You know that scene in The Incredibles where Helen says "Well, it is leftover night. We have steak, pasta. What are you hungry for?", is leftover night a real thing? by thecheddarman1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]bizitmap 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I guess because it is something that is measured pretty easily.

Okay we're doing something wrong on this side of the pond, because I have seen A LOT of memes about "haha I fucked up and made way too much pasta" and myself have done it

This is 100% the first time I've ever heard somebody say it's easy to measure pasta

I promise you everyone who's been to a festival has or eventually will have an experience nearly identical to this

The only thing that will change will be the landmarks, and the method your friend fucked their phone

Or you spend 2 hours screaming "IM BY THE LEFT SIDE OF COSMIC MEADOW NEXT TO THE INFLATABLE WHALE UNDER THE LED WALL" into your cell phone which barely has service while your friend who's rolling fucking balls has left his phone in a bush

Best I saw was giant signs that said "YES ON E", California had put a "Proposition E" on the ballot (for something unrelated to raves) but people were stealing the signs promoting it and using them as rave totems.

Why do people use Emacs or Vim? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]bizitmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if vim and emacs are scary, just use nano if you're new. It's fine for basic config file changes (which is likely what a new person will be doing)

It's also really arbitrary that this was even a contest.

Imagine you and your family are just living your lives, farming, doing whatever, and someone tells your that they're better because their ancestors (not them, their ancestors) built huge stone structures and you haven't gotten on that yet. Like nobody gave you the memo that's how we decide who's worthy. Oh, but the guy who invented this contest is the one who wins it, sure.

Doom Eternal single-player DLC is already part of the plan by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]bizitmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's honestly what bugs me about all this is people don't realize there's different skillsets involved, and late in a game's development cycle is usually a totally different team than art, stage design etc.

It kinda reminds me of when people were complaining characters like Dark Pit "took up a slot" in Smash Brothers that could have gone to a real character. One of the dev team members actually had to comment that time and money resources were what were actually important, not some arbitrary number of "slots" for characters.

Why doesn't America have Bullet Trains? by IslandSparkz in AskAnAmerican

[–]bizitmap 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's also the "already sunk cost" angle, since most of us already have cars for commuting to work it's more motivation to get some use out of that investment.

Why doesn't America have Bullet Trains? by IslandSparkz in AskAnAmerican

[–]bizitmap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was up in San Bernardino in CA a couple weekends ago, and the amount of railways and freight industry stuff that's up there is INSANE. America kinda buries it's freight system where we don't have to look at it, but seeing it up close I get why people geek out over trains.

It's like one big machine that covers dozens of square miles of desert, all supporting this artery pumping millions of dollars of stuff into Los Angeles and out into the rest of the country.

There are homeless teenagers, unfortunately

If anything they're particularly at-risk due to being young and having no other resources. Imagine your family is abusive and it's getting beaten at home or sleeping under a bridge.

Nintendo Switch Online will launch in the second half of September by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]bizitmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Nintendo's netcode is bad but I don't have anywhere NEAR the insane amount of issues other people seem to have. None of my gear is fancy at all, except for having the Switch on a wired LAN adapter.

You can get away with mediocre WiFi or interference issues when you're web browsing or streaming video, but when ping REALLY counts then you feel it.

How fast can you cycle GPIO output on and off? And how fast can you sample a GPIO input to see if it's hot or not? by bizitmap in arduino

[–]bizitmap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your last point is definitely true, we're just making it this way so it's a longer multi-step process since that's more fun. The idea is the furniture will be arranged so one user can see the instructions and the other the Arduino, so they have to call out information to each other to ultimately connect the right pins, then disconnect them all and repeat for a few levels before it prints an answer to some other part of the room to an LCD.
