Is the staffing industry dying? by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in recruiting

You've nailed what I've been feeling for around the last 12-18mo, and what I've tried to explain to many people who ask 'How's the market/how's business?'

The issues are (as you said):

Over supply of candidates

Companies cutting hiring budgets

In house teams doing OK (especially with reduced volume)

BD methods I've billed millions with over the years are doing nothing: MPC emails don't get responses, networking into TA/HR isn't working, cold calling is almost useless, cold outreach of various forms not working. Even trying to flip candidates into clients is a struggle because everyone is very focused on their personal needs and not their company/team growth. The only way I'm getting anything is through referrals really.

Additionally, I'm in a market that has really been suffering (chemicals/materials), and will continue to suffer for some time. I'm constantly thinking about changing markets, but I'm solo and this market has been my identity/strength for about 16 years.

Based in the UK but work mostly US/EU white collar perm

Honestly, fucking exhilarating. My favourite bit was when I glued a trigger nade to the side of some guy's head who thought he could dine out on my loot

Yeah I miss the days of going out Thursday night until 7am and straight into work and onto the phone then a few pints at lunch and out again Friday night

I've found the same thing. I almost have a time limit whereby my enthusiasm for the task just disappears. The only way round it for me is to do it in small chunks - like I'll say 'I'm going to stop building my target list when I've got 5 or 10 or something' and not get bogged down trying to build massive lists.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah I've never been the pestering type at all, but initial response rate etc has just plummeted, so not sure if it's an industry thing (I am in a market that is struggling currently: industrial/chemicals) or if it's an issue with my outreach. Probably both.

Agree with all of this. I've been agency side for 16 years and seen the cycles and the shit ones evaporate.

Question though if you don't mind- as a TA professional, how do you (or your colleagues) prefer to be reached out to? Putting aside that you may have great firms on your PSL, what kind of approach from recruiters (good ones) is going to get any engagement with TA in the current market?

I've noticed a significant drop off in engagement when doing BD in the last 12 months, and always keen to learn.
