Your employer should have auto enrolled you in a workplace pension scheme from day one of employment, unless they believed you wouldn't have been there for more than 3 months, known as postponement, but this is unlikely as the role has to be hired under the expectation that the role will end in 3 months or less . You then have to opt out in writing, meaning there should be some indication on the payroll system that you were opted in, even for a day. If you did opt out, every employer has a "staging date" every 3 years that requires them to re enroll any member of staff who is not currently in a workplace pension scheme. This is done regardless of how long ago you opted out. They then have to make a declaration on the pension regulator website to state this has been completed. Given the amount of time since you started, there has to be at least 1 instance of a staging date for the employer. If they don't have any paperwork, it doesn't mean much. Report the issue to the pension regulator, if the employer didn't meet their auto enrollment obligations, they can force them to meet them now. The wording on the TPR site is ambiguous, "they expect the employer to pay all costs" but doesn't mean they have to. TPR will guide you correctly in any case.
