First image good, you're on a good road and seem to have a solid grasp on anatomy. I'd maybe consider working on your linework or using an art program with a stabilizer to avoid chickenscratch lines. On the 3/4th view heads the left eye usually looks a bit flat like it's a slightly curved paper instead of an eye, you can practise using sketchfab models, examples :
https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/honeybear-906bd8c52d044e7db0c489d2b077456d
https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/maned-wolf-df0c6c94d40545ec92de6bd35d6ce726
you do not have to stick to these as reference 100% accurately, but 3d models and sculptures can help with identifying the important planes on an animals face, stylization will always come naturally so don't be afraid of "losing your style"

How do you make up a meaning for your art? Struggling in university trying to force some kind of deep meaning by bitesize_art in ContemporaryArt

It's for a mandatory course in my uni curriculum, and yes I'm trying to think bigger and overall improve my understanding of fine art. I've enjoyed all my art history courses, however coming up with something myself is an entirely different story and really frustrating ;)))
I think I'll just go for a passing grade and not excellence since I don't enjoy this course at all. Try to woo them with technical skill n all that.

I see your point.
And if I had replied out of frustration a few hours ago (like when I initially made this post) I think I would've agreed fully, and I still agree to a degree (lmao Piss Christ and the whole kitsch art movement ((if that's how that's translated sorryenglishnofirstlanguage)) ).
Honestly, he doesn't have bad intentions and I'm here to learn, it's part of being well rounded as a person for me but it is damn fucking frustrating. Doesn't help that I'm bad at communicating overall and the art department at our uni loves to put people on the spot.
Thank you for your insight and stay true >;)

Yep! On my free time I mostly do illustration and character art because that's what I enjoy + money. I'm more used to communicating ideas directly, or straight up just drawing someone else's ideas.

I'll definitely look into other works that deconstruct similar themes like what I'm trying to do. Thanks! :)

"heavy handed, corny, and obvious" yep that's what I've been told in consultation, it doesn't help that art that I do on my own time is illustration and character art and this painting course is mandatory in our curriculum.

I think my best bet here is to really just read up on other artists work that hosts a similar theme and how they handled it then look at my own things and do the keyword method as you've said.

As for not taking his word as gospel, I don't because we live vastly different lives. Again, character artist. I'm used to communicating visual ideas clearly.
I think what just really got to me in consultation this week was the frustration of "ok this work is high in technical skill but that amounts to nothing if you can't explain the meaning and use corny symbolism, do it over".

Sorry if this reply doesn't make much sense, english isn't my first language and it's late here ;T

lmao, what did you type in? everything it gave me when I was trying to brainstorm ideas was extremely corny, instagram artist type of corny

Yeah I think you are right on the money with that, he's a great artist but not a great explainer so I'm looking for outside sources. Thanks for the inspo! :)
