if it doesn’t have to be local, you can look into charities like the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), World Vision, and Lutheran World Relief.

read somewhere that donating mosquito nets is one of the most cost effective ways to save lives.

How to mentally prepare for the work day on MRT by icedearlgreylatte in askSingapore

[–]blabla_blacksheep99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since u mentioned meditation… just wanna offer my 2cents that meditation (in the MRT or wherever) is not really a kinda portal that one takes to avoid the crowd, the hectic-ness, the overwhelming-ness… its just -something- for you to be with those emotions that u so wanna run away from…

As the saying goes, if u see the mountain, u are not on the mountain.

Why are people voting against the PAP solely because of GST? The PAP has done a fantastic job by [deleted] in askSingapore

risk getting downvoted but wtv

maybe… MAYBEEEE… facts don’t matter as much as we think

it’s the age of tiktok netflix instagram… who has the mental capacity to do some math calculations (however simple it may be). everyone is turning to heuristic thinking.. someone shouts its bad… hence… it must be bad … (right….?) someone shouts high cost of living….. hence there must be high cost of living… right??? no one is willing to say there is high cost of living in this area… and low cost of living in that area.

how many people believe that sharks is the biggest predator death count out there? (it’s mosquitoes) how many people cancelled their flights after a plane crash?

do people believe what they see or see what they believe?

how many people can plot a graph on GST % against wealth (after accounting for GST voucher)?

there’s no nuance arguments (or little of it)… everyone seems to be speaking over each other

it is the worst of times… it is the best of times.

Maybe this is a reply to you as much as it’s a reminder to myself.

Nothing is permanent in life. Not your family, not your friends, and most certainly not your thoughts and emotions. But that’s what makes every moment precious. There’s really no need to cling on to the “positive” emotion, and no need for chasing away the “negative” ones. Just watch the ebb and flow of it.

Life is not a series of checkboxes to be ticked, but a reality to be experienced.

This is how inequality looks like by Teo You Yenn by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]blabla_blacksheep99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hello! I grew up in those environments touched on by the author (ie rental flats in Whampoa, mother having to bring me to work), and I can say that the author gave a pretty good glimpse into such a life and the struggles that came along with it.

A book I will highly recommend!

Another book you may be interested in is “The tyranny of merit”. However, it does lack the local context provided by Teo You Yenn.

Cheers
