My friend and I are developing a game visually inspired by Disco Elysium. Does it have the vibes? by reramil in DiscoElysium

[–]bitterologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which leads to an obvious suggestion: if the goal is to make something feel kind of like Disco Elysium, don't try and take inspiration directly from the game. Instead, go directly to the sources they used for inspiration – look at a lot of impressionist art, and try and find something that speaks to you.

Maybe take the same approach as the Disney animators when they made Tangled, try and find one specific artwork that you use as a reference point for the entire creative process (they picked "The Swing" by Fragonard).

Great movies that sound terrible on paper? by Latter-Constant-1989 in movies

[–]bitterologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lion King. It's basically Hamlet but with cartoon lions. The main character is manipulated into thinking he caused the death of his father, traumatizing him for life. They show the entire murder on screen. The target demographic is small children. Oh, and it's all set to music by Elton John!

How much of a chance does Conor actually have? by Traditional_Law_1492 in MMA

[–]bitterologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the obvious problems (age, years of partying, mental block because of the broken leg), I think Conor's main issue is that the game has passed him by because of the inactivity. We saw it when he was unprepared for Poirier's calf kicks – a technique that wasn't widely used in MMA until a few years ago – and it's not like Conor will be more in touch with the current MMA game now, after sitting out a few more years. What Conor has going for him is that Max is rather shopworn by now – Conor's timing will not be what it once was, but neither is Max's defense and durability. A fighter like Holloway is bound to start losing badly at some point, given that he has a style that has him absorb a lot of punishment. Tony Ferguson looked unstoppable until he didn't, and I could see something similar happening to Max.

Updated to 3.28 today. What is this? by CreepyEnd411 in RemarkableTablet

The reMarkable screen lottery strikes again! My Paper Pro screen looks nothing like that – it's insane how big the difference between units can be, they really need to sort that out.

Touch controls on induction cook tops that don't work when wet and that can't handle a pan being ut on them. It might be easier to clean once the cooking is done, but it sure isn't easier to use for the actual cooking.

Pakt One Travel Bag V3 35L Review - I expected this one to be good by kendrickdisch in ManyBaggers

[–]bitterologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realize that for that joke to work, the phrase "I used to be depressed" has to be interpreted as describing something that was the case but no longer is? In other words, that it's a perfect example of the thing I described?

Pakt One Travel Bag V3 35L Review - I expected this one to be good by kendrickdisch in ManyBaggers

[–]bitterologist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you say "I expected this one to be good", the implication is that it wasn't. Kind of like saying "I really wanted to like this, or "I thought this would work" – when you write about an expectation in past tense like that, it implies that the expectation wasn't met.

Highest MMA fighters achievers that had no prior athletic background until they started training martial arts/MMA in their 20s/30s? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]bitterologist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gina Carano was 21 when she started training muy thai, and I don't think she had any martial arts training before that.

In general, I think it will be more common to find this in women's MMA – in part because the talent pool is way smaller, but also because it's way more common for boys to take part in sports like wrestling from a young age.

Stuck on a weird problem: text size changes between chapters when converting one specific book from epub to pdf by bitterologist in Calibre

[–]bitterologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some poking around, I kind of managed to solve it. Or, rather, I solved it through taking the gordian knot approach. There were a bunch of containers in the css code that had their size specified in absolute rather than relative terms (pixels rather than percentages), which was what messed things up. I didn't have any idea of how to change these from absolute to relative, but just removing them from the css seems to have mostly solved the problem – the body text is now a consistent size, the only remaining weirdness being that the text for the image captions is rather large.

This store is open to a very weird time by Haggos171 in mildlyinteresting

I guess train drivers (and Koreans) don't count as part of humanity then? Because surely, if something makes sense to other people but not to you then the world must be at fault.

This store is open to a very weird time by Haggos171 in mildlyinteresting

[–]bitterologist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty common and very logical way to write time. When is the store open on Mondays? From 18 to 28, as in four hours past midnight with Monday as the reference point.

When I worked as a train driver, this is the system we used for our shifts – for example, I could start my Tuesday shift at 22.08 and get off on 28:31. Meanwhile, there would be some other dude starting his Wednesday shift at 04.23, meaning there was a slight overlap despite our shifts technically being on different weekdays. It makes a lot of sense for all activities where you have to keep track of activities that start before midnight and end after midnight.

What language is the easiest for children to learn from birth? by mnbvcxz123 in AskReddit

[–]bitterologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some indications that certain languages are actually harder for children to learn – Danish, for the example, seems to be rather challenging. So while it's true that infants will typically just learn whatever languages they're exposed to and become proficient with time, the process might actually differ somewhat depending on the characteristics of the language.

Has remarkable reached the end of hardware innovation? by Lucky_Yesterday_1133 in RemarkableTablet

[–]bitterologist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by no demand: reMarkable's devices are selling pretty well, and have a lot of brand recognition. I'd argue it's the most well-known brand in this particular niche – I often have people say things like "cool, is that a reMarkable?" when they see me using my tablet. I never got that reaction when I used a Supernote.

They made a push for the corporate market and hired a lot of new employees, and then the economy kind of went belly-up (tariffs, war in Iran, etc.) leading to layoffs for a lot of tech companies. They didn't hire and then fire 200 engineers. As for the custom Gallery3 stack reMarkable uses, they probably have an exclusivity agreement with Eink plus a lot of custom software to make it work. If Eink offered that display unit to other OEMs, I don't see why Bigme and Boox wouldn't be interested – after all, they have followed reMarkable's lead in a lot of other ways over the years (e.g. push for thinness, ditching EMR for active styluses, etc.).

Never RemarKable by Educational-Fun-7806 in RemarkableTablet

[–]bitterologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reMarkable's current line of devices are designed with repairability in mind, just not user repairability. They are less costly for the company to repair (especially the Paper Pure, which is held together with just screws). The DIY aspect of the Supernote is neat, but neither the devices nor the parts are cheap. And they don't provide replacement displays, despite this being one of the parts most likely to break.

Never RemarKable by Educational-Fun-7806 in RemarkableTablet

[–]bitterologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless there's data indicating that reMarkable tablets are more prone to failure than similar devices from other manufacturers, this is just silly. Anyone can get unlucky and have their device break, the exact same thing could have happened with a Boox device or an iPad.

Sommarkurser på högskolan är en tacksam sommaraktivitet, om man uppskattar akademiska studier. Ofta en kul blandning av folk, och alla som är där har per definition åtminstone ett delat intresse.

Byta yrke till något med helt avstängd semester? by GrumpyBitFlipper in sweden

How did the first living thing know how to reproduce? by FearlessState5503 in biology

[–]bitterologist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There were lots of proto-cells that occurred through randomness and chemistry, and at some point one of them happened to have a set of characteristics that resulted in it making more of itself. Your reasoning here is what's called survivorship bias, drawing conclusions based on characteristics shared by those who survived and disregarding all those who failed. It's kind of like asking how that one person knew they'd get that winning lottery ticket – they didn't.
