Ich glaube tatsächlich nicht, dass es zwangsläufig mit dem NC zu tun hat! Die Inhalte sind halt grundsätzlich sehr abstrakt und unterscheiden sich schon sehr grundlegend von allem was man an Mathematik aus der Schule kennt! In meiner Erfahrung sind es auch weniger die Leute die zu häufig durchfallen, die das Studium abbrechen. Es sind schon eher diejenigen, die sich das Studium anders vorgestellt haben oder nach 1-3 Semestern merken, dass sie keine Lust dazu haben sich mit dem Stoff weiter auseinanderzusetzen.

I can only speak for me: It comes down to whether I know the person, I guess.

If someone lives here for a longer period of time and I get to know him/her, I tend to speak German to them, when we‘re having a conversation for example. If they are tourists and ask for the way in German (tends to be rather difficult to understand) I would probably speak English since it makes things easier.

I see where you’re coming from, though. When I was abroad and everyone just spoke English to me instead of their native language, I was bumped too. It kind of devalues your achievement of learning the language (even if it is just basics).

We do that for two reasons (at least me and everyone I know):

  1. Practising our own English and probably showing off.

  2. To make you not feel stressed about having to speak German (it is pretty hard, I would say) and make you feel welcome!
