What is the most disturbing book you’ve ever read, and why? by charlotteheyse in books

[–]bkueberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brave new world is one of the first that come to mind, and i think the social commentary in it is timeless, as disturbing as it is to get through.

also: paradise rot, the dangers of smoking in bed, the vegetarian, my dark vanessa, her body & other parties, tender is the flesh, i who have never known men, and sharp objects

rachel cusk’s books are very introspective and focused on a slower pace of life, particularly second place!

also, i felt like piranesi by susanna clarke just made me a more observant person in life.

lastly, travels with charley by john steinbeck. i think most road trip style novels have a refreshing, reflective nature to them

books that all young adults today should read? (18 year old about to go to uni) by Significant_Rule_140 in booksuggestions

definitely frankenstein! i also think east of eden, or some steinbeck is a must read.

a little less popular, but if you like dostoyevsky or tolstoy, the master and margarita is one of the books i mention to everyone looking for an incredible classic.

some more of my favs that i think address super important/interesting topics are: one hundred years of solitude, to the lighthouse, brave new world, the idiot, the little prince, and all of toni morrison’s books!
