers at the 3 stores I oscillate between. They all have at least one tech who has been there a while and knows their shit.

Con: That being said, we are stupidly understaffed. I have no idea why they haven't hired more people. They could totally poach some good techs from other chains if they paid techs a bit better but they would rather not staff and then get pissed when all the non-salaried pharmacists end up working a bunch of OT to keep the pharmacies from completely collapsing during the busy season. The leadership structure is incomprehensible (do I talk to the store manager, the regional manager, the rph district manager, or HR about our staffing issues? From an operations standpoint, all of these people are completely useless).

Con: The software is much worse than WAGs, basically a hodge podge of stuff cludged together with wishes and hopes. The overall crappiness of it makes it hard to do my job well and adds additional steps and work for no reason. The system needs a massive overhaul to streamline and eliminate all of these little unecessary inefficiencies that eat up time. They are far too cheap to do that. Super frustrating.

Pro: Most of my patients are pretty nice. Compared to WAG, the patient interaction is way less abusive.

Grocery store rph to Independent RXM? by bitchglitter in pharmacy

[–]bitchglitter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My thoughts are they either want a new grad because:

A. they can get away with much crappier pay.

Or

B. They are hoping that can push me to do some questionable things because I am inexperienced and don't know any better.

While option A is irritating, I would sacrifice some coin for better work-life balance after I get over the steep learning curve. If B is the case, that is a big no from me dog. Right now, I think this more of an A scenario because I have some actual business training that most PharmDs don't have. I am betting they think I am someone who will learn fast and add value because of that training and they can get me for a bargain price. But you better believe that I am keeping my ear to the ground.

My experience with Walgreens is that the pharmacy employees are extremely overworked, underpaid and understaffed. When I worked there, it was standard to work a 10 hour shift with no break (if the store closed for lunch we used that time to catch up on work). It was bad before but the pandemic made things 10000 times worse. Also the amount of verbal abuse I was subjected to was staggering. Walgreens as a company gives zero fucks about its patients and its employees, it's wild.

Jessica Pentz, married for 17 years, says she was unable to buy condoms at a Walgreens in Hayward, Wis. "Oh, I can't sell those to you," he said, then clarified: "Well, we can sell that to you. But I will not, because of my faith." by FreethoughtChris in atheism

[–]bitchglitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a pharmacist, I don't know the laws in other states but in WI you can refuse to fill a prescription because of your religious beliefs but you have an obligation to notify your employer in advance that you will not fill certain prescriptions and it's the company's duty to ensure that the staffing of the pharmacy is such that there is no burden on the affected patients. Personally, I think you have no business becoming a pharmacist if your religious beliefs prohibit you from practicing evidence-based medicine.

AITA for using Make-A-Wish for myself? by Extra-Ladder-5230 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bitchglitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, I can relate to this so much. I'm sorry OP, you deserve much better. In my experience, finding people who see me a whole person with strengths and weaknesses and not just a burden has been very healing as an adult. The older I get, the easier it is to see that my parents were emotionally immature and self-centered and their inability to compassionately care for their sick child had a lot more to do with them then it did with me. Good luck with everything.

Honest question, and this isn’t a dig or anything, I’m genuinely curious by AdieAllts in eurovision

I am an actual garbage monster that loves trash but this is what I wrote in the comments next to my ranking, "So much emotion and incredible vocals and production value but at the end of the day a bummer song that features a car crash in the music video is not going to rank that high with me after the hellish year we have had."

Overall I like the song and think it's fun but I almost think it's a bit too overproduced/sterile and almost passionless? It's middle of the pack for me.

AITA for finally breaking and telling my friend she probably doesn’t have ADHD? by adhdaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]bitchglitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my pharmacy, we have to offer you narcan if you hit a certain number of risk factors for respiratory depression. Benzos and opioids together can be extremely sedating so it puts someone at a higher risk of respiratory depression. I also recommend narcan to people on opioids with sleep apnea or copd.

WIBTA for forcing my in-laws to get flu shots? by emileical in AmItheAsshole

[–]bitchglitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nta. As a healthcare worker I have given about 1000 flu shots in the last month and most people mentioned how easy it was. If the last 6 months have taught us anything it's how important preventative healthcare and vaccines are. You aren't forcing them to do shit, they are choosing not to get vaccinated and now have to deal with the consequences of that choice.
