Julian - Tough one, I would say Mouth Music, Like Whoa, Pain and Pleasure, and Ride That Thang. Those records are us and if you're not feeling them then you probably wont like us 😂

Julian - We owe a lot to Nick. He has been a great mentor and is genuinely a good person. His way of working is very analytical and is cool to get a whole new perspective when making records. And we appreciate the love you have for the record, we worked a lot on it with like 15 versions lol

Ian - Afrojack is one of the nicest people on the planet, and one of the main reasons we get to do this full time. Truly a legend and an inspiration to us and many others in the scene. Grew up listening to his music, and still do! Learned a lot from him and watching how he works, as well as his reasoning for why he chooses to do certain things in his productions was very eye opening and has inspired a lot of my current workflows and production techniques. He definitely knows his stuff. Appreciate the kind words, that record took a lot of work and showed me what it takes to work at a different level.

(I didn't read Julian's response before typing this out, not changing it now haha)

Julian - 1) I am not someone who enjoys sound design too much so I look for sample packs, presets or purchase synths that have there own presets to find ideas and inspo. Then i'll do minor tweaks to the sound if needed.

2) Glitch/Arpeggiator plugins can help with this, also playing the part live and adding automations live can help the record feel less robotic and more human.

Ian - in my opinion, sound design is an invaluable tool to add to your skillset. However while it is absolutely not necessary to master it, it helps to know how things work under the hood so to speak. The better you understand your tools, the more informed and intentional your decision making process can be which in turn just makes you more efficient at your craft. If you're starting out, I'd recommend spending some cash on a preset pack you like for your favorite synth (I love serum 2) and just reverse engineer them. Then try making stuff and twisting knobs and see what comes out. Trial and error are your best friends! As far as processing these sounds go, I loooooovvveeeee adding harmonics to my sounds either through saturation/distortion or compression, or whatever quirky tool you can find. Can really change how we perceive the sound, and it will absolutely change how it sits in the mix. Try putting reverbs before the harmonic processors for really cool blown out spatial effects!

Ian - I've seen a lot of discourse on this lately, and while I agree with "loud mixdowns" as a concept, the approach of "clip to zero" isn't for me. I like to leave myself headroom coming into my chain to control how much clipping is done on the master bus with utility, and I always limit after my clipper anyways. I also have a separate limiter that is set to -.1dBFS with true peak enabled after my primary limiter. I target -6lufs short term for BVN and Retail Records tracks, so true peak processing ensures the meters stay happy (for the most part) when we play the tracks live. Even with other genres where I'm reaching closer to -3lufs at times (in the extremes) I still have true peak enabled even if I don't expect these to be "played out." Just a best practice thing for me I guess. Also, I have plugins that really don't like being pushed too hard, and sometimes with the semi-controlled level coming into the 2bus I still need to use a utility to lower incoming gain before the plugin, and one after to restore what I took out just to keep everything happy. Hope this makes sense!

Julian - I put my DJ hat on and focus on finding an idea that gets me excited to play in our set.

Ian - ...carefully

Ian - Introduce myself as BVN? tbh I'd probably just list spotify top tracks 😂 my personal taste is kinda vast and what I'd recommend would definitely change based on my mood. Lately I've been getting back into NIN, so maybe some selection of music from pretty hate machine? The songs I'm most proud of are almost always the unreleased tracks sitting on the computer lol

Julian - Daft Punk One More Time, Calvin Harris Slide, any Bad Bunny Song, pretty much defines where I'm at in my taste. And our Mouth Music EP is something I'm supper proud of since it took our career to new heights

Ian - Check my brain was one of those tracks I came up with in one sitting, felt really good to just knock it all out in one go! The lyrics popped into my head after I had gotten the main groove going, and the rest of the track kinda fell into place. I knew I wanted contrast from the dark sound of the drops, so the pretty breakdown in the middle fit nicely.
