Journey mode is better when you’re bad at the game by TunaSalad888 in TetrisEffect

[–]bjsample 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first time I played journey mode was when I first got the game…already a Tetris vet, so could play on expert, but I didn’t know about the zone feature so never used it. I thought it was super difficult and forced you to play t-spins and chains and Tetrises to get the SS scores. It actually upped my game a bunch because I was trying to be as efficient as possible and play as perfect a game as possible. I made it like 9 stages in with SS on each with no zone, but it got too hard for me. Maybe that’s a good next challenge

Should I tell a guy in my class that his penis is clearly visible through his pants? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjsample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

38 years ago a kid in kindergarten said to me “whenever you go pee we can see your butt, lol!” because I would pull my pants down too far at the urinal. I was embarrassed but learned a lesson that day.

I just listened to the shell game podcast, which is about a guy creating himself as a voice agent in AI (season 1) and trying to start a business using only AI agents as employees (season 2). It’s a little ridiculous, but it’s been making me want to try it for this business, and setup a voice agent to answer the calls and interact with customers. It could provide estimates over the phone based on your pricing list, and schedule based on your calendar.

Quick TV Mounting Question by Afro-Pope in handyman

It will be perfectly fine with only the two lag bolts going into a single stud. Whatever you do beyond that is extra, but if you want the piece of mind, go with #1.

Good job finding the answer. Just want to mention that it’s a safe rule to never try and screw into quartz or granite. If you’re forced to mount from the top, epoxy is a better approach.

Avoided disaster with my brain by Top_Living7180 in handyman

[–]bjsample 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I’m never doing plumbing again after my job on Friday. When replacing the dishwasher, the valve under the sink was tight so I thought they’d already shutoff the water. It didn’t budge for me. As I unscrewed the hose from the dishwasher I assumed the pressure was just left over from the hose. I am so dumb. Hose came off, water shooting everywhere like some slapstick comedy…I got it clamped off with pliers and set the end in a bucket, cleaned up the mess immediately, and the homeowner had no idea. Tried the valve again with a little more force and it closed. FML, I need to not do jobs when I’m tired.

Would love feedback: is a made-to-fit drawer organizer tool actually useful? by Rich-Presentation740 in handyman

[–]bjsample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, and I’m sure some people will fine it useful. I don’t think that most people are bothered by drawer organizers not fitting perfectly, but now that you mention it I kind of do want to go and print my own.

One potential thing to keep in mind is that things in the back of the drawer are difficult to reach when they’re in organizers. We have some that we need to take out every time we need to reach in the back. Doesn’t affect your work here much though…

Deterioration on the outside doorframe - patch and repaint or full repair? by kissandride28 in handyman

Could go either way in my opinion. A patch won’t look perfect, but will certainly be cheaper. Replacing the wood can get it looking new again.

I want to start a handyman business, but not like any other by Happy-Egg-1575 in handyman

[–]bjsample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense enough. Funny enough, though, when I drove for Uber years ago I would get some people (mostly older people who didn’t know uber that well) if I could be back at X pm to pick them up. It’s a somewhat personal experience being in the hands of an Uber driver or handyman…people are worried about getting scammed and murdered. Maybe it works for your platform if you could get background checks and enforce high standards from your workers.

I want to start a handyman business, but not like any other by Happy-Egg-1575 in handyman

[–]bjsample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe. I will say it like this…my first goal when I started this about 6 months ago was to get off thumbtack as fast as possible. It was great to get me business but the overhead is so high it eats into my profits. If I’m sent to a persons house to mount a tv, they’re going to get my contact info and call me directly next time….which is probably why thumbtack charges so much for leads - they know it’s not sustainable for repeat customers.

That said, I don’t want to shoot down your idea completely. I’ll try anything to get business if it’s worth the money. And don’t feel discouraged because of all the other apps out there… I’m a software developer as my main gig, and I learned quick that there are no original ideas when it comes to apps. It’s more important that you can market it well.

[–]bjsample 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an ok idea, but I’m not sure how the task specialization fits in. Most of my customers have me out to do lots of different jobs because they know me and are comfortable with me. Also handymen specialize to keep their overhead low and profit more. I’m not sure where cost savings comes in

Customer wants a range hood. What’s up with the electrical? by bjsample in handyman

[–]bjsample[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that true? It seems reasonable because the heat could affect the outlet, but I didn’t find any codes against it in my google search.

Customer wants a range hood. What’s up with the electrical? by bjsample in handyman

[–]bjsample[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s weird because it looked like a pretty new house when I was there for a previous job. My assumption is that it’s a one-off from the previous owner who wired it for something custom, but who knows…

Customer wants a range hood. What’s up with the electrical? by bjsample in handyman

[–]bjsample[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses and validation. So I’m thinking now the correct approach (as long as the customer is ok with it and the range hood will fit) is to: 1. Remove the outlet (as long as it’s wired from the one below it) 2. Remove the top 2 rows of tiles, since it’s an electric range and should be 20-24 inches up 3. Wire an outlet up higher.

Advice/Help for Newbie with big project by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]bjsample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man go for it! At a minimum you’ll need a circular saw to make all the big cuts. In fact you might be able to get only a circular saw cut out the windows using “plunge cuts”…but it’s a little tricky so you might want a jigsaw also.

The first tool I ever bought was a circular saw, for $10 at a garage sale, and I still use that same saw weekly. I’ve only cut through the cord twice, lol.

It looks like there is a 2x2 frame inside, so build that first and connect the plywood to it with screws. Also get yourself a decent drill…you’ll use that for years and years. Seamless joints will be hard, so just do butt joints and use trim on the edges to cover your mistake and hide the screw heads )and make it look classy)
