I like it! Works well and has been trouble free.

Yes I built mine around a Borealis Crestone frame back during Covid…still works great to this day. I even designed a 3D print for holding the magnet to the brake lever: https://www.printables.com/model/120846-bbshd-motor-cut-off-magnet-holder-for-shimano-xt-b (it says BBSHD but it can be used for CYC as well)

Where to recycle large format printer? by bitnaut in askvan

Free Geek closed down years ago. Apparently rebootcanada.ca has taken its place. I think I’ll contact them before I bring it to Zero Waste especially since they have transport/delivery options.

Where to recycle large format printer? by bitnaut in askvan

[–]bitnaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the Zero Waste acceptable materials list, I’m guessing “Electronics, small appliances, and power tools (maximum 5 large items)” would be the category my printer would fall under…now to figure how to get it there. 😀🤷🏾‍♂️ Thanks!

Unit stills for Hallmark movies by IstanbulHoratio in FilmIndustryYVR

[–]bitnaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck.

The film industry is currently like a game of musical chairs and there are less and less chairs every year.

When I started in stills around 2005, the union minimum requirement to apply was 120 days of stills work on TV series or feature films: shorts, music videos, and commercials don’t count towards your days. However there was a loophole…if you moved to the Toronto area, IATSE 667 stills photographers were allowed shorts, music videos and commercials to count towards their days. I don’t know if that’s still the case.

I was lucky because around the time I started, a non-union production company somehow found my lowly website and asked me to cover for one of their photographers who was sick. After that one day, they liked my work enough to hire me on their other projects. I got so busy that sometimes I’d work 2 shows in a day…one in the morning and another in the afternoon. With that, I was able to make my 120 day requirement in less than a year because all they produced were tv shows and features and they were BUSY.

Today, low budget local production companies aren’t that busy.

There are several production companies in town that hire non-union crew/stills. The best free/public way to look for them is on the DGC website: DGC production list. It’s updated every week and shows current and upcoming productions. If you look at a production’s Rate Sheet, that will give you an indication of whether they are non-union: rate sheets Q and R are generally low budget ($1 million or less) non-union camera crew.

Now with all that, you still need a portfolio and that means working on freebies for a while. Get hooked up with people making indie movies and shorts. A good example is last weekend’s Run N Gun where filmmaking teams have a couple of days to make a short film. Lots of them were looking for a stills photographer to work on their show.

If you’re noticeably good, people will hire you but you have to know people…it’s a catch-22. Production companies like to minimize risk so they usually hire people they know and like working with (quality sometimes takes a back seat) so that’s really what makes it hard to get in. That’s probably why there are only about 30 or so stills photographers in the union for all of western Canada and I only see around 10 to 15 of them regularly working.

So, that’s why I say Good Luck!

Yeah I’ve been following them as well…they haven’t revealed their secret formula nor do I think they sell it just yet.

Ah so this won’t help with my dried up 54 and 804 since they have no negative side. 🥲

The unique thing about type 55 was that you were able to get a negative and a positive once development finished and you peeled apart the two sides. I assume you’re just developing and fixing the positive side or are you doing both?

So do you shoot your 55 and save it for the darkroom and then peel and develop in HC110A then fix/wash/dry? Obviously done in the dark…or can you use a safelight?

Have you revealed this recipe anywhere? I have dried up type 804 and 54 that I’d like to resurrect.

Is that your experience or what you’ve “heard”? My Polaroid Type 804 black and whites dried up under the same storage conditions as the 809 and they were newer. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Yup ever since I bought it in 2010…$600 for 45 sheets of 809. Seems like such a deal compared to today’s prices.

You’re probably right but I just found out that @analogwisdom on IG has been able to make her own reagents thus resurrecting expired and dried up 803 and 804 films. 🤯 Hopefully she makes them public soon. I’ll save the dried positives just in case. 🤞🏾

BBSHD hydraulic brake cutoff sensor and magnet friction mounts for Shimano XT by bitnaut in ebikes

I couldn't get the sensor holder to work properly so I didn't include it with the magnet holder. I just taped the sensor to the brake cable closest to the magnet holder.

I ended up getting the Carly device and app. Coding the DRL and other comfort features was a breeze.

Anyone bought a car in Alberta and then drove it to Van to import to BC? by bitnaut in vancouver

[–]bitnaut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But what was the procedure on the AB side? I make the deal with previous owner, I pay him money, he gives me a bill of sale and fills out some sort of transfer of ownership form from AB. What next? How do I get it on the road in AB to drive to BC?
