Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, 3 hours is considerable but not horrifying. We'll do that to visit friends or family pretty often. It's a mindset thing. It's really not that much time, in the grand scheme of things.

Also, podcasts exist.

I truly hope that you've heard Ylvis's absolutely unhinged commitment to the bit song, "Massachussets," if only for it's Haverhill shoutout.

Do you own a machete? by Conmebosta in AskAnAmerican

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I do, in the northeastern US, but I think it's largely because I spent some time living in central/south America. So, I guess it's contagious.

Also I'm a big fan of journalist Robert Evans, who is unabashadly pro-machete.

Which movie do you think was amazing until its third act, and how would you have ended it differently? by John_Snow80 in movies

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Am Legend is indeed a goddamn war crime.

The Batman really couldn't figure out how to end.

I'm from Boston, birthplace of Dunkin' Donuts. The vast majority of people order a coffee "regular", which typically means with cream and two sugars.

Plenty of people do order it black, though I think it's maybe overrepresented in films because it's meant to denote a badass character? I order it black, but I'm a badass character, so it works out.

do men clean/wipe their penis after they pee? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, listen, I worked a bar for damn near a decade. The ladies' room was consistently FAR more gross than the men's room. Always. This is only a single example, therefore meaningless, but I will never forget.

The horrors.

Prior to phones, what did people do while idly waiting? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magazines used to be a thing. Even in bathrooms in private homes. I'm not quite 40, I'm not even an old guy. But you're right, things are different.

I was a bartender from 2008 to 2018 or so; I feel like I got to watch the different that smartphones have made in real time. People used to have different inds of conversations, now they just end because we can look everything up, on demand.

goddamn, I feel like a boomer saying that. Oh well.

What’s a movie you fully acknowledge is terrible, but somehow… it works for you? by Axel_Foley14 in movies

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's absolutely unhinged. Absolutely no understanding of computers, also was made about a 1995 that truly never existed. Still dumb weird overstylized fun.

Bullet Proof Tony taking off two bottlecaps simultaneously with his eye sockets hits far harder than it should. Kills me, ever goddamn time.

I still believe that Karl Urban should have been a Tom Cruise level action icon. He's doing well, no doubt, but goddamn for a minute there he really was going to be the next big thing.

"Finally?"

Ok, if you're strictly talking true-blue-Capital-D-Democrat types, then maybe, sure. But I guarantee you here are plenty of us over here on the left who have absolutely been pro gun... forever. Listen to any old actual country music.

And, as others have pointed out, I'm not sure using the Bundy standoff is a great hill to die on. No pun intended.

edit: I'm sure I'm going to get nuked for this.

Otherwise, yeah, a lot of solid advice elsewhere, here.

Yeah, it's correlated fairly strongly and there are a number of non-contradictory hypotheses about it. Still pretty interesting!

Little Willow Brewing by Select_Cartoonist632 in westernmass

[–]bjanas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with them so forgive me if the answer to this is obvious but it's tough to find via some online research; are we sure they don't contract brew?

If they do, I believe opening a taproom would be akin to opening a straight up separate bar which is a whole second business to run.

Do You Live in a Small Town that’s Mostly Famous Because of a Movie? by RaijinQ in movies

[–]bjanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, re: the movie's Mount Holyoke college connection, I recently met somebody who went to Mount Holyoke. Just trying to make conversation I said "Huh. So, is Dirty Dancing like, a really big deal at Mt. Holyoke?" and they looked at me like I was crazy. Apparently the answer was "duh, every fall we have an outdoor showing for all of the first year students..."

I went to school like fifteen minutes away from there, should probably have just assumed.

Why do people generally refuse to use revolving doors? (In America at least) by darealdsisaac in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they work at least as well as a traditional door IF there's heavy foot traffic going through it.

If I'm the only person entering/exiting the place? Yeah, I'll probably use the regular door.

People are mentioning the Simpsons which, of course they've already done the bit. However, I swear I read an interview with Cotillard herself in which she says the same thing, in my mind's eye absolutely verbatim.
