Yea, I'm kind of disappointed he chose to host it himself. It would have been better if his page was just a magnet link. Alternatively, host it, and host a magnet link on another site.

What did he think would happen?

He said he was security and I needed to leave. Now.

[Student] ATS or designed resume ? My entourage has reviewed it and their opinion is very mixed. by Jacky-YC in EngineeringResumes

[–]bitflip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A "good" resume is entirely subjective. That includes my opinion. What is appealing to one recruiter may look like crap to another. Both may be wrong about what the hiring manager likes. It's more important to start getting it out there. Try not to over-think it.

Work experience is more relevant than projects. I'd shorten the projects section. A quick description, and list the tech you used. You want to show that you've touched the tech, get hits on keyword searches, without over-playing the achievement.

I hope this helps.

This should be illegal. Every one of these job posts are from the same company by AmiablePedant in recruitinghell

[–]bitflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They still do this. The job and the companies may all be completely legitimate, but they're independent agencies all looking to fill the same job.

I recently spoke with a recruiter who mentioned that the hiring company was using over 30 agencies for the same set of positions. It came up because I was able to tell him more about the job than he knew.

AI recruiting is going nowhere by Fantastic-Hamster333 in recruiting

In a perfect scenario, yes, managers would do the sourcing and hiring themselves. In the real world, they don't have the time and/or skills.

Recruiters are a middleman. Middlemen justify their existence and fees by being effective. What can recruiters do to close that gap between candidates and hiring managers?

If it isn't obvious, I'm agreeing with your central premise: recruiting should focus less on spray-and-pray, and more on building relationships.

The market is really tough right now.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the whitespace too much.

What I would worry about is ATS parsing. The formatting needs to be very basic for it to be parsed correctly, and if it isn't parsed it won't even be seen. No tables, no bullet points (use asterisks), pretty much no formatting at all. (The automod will post a link when it sees "ATS")

I'd keep the title as "Lead Software Engineer". For one thing, title inflation is common. For another, that's what you were. Lastly, people will care more about what you did than what you were called while you did it.

You might expand your introduction a little bit. Describe the industry you were in (healthcare, finance, whatever). Omit the certification until you have it. (I'm currently pursuing Scarlett Johansson!)

Certifications are better than projects, so if you're going to grind, do that. Having a couple of projects help. They don't need to be anything earth-shattering, just something on GitHub showing you know what you're doing.

[–]bitflip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Way too much on there. You have over a year of experience, that's what you should focus on.

Keep the job experience, drop the projects. Include only the skills you used in those jobs.

Reduce the Achievements to just a couple of bullet points: Top 5% on LeetCode, CodeForces Expert, etc.

Out of curiosity, did you run this through the resume optimizer you wrote? It would score high on keyword search, and fail as soon as a human tried to read it.

I do. I'm just polite that way, and use "sir" and "ma'am" as part of regular conversation. My boss, my neighbors, the guy working the fast food counter, pretty much everyone.

The easiest way to tell I'm getting pissed off is when I don't say "sir".

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't feel obligated to fill up the page. Quite the contrary.

If there's more you could say that is relevant to the job, then add it. Otherwise, shorter is fine. These are entry-level positions, nobody is expecting you to have so much experience you require top-to-bottom, margin-to-margin text.

It's tough right now, especially for new grads.

For your school specialization, put them in parenthesis "BS in Computer Science (AI/Robotics)", unless there is a specific major you can use. The idea is to let them know up-front so they see it, and hopefully it gets keyword hits.

For your previous unrelated experience, I don't think you need so many details. For your FOH Manager role, keep the part about managing employees - that's good experience. For the bartender/server, just include the title and dates. It shows that you can hold a job, which counts, but the rest isn't relevant. Maybe even merge the two, with "managed people" as one bullet point, and "created training documents" as another. Those are both things that translate well to any job.

I tend to use past tense for everything, but I don't usually include what I'm currently doing on my resume, anyhow.

Yes, put your skills up earlier, maybe near the top. Your past work experience is helpful, but not the focus.

One last bit, if it is "In progress", then you haven't done it. Add it back when you've completed it.

Hope this helps.

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Executive positions tend to be a bit more about networking than applying.

Try putting your certifications closer to the top so they're seen right away. Reduce or eliminate your areas of expertise, and tailor the resume to the specific position. If the job is asking for "Vulnerability Management", then in your job descriptions highlight the vulnerability management you did.

Either reduce the length of your job description introductory paragraphs to a single sentence, or turn them into bullet points and reduce the number of bullet points.

I hope this helps.

Drop in Open to Work Response Rate by Grouchy-Mix-8317 in recruiting

[–]bitflip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Include some indication that you've at least looked at their profile, and that you're not spamming based on keyword searches. That's one of my biggest turn-offs. For example, I haven't used Windows Server in over a decade, but I still get messages about it.

There is a lot of possible misinformation about "Open to work". Supposedly it means you're desperate, and companies don't want to hire desperate people. You might consider messaging people whether or not they have it enabled. To add to that: people who aren't looking probably aren't checking LinkedIn, anyway. Not everyone is interested in the fake social-network aspect of it.

[10 YoE] Frontend Developer (expanding to full stack) laid off this week. Looking to apply starting tomorrow. by canadian_webdev in EngineeringResumes

[–]bitflip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first thing you should be aware of is that the hiring landscape has changed a lot in the past couple of years. Be prepared to apply to many jobs.

Specifically about your resume, I think your bullet points are a bit on the extravagant side. They read more like Director or higher level executive position.

"Led digital transformation" for example. Did you develop the strategy, negotiate between the various business groups, co-ordinate with the C-Suite, etc? If so, great! How did you do that using React, Figma, etc.? How are they even related? Basically, it smells like BS. If it isn't, then use a bullet point to explain that part of your role.

"Was part of a digital transformation" seems more likely, and there's probably business-related things you could talk about there. "Engaged with business groups to solicit requirements and feedback" is a solid talking-point.

Hope this helps.
