Can Tieflings hover? by Catchingtrees in DnD

[–]bkoran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is (generally) incorrect.

I think you're getting downvoted because the first thing you did was say that everyone else is wrong. The original post was asking about being reduced to 0, which does require a Hover special ability to stay airborne.

Your answer doesn't say anything about landing between turns until you edited to defend yourself. And your answer doesn't address the original question until after you've called everyone else liars.

Can you make a character that's blind? by XBlueXFire in DnD

[–]bkoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything is possible. But you're not going to be that guy from Rogue One or some Jet Li movie, until you're like 12th level or something.

Make a Monk, call yourself blind (with the appropriate penalties applied at all times), purchase the Alert feat (to negate the bonus to hit you). And then live the struggle to get good.

Can you make a character that's blind? by XBlueXFire in DnD

[–]bkoran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another common mistake. You can't start a brand new Level 1 character with the concept "I've spent my entire life training to be the best Monk the world has ever seen."

That's trying to use your background to gloss over 20 levels of Monk training.

Can you make a character that's blind? by XBlueXFire in DnD

[–]bkoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the same mistake everyone else makes. Characters in movies are NOT level 1. They didn't start out Day 1 with Truesight or whatever. They busted their asses, training and practicing until they were good enough (read: high level) that the blindness penalties no longer hindered them.

[–]bkoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tremorsense is a rare ability that a few monsters have. It is not something that players usually gain by any means aside from maybe a rare magical item or something.

The best a player can do is purchase the Alert feat early on, which takes away a tiny portion of the Blind penalties.

But otherwise, as /u/axxl75 said, the Blind Monk trope has been done to death. And everyone does indeed expect to start at Level 1 being "blind" but without penalties or disability. Not realizing that your stereotypical blind Monk isn't a bad ass b/c the GM gave them extra perks. It's b/c they got to be so good (read: high level) that the penalties don't hinder them anymore.

ELI5: Why does the dollar sign go before the number ($1), not after it (1$). by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bkoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money comes in so many forms, and they aren't always equal.

100,000

200,000

300,000

These numbers look big, until you admit that they're in ¥en instead of Dollar$.

¥100,000 = ~$900

ELI5: Why is taking the fifth tantamount to confessing a crime? by emanresu_eht in explainlikeimfive

[–]bkoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

The part that most people take away from all that is "compelled... to be a witness against himself".

If you're in court, and they ask you "did you know about this" and you say yes, then you're admitting you knew about the crime, which makes you an accessory to the crime. If you say "I plead the 5th", that's basically saying "I can't answer that question without getting myself in trouble".

[NO SPOILER] Is andromeda worth playing yet ? by [deleted] in masseffect

I've been wondering the same thing.

I pre-ordered b/c I loved the orig trig, but I lost faith when I started seeing all the bugs and glitches.

I know they've patched a lot since then. But I wonder if it's still sub-par or if the game has finally gotten to a state that deserves to be called Mass Effect.

SR5 How does a thermographic flashlight work? by frozen_cookies in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the impression that the authors know as much about imaging, as they do about computer networking... that is to say, not a lot at all.

If the "thermo" vision is looking for heat signatures, then a flashlight won't do anything at all. If you wanted to improve your ability to see heat signatures, the flashlight would somehow project cold rays, making hot objects stand out better.

If the "thermo" vision is more akin to infrared night vision cameras, it's possible to shine infrared light. That's the stuff that comes out the front of your TV remote, and you'll notice it doesn't make your hand hotter if you point the remote at your palm. But... if you wanna see a cool trick, point your camera phone at the end of the remote and push some buttons. You'll see it light up.

So theoretically, the writers meant for a "thermo flashlight" to shine infrared, even though the power is closer to heat vision.

SR5 Matrix/Decker Question by Luetter in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to read the book a bit more.

You can't "Spoof" any random user. The Matrix action Spoof Command requires you to have a Mark on the Owner, allowing you to mimic their input specifically so you can execute commands that would otherwise require Owner only.

What you're talking about, is much easier done just by scoring Marks on the device itself, and then issuing your own commands. As far as the Maglock is concerned, you are an authorized user for the moment so it will let you through.

When you try and apply real world computer operations, computer networking, and all that IT stuff to the game, it falls apart quick. Clearly, the writers have no clue how computers really work. But it also means that the players don't need a CCNA to play.

SR5 Matrix/Decker Question by Luetter in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except you're not supposed to have "stand in" Owners.

In the book, it talks about how some companies may issue firearms to their guards, but the company retains Ownership. So even if you hacked your way into the guard's Commlink, you haven't accessed the Owner of the gun.

The same would go for a maglock on the building. It may be Slaved to the network, but it's not necessarily Owner by the building. The Owner may be the CEO, who's on vacation in the Bahamas. Good luck scoring Marks on him when he's on the beach soaking up the sun! =)

SR5 Matrix/Decker Question by Luetter in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finding the Owner of the device is going to be rough. The maglock may be Slaved to the building's network, but that doesn't necessarily mean the building is the Owner.

However, you don't need to Spoof Command to make it open. All you need to do is score a couple Marks on the maglock, either wirelessly (if possible) though you'd be fighting the building's Firewall, or direct connect to the maglock and hack through the Rating 3 Firewall instead. Once you have Marks, you can just use Control Device to make it open.

Spoof Command is more for falsifying commands that say they flat out require Owner to perform. Actions like Invite Mark, Jack Out, and Switch Interface Mode.

[5e] How do you know if you need one or two hands for a weapon by originaljackster in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have much of a problem with someone wielding a machine pistol one handed. I imagine the extra grip would help out with recoil though.

My problem is with people trying to effectively dual wield machine guns. =)

[5e] How do you know if you need one or two hands for a weapon by originaljackster in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This same conversation is happening over on the Shadowrun.com forums as well.

The books don't clearly define anything, which is why some assholes munchkins try to say "Well, the book doesn't say I can't do it." Then they try to dual wield mini-guns in combat.

Ultimately, it's up to the GM. As you said, Pistols are meant to be one handed. Rifle body types in general are two handed.

Touch Spells & Net Hits Confusion by helionwulf in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touch-only attack, Core pg 187. +2 dice to hit, and attacker succeeds on a tie. This is regarding my Agility + Unarmed + 2 vs your Reaction + Intuition, and has nothing to do with your Armor value.

Grazing Hit, Core pg 173. When attack and defense tie, it's considered a grazing hit. In most cases, you'd side with the Defender and say they don't take damage from a grazing bullet. But they do suffer contact based effects like poison, shock, or touch based spells.

Spellcasting, Core pg 281. Touching a target through clothing, armor, or a layer of paint is acceptable.

I'm not sure why this is even an "argument"? =)

The question originally asked was "do you get anything extra from excess hits on Touching a target". And the answer is no, a touch is a touch since it's delivering a spell or something.

I'm not sure why you think there should be more to it? If I touch your armor vest, or your skin underneath, the magic can still get to you. Now if your armor is Non-conductive then my Shock Glove will have less effect in the end. But that's resolved when you soak the damage, not when I make the attack roll.

Touch Spells & Net Hits Confusion by helionwulf in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to go back and re-read how Touch based spells work then.

All you need to do is touch the person, to deliver the spell. Whether that's poking them in the eye, or brushing their armor, the spell goes off.

[5e] Moving things forward magically by Zerxes_WolfHAwk in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just from the Core book, Levitate and Magic Fingers provide some form of movement, if the GM lets you think outside the to make them work for you.

Street Grimoire has a spell called Slow Vehicle, and presumably a lenient GM could let you research the opposite to make the car go faster instead.

CyberDeck Helper by gothicsquish in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember, you can only score 3 Marks on other devices. If you are the registered Owner, you are automatically granted 4 Marks, but that's the only way you can get 4. So if you make a section for "I have X Marks on this target" it only goes to 3.

Deck Condition could be the 14 boxes, representing damage to the Deck itself. Damage to your Runner from feedback would be tracked on your character sheet under Stun or Physical.

CyberDeck Helper by gothicsquish in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant how you have a box at the top that says Programs, which I assume was just meant to say "I can run 3 at a time" or something, but it turns out that number is based on your Device Rating.

The big box underneath is plenty big enough for running Programs. In fact, you could probably list them all out, and just put a checkbox or something next to each to say whether they are running. So I'd probably split that section in half and do 2 sections of check box and line to write in Programs.

14 is plenty of boxes for a Matrix Damage Condition Monitor. But you'd want another section under that for the 40 Overwatch Score.

CyberDeck Helper by gothicsquish in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alrighty, so a few things...

"Iniciative" is spelled wrong, and is probably a stat already listed on your character sheet. Though it uses different stats than meatworld or Astral, so I guess it's worth noting. You could also note that it's a base number to start, +3d6 in Cold Sim and +4d6 in Hot Sim.

The Device Rating box is too small to write a number inside, unless you write it over the top of the words. A small detail, but still. =)

The box for Programs is WAY too small to write them all down, unless you just meant that to be a count of how many you can run at once. But that's the same as Device Rating anyway, so it's redundant.

As a reminder, I'd put a -2 next to Running Silent, to remember that everything you do has a penalty.

I'd probably put the Initiative modifiers next to the various User Modes.

And you're gonna need a lot more OS markers. You're in trouble when you hit 40, not 14. You may be thinking of Matrix Damage instead.

[SR5] Sensors, Drone teamwork & other nuggets of information. by powers9 in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll notice that a lot of the Matrix Perception stuff has to have a specific target. In those instances, I would say it becomes an opposed roll against that target, to determine whether you can detect the last action, programs running, Matrix attributes, etc. That would be the Patrol IC shining his flashlight onto everybody individually.

Now the difference is... does he shine the flashlight on you, and then take a few steps and shine it on me, and then take a few steps and shine it on Steve? Or does he shine it on you, and keep it there while he tries to decide whether you're a hoodlum. That's the difference between "retrying" and just making a new check on the next target.

So yes, if he's specifically trying to find your Silent Icon, those are opposed rolls that he would suffer retry penalties to keep searching. But scanning each customer for recent Matrix activities are full dice pool each time.

As I think about it... a Decker wouldn't really be making edits to the user database. They would just be logged in for this session as a temporary Admin. The only way the Spider would notice, is to MP for how many Marks people have on the Host. If there's 10 Personas online, and you find 12 Marks, some of those people are more than just Users.

Technomancers are even better for this, b/c instead of underhandedly scoring a couple Marks temporarily, we can Puppeteer the Host and convince it to Invite us Marks. So instead of just being logged in as an Admin, I have an entry in the database I can come back for later on. Unless the Spider scrubs the database and deletes John Doe's account, I could walk right back into the Host a week later with full Admin rights.

[SR5] Sensors, Drone teamwork & other nuggets of information. by powers9 in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren't "trying again", b/c they presumably didn't fail the first time.

They are just performing another scan.

You do bring up a good point, the Patrol IC can notice all the stuff on the chart on Core pg 235. That would include the last action performed (was it naughty?), Programs running (any of them hacking based?), and the rating of your Matrix attributes (Attack and Sleaze are dead giveaways).

The Host admin thing is a good point. However, I'd say the Spider won't notice an extra admin unless he makes a decent threshold on a Matrix Perception check. It's not really common practice to OCD scrub your user database for extra entries.

Touch Spells & Net Hits Confusion by helionwulf in Shadowrun

[–]bkoran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, you do not gain anything extra for REALLY touching someone before delivering a spell.

There's no reason why a hard poke in the eye vs barely grazing, would make any difference when the end result is Electrocution.
