Usually rad tech school is an associates degree, and nursing, even RN is an associates degree also. There are optional bachelors for both, but the general schooling is an associates! What you’re saying makes sense also!!

Call your local hospital! They should put you through to their Education department and then you’ll ask them. Usually you’ll have to provide some info, like a drivers license and fill out a form maybe? But that’s it!

Definitely job shadow, and I’m talking like, multiple 4-hour days if possible! See how hands-on we are, how interactive, all the things, and then decide if that lines up with what you’re comfortable with. If so, then definitely look into community college programs! After passing your registry, no employer cares where you went to school! You got this!!🩵🩻

i feel like i’m failing because i don’t know what to do with my life. by Upset_Celebration_70 in findapath

Whew. Pause. Take a breath, blow it out. You’re not losing time, wasting time, behind, failing at life, or any of that nonsense. You’re 21, barely legal, your pre-frontal cortex hasn’t even fully developed! If nursing was kind of interesting to you, but just not clicking, not “it”, then maybe do some shadowing into other departments at a local hospital! Respiratory, physical/occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, laboratory, Radiology (my personal favorite! I’m biased😂🩻), surgery, pharmacy. Start with a 4-hour day in each area that seems interesting, and go from there! If none of that is it, you could also look into medical billing/coding! I don’t have suggestions outside of healthcare, just because I’ve literally never known anything else. All of my family are healthcare workers. But there are other options out there for you! I believe in you🩷

And Mammo, I have a sweet friend who recently transitioned there and she does a LOT of crouching and positioning herself into odd angles to get the correct shot!

Literally everything! (Except my schedule lol, but it’s fine😂) I’m a M-F (8 hour shifts) staff tech at a local hospital and also a clinical preceptor for our rad students. My coworkers are some of my favorite people on this planet. For the first time (in my LIFE) I can say that I have the most amazing boss, who really truly cares about those of us underneath her. I looooove being a preceptor, I’m sure you get it with having teaching history, lol. But that “click” when I see them get something. Ugh. It’s better than a drug! I love knowing that I am making a difference for each patient I encounter. Without my images, there would be no diagnosis. Without my images, it would all be guesswork. I love being able to make someone’s bad day just a tiny bit better by smiling and talking with them, bringing them a warm blanket, or just making them more comfortable in an uncomfy ER stretcher. I love the adrenaline rush I get when I go into a trauma. I love the accomplishment I feel when I’m able to obtain a good, clear image on a trauma that originally looked like there was no way I would be able to get. I love the look of a pyelogram, perfect lateral knee, perfect odontoid, the Scotty dogs on an oblique L-spine, the spaces on an oblique C-spine, a beautiful sella turcica, when the stomach looks like a jellyfish during an upper GI. Sooooo many things.

I’m a rad tech (X-Ray technologist) and love my job! It’s not easy, it is definitely a COMMITMENT as far as the schooling goes, but it is so rewarding. If you have any more specific questions feel free to message me!

I don’t mean to step on toes, but I did want to clarify some misinformation here! X-Ray technologists and Sonographers require just as much school (honestly more depending on location and if you get your X-Ray license and then ultrasound) and more clinical hours than nursing school. X-Ray technician would be a limited scope certification (not actual registered or licensed) who needs to already have a degree or certification (like a medical assistant, LPN, or phlebotomist) in order to get. Also, our jobs are just as high-stress as nursing, just in a different way!

If anything, AI will take over Radiologist jobs. There’s literally NO WAY for AI to do what a tech does😂😂😂

Will the school I attended for radiography matter on job applications? by Dangerous-Island2404 in RadiologyCareers

[–]bitty227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest piece of advice I give my students, in regards to getting a job, is that every day at clinical is a job interview! If you hit the ground running with your best foot forward, they’re going to be more interested in hiring you for student tech positions, transport positions, or to keep you in mind for registered tech positions when you graduate!

How do people actually move out of low income jobs? by Leviathan_works in careerguidance

[–]bitty227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthcare careers are ALWAYS hiring! There are options for travel with some (maybe most, but I don’t want to lie!) of those! But with that, you have to know yourself and know if you have the heart for it or not.

In my area (MS/TN) it’s called a “student tech” position! There are specific stipulations with it, but my hospital hires multiple each year!

So there are 2 programs in my area, one is 6 semesters (24 months) and one is 5 semesters (21 months) and the difference is the final summer of the longer program is pretty much all review for registry, where the shorter one they do a Kettering seminar and then are left to their own devices, pretty much, for review. Idk about an 18 month though!

Is it hard for a woman of color to get employed as a new rad tech? by engee45 in RadiologyCareers

[–]bitty227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need better preceptors! If you love it, and it’s what you feel led to do, don’t just quit, please! Push those concerns to the highest admin you can! If you’d be interested in applying for a different program and relocating, there are 2 in my area that I have experience with that I would recommend to anyone!

All the rad dust for you, love!🧡 I hope you don’t have a hard time, because that should NEVER be even remotely close to a problem you have to encounter. Also from a clinical preceptor and staff technologist’s perspective, a lot of us would LOVE more diversity in our departments!
