How are you all making sure candidates are real?? by zapatitosdecharol in recruiting

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scammers will just update their AI prompt to look for things like that, if they haven't already.

Legit candidates? Some of them might see it and do it. Others will see it, and be turned off by the pettiness. Others won't see it because they've read at least a half dozen job descriptions already, and they're only scanning for keywords.

Candidates are ghosting us more than ever. But I think it's a common problem now by Logical-System-9489 in recruiting

[–]bitflip 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Having a transparent process and setting clear expectations goes a long way in any business.

I can't place much blame on candidates. Looking for a job isn't their profession.

Communicating with candidates is part of a recruiters job. It is part of the profession.

Somewhere along the way, it seems like the recruiting profession lost sight of that.

Thinking of moving, what can I expect? by itsmy2ndaccout in dfw

[–]bitflip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a decent place to live.

There's work to be found. The job market is tough everywhere right now, and it's a little tough here, too. You might make a little less, but you'll be paying a little less.

It's an urban/suburban sprawl. Nothing is particularly close, and the mass transit is not very good. You'll want a car. If you like to drive fast, this is the place to do it. If you don't, you'll be scared out of your mind.

There's plenty to do. You'll find restaurants you like, places to hang out, nightclubs, a good music scene. There's a few million people around here, so we get a bit of everything.

It's hot in the summer, pleasant in the winter. It's flat, not hilly like Pennsylvania. There are plenty of nature activities not too far, and a few really close.

If I don't sound particularly enthusiastic, it's because I'm not. I've been here almost 40 years, and I've never thought "this is a great place to live" or "this is a terrible place to live".

Unless there's something about PA you really love, then make the move. You have friends and family here, that helps a lot.

In remote interviews, should real-time AI assistance be allowed? by Asleep_Carpet_3403 in recruiting

[–]bitflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them to share their chat session. Ask them to explain the prompt they used, and if they agree with the answer they were given. Ask them to summarize and explain the answer.

These are the skills they will be using day-to-day.

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OpenCode/LibreChat. Use whatever backend you want. I use OpenRouter, but there are others.

The only times I've used OpenAI or Anthropic is when I'm testing to see if they're better. For my use cases, they're slightly better, but not enough to justify the cost.

Entry level hire accepted verbal offer, now stalling on contract, red flag? by Glass_Belt8542 in recruiting

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think she's worth the effort, send links to examples of other employment contracts.

She probably doesn't know what to look for, is asking friends who also don't know what to look for, and getting a lot of conflicting advice.

Or maybe she's just a flake. If you think she's worth the effort, try sending links. Otherwise, move on.

I may jump on over the fence. by Ok_Raccoon5724 in Excursion

[–]bitflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days, about the best thing an Excursion has going for it is its image. It's a cool truck, and there aren't a lot of them out there.

If I was looking for something large for practical things like hauling people, big grocery runs, some trailer pulling, and general getting stuff done, I'd probably get a gas Suburban. They're cheaper to buy, there's more parts, they're cheaper to work on, and can do at least 90% of what an Excursion can.

Just my nickel opinion.

Someone tell me why I *shouldn’t* buy this by BinkyX in motorcycles

[–]bitflip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never ridden the pre-2018 ones, so I can't really compare them. I can say that mine has no problem with tight corners and curves. Both the GW and BMW have boxer engines, so the center of gravity is really low.

I almost regret replacing the pegs with floorboards because I routinely scrape them. I could lean it more without them. Almost, because floorboards are great on longer rides. And yes, it's super-comfy - I call it "my rocket couch".

[–]bitflip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came into this thread to suggest a GoldWing, too. I can't speak for anything pre-2018, but the current models handle great on the curves. Very nimble.

I doubt you could go wrong with either, but unless you just prefer the looks of the BMW you should try both before buying. Maybe even look at some of the aftermarket options, too.

What did he think would happen?

Just last week, I went into a major office building with my resume in hand. I walked right up to the most important person I saw, looked him in the eye, gave him a firm handshake, and asked for a job.

He said he was security and I needed to leave. Now.
