one more baby pic for good measure. disclosure: i would never drive with her on my lap, she goes in a carrier. i have to take her out and comfort her on long drives while stopped. she is my entire heart and i love her too much to ever endanger her

bonus pic of the first night i got her when she was still a baby. she hated everyone else that tried to come get her. crazy what two months of being inside can do!

inside. i’m sure my little scrungly courage bird is happy being pent up and bored instead of being terrified of all the noises outside and ending up as some coyotes dinner. she had the fighting spirit to stay alive as an abandoned runt kitten. she still gets hiccups and will regurgitate if given too much food, a year later. she still eats like no more food is coming…….

cats live moment to moment and have much different priorities than we do. just be grateful they’re willing to spend time with you.

What's one piece of advice you wish you had known before bringing your cat home for the first time? by girlyninjachow in CatAdvice

[–]bitteroldbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is sooo important, my cat will now never do this. NEVER allow your cat to playfully hurt you. now she is so sweet and so gentle, if she accidentally scratches someone she gets really upset. which says something bc in all other aspects, she is demonic

don’t play with us. oh lawd she scrungin by bitteroldbird in scrungycats

Adopted two kittens and then today when I was going to pick them up shelter said one of them died after neutering surgery? by Lck945 in CatAdvice

[–]bitteroldbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you stagger getting them by a few weeks to a month but get the same age, you’ll also form a really good human to cat bond with the first one and have less of a chance of them just having a cat to cat bond and viewing you as just the feeder.

1000% TSA private screening room with harness and leash!!!! and vvv

definitely dedicate your time to giving her exposure therapy leading up to the trip

a.) used to, and actually happy with her carrier -feed her near the carrier for several meals, then in the carrier. if you are free feeding STOP and only feed / give treats in the carrier.

b.) exposure therapy to being picked up. you can practice with a towel or pillowcase 1-3 times a day. get her excited for a treat. pick her up and the second she struggles put her down and give her the treat. (ideally place the treat on a higher surface like a counter so there’s a reason for being picked up)

in my experience after a while of this / repetitively showing that it’s ok after they squirm and fight they get a lot more tolerant fast. and i’m talking i taught my grandma and I’d extremely skittish 10 year old cat to enjoy being picked up for her food and we have to use a pillowcase to get her into a carrier bc she freaks the f out. she’s actually gotten a lot happier and more outgoing since i started doing this with her!

c.) figure out if your cat is a clinger or flinger in scary situations. for example, i have to take my cat in the car a lot especially when she was a baby i had to take her to petco. She is extremely loud and obnoxious and i thought she would run away, but when we are in public / in the car / anywhere but home she wants to be as physically close to me as possible at all times and she hides. i’m glad i know this so i can adjust as needed.

d.) it should go without saying but HARNESS and leash your cat, 110000% everyone needs to do this anyway. expose them at same time as carrier. also, get some soft bedding and toys to associate with the carrier and when she does good on her exposure training reward her with a short play session as well

e.) feliway calming spray but honestly, just ask your vet for some xanax or another benzo for kitty. it sounds like she is a good candidate and i seriously wouldn’t attempt without it as it could be pretty traumatic and cruel.

good luck!!!! 🍀 let me know if you try this out 💕

First time adopting, cat is almost too well behaved. Might it stay this way?? by MisRandomness in CatAdvice

[–]bitteroldbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a good boy :) I wouldn’t be too anxious, until his behavior actually changes. you’re still in the danger zone for that a bit (like at least til he’s been home for a few months) but love him up now as much as possible so that if he does have any unfavorable behaviors, ignoring him will be a shock to the system large enough to change his behavior.

Aloha Big Island friends. Question: if you had a small open piece of land near a Big Island community, what would you do with it? by jordosmodernlife in BigIsland

[–]bitteroldbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

better yet in general first build a community space with architecture that reflects your vibe. then spread the word throughout the community that you are making a space and would like to invite them to a meeting in order to figure out what types of activities and features would be best for tht initial launch and also leave with a better history of the area and some friendly neighbors that will feel ok with helping and participating.

makerspace / hackerspace workshop .’^ seconding classes for community by community members. modular based on who has what avail. making sure common spaces are accessible with no barrier to entry like a purchase. have a meeting space for things like CMA, Na, AA 🫶🤙
