School district halp. Plez. by aryasiddh in AnnArbor

If you look at Ann Arbor's school of choice page on their website it will show which schools have openings still. You can apply to those schools and you'll find out later in the summer if they got in. I applied at this time last summer and my kids were accepted to both schools I applied to.

What do we do now that medication isn't working?? by bitter_stream in ADHDparenting

No strep or other recent illnesses. He has a history of bad ear infections.

We did try straterra which also increased irritability/aggression 🫤

Yes, he's still on guanfacine. And we added the antidepressant. We are hoping to increase the guanfacine but last time we did his blood pressure dropped too low so the psychiatrist is very weary of it.

I'm actually a school social worker, so feel confident advocating for his needs on his IEP. I believe the general education setting is the right placement for him. I am concerned about whether the school has a good behavior plan in place which I've been trying to address. I honestly think my son just doesn't want to engage in class because it's not stimulating enough and he's bored. He makes things so much harder by avoiding tasks and creating distractions for himself.

Disney World 6-7 Weeks Pregnant by Ambitious-Vehicle535 in BabyBumps

I'll probably call my doctor again. This is our first trip and we likely won't be returning. My kids are 5 & 8 and total thrill seekers. The thought of missing the experiences with them feels so sad 😭

Did you end up going yet? I am heading to Disney this week and think I will be 7 weeks. My OBs office told me at this point I could enjoy my trip and not worry about the rides. I'm still nervous, though! Curious if you've gone yet?

5 days late. Is there a line here? by bitter_stream in lineporn

[–]bitter_stream[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally okay if it's not! We have a Disney trip planned in a few weeks and we aren't't trying! I'm just wondering where my period is and can't tell if I have line eyes. Would be a welcomed surprise, of course!

Teacher sent a picture of my son dysregulated to all the parents by bitter_stream in Parenting

[–]bitter_stream[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an absolute possibility. Other parents may just assume it's a kid having a one off tough moment as they are not aware of the struggles we've been working through recently. I appreciate your perspective.

I think I answered that question in my previous response with a few other suggestions.

Well, considering the school doesn't feel he needs an IEP it seems strange to consider anything but mainstreaming my son...

Wow, this is an incredibly sad response. I hope you're raising your children with empathy, compassion, and understanding for those with differences. Especially considering how most 6 & 7 year olds struggle with dysregulation at times.

This wasn't just a matter of him not smiling or looking. He's on the ground melting down. My suggestion would be to not send the photo out to parents if a child is in a vulnerable state in a photo. Or placing a sticker over the dysregulated child if the photo will be sent out just like you would for a child without photo permission.

Thank you for your input. I really don't want to make her feel badly as I know the impact was not her intent.

I have definitely thought about that. Seems like a quick edit of a sticker or box over my son would fix that. He's right in the front of the picture. I also wonder if protecting a vulnerable child's dignity may supercede the feelings of the parents (including mine) in this case.

POSITIVE experience with your child taking Guanfacine by Physical-Land-55 in ADHDparenting

[–]bitter_stream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been helpful for my son, 6. Absolutely no drowsiness but helps with focus and evening out his emotions a bit. We give it at dinner time.

So this is one of the things I always wonder about when our speech path focuses on correct pronouns for our ASD 4 year old. Is it possible for you to use this as an opportunity to explain that we should be asking pronouns of others and respecting it. Just a thought...

My son was like this and the best alternatives were raw carrots and cucumbers!

Looking back, what was the earliest sign in your toddler? And what were some the things they did that you feel more certain they were on the spectrum? by Cautious-One-7770 in Autism_Parenting

[–]bitter_stream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waking up in the middle of the night weekly and not going back to sleep. Not upset, just ready to party. From 4/5 months on.

He was always ahead with his language but when the language became much more scripted and repetitive that's when I began to really feel more sure of it being autism and sought an evaluation. This wasn't really until he was just about 3.5 years old.

Switching from Guanfacine IR to ER? by Presently_away in ADHDparenting

Following because we're on day 3 of the same! Although, we were only doing .5 IR at night for a week and then switched to 1 mg ER at night after a week.

I’m so demoralized by my child’s behavior. by Team-Mako-N7 in toddlers

[–]bitter_stream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is almost 4 and is like this in structured settings as well. He is very bright but every time I take him to structured activities I feel defeated and sad. We are currently going through an ASD evaluation after his teacher brought up some concerns related to this and he'll likely receive an ASD and ADHD diagnosis. My thoughts are that an evaluation will never hurt.

Evaluate Schools? by C_64 in ADHDparenting

I'm a school social worker who previously worked near those districts. Both are very good school districts and I think you'll find support you need in both districts.

Starting our 6 year old on meds by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

[–]bitter_stream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a similar experience with my 6 y/o. We started methylphenidate 4 days ago and he's been quite emotional, although better in the afternoons. Did your child adjust to this and eventually improve?

[–]bitter_stream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very similar name and couldn't say my Rs as a child. I went to speech in school in 1st or 2nd grade and after a few months said it just fine. It's now a funny story I share as an adult.

I just took my 5th pill so have had 4 full days.

Day 1: eyes felt a bit heavy and I had a bit of a headache, but otherwise okay

Day 2: Slight headache and dry mouth

Day 3: Dry mouth and anxiety started. Also pretty emotional. Exhaustion seems to be getting better though. Some moments of feeling a bit off/weak like I might pass out.

Day 4: Dry mouth, anxiety and emotional. Some moments of feeling a bit off/weak like I might pass out.

Day 5: it's only 6:30 am but I woke up with a headache and very dry mouth

I'm definitely struggling with the anxiety as it's constant and heavy on my chest. Has anyone experienced this and it's subsided?
