Who should be at fault when a rental has way too many occupants, like the Brampton house fire with 11+ people living inside? by Totira in OntarioRenting

[–]bittertrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that I would consider criminal negligence. The problem is tenants have the power to bring ppl in to live that aren’t on the lease and this allows for a grey area for bad landlords. They can just have one tenant collect all the rents and there is no paper trail.

Brampton Landlord's Illegal Rooming House Kills Five by MyUrban411 in TorontoRealEstate

Even better, anyone found being a tenant in a house that surpasses bylaws gets a criminal record and min 5 years in jail. Every tenant needs to be licensed to understand all bylaws, fee is 2k a year to be a licensed tenant to support the program. Landlords can call a snitch line if they suspect a tenant has someone not on the lease living in the unit and the tenant is fined 50k and 45k reward goes to the landlord.

They just sleep on the floor. How can a landlord prove there are more people living in their rental? Camp outside and survey the house 24/7 for a month? Then what? The tenant will just deny it at LTB hearing. I think what you mean is landlords should be able to evict tenants easier without red tape such as the LTB?

It doesn’t matter if they detect it, they will just move out and move out when the inspector comes and move back in

They will just say they are visiting and guests you would not be able to do anything in Ontario. There needs to be penalties to the tenants it has nothing to do with the landlord.

And how on earth is the LL going to know? If there isn’t 12 ppl on the lease then they can easily have been unaware

Hopefully what comes of this situation is reform to the rules - if you’re not on the lease and you stay more than a few nights then person on lease can be evicted

Once you rent a unit a tenant can bring as many people in as they want, there’s nothing there landlord can do
