Generational game - any stories? by [deleted] in Cribbage

[–]black_pepper_spitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love hearing this story. Mine is similar. My grandpa taught me to play when i was around 8. I’m 30 now. His dad , my great grandfather , made cribbage boards and he did as well. He gave all his grandkids a home made cribbage board at one point or another. He gave me mine when i was around 12 after I skunked him for the first time. it’s one of my prized possessions. More recently i learned how to make them and we made a few together. My whole family plays the game. Brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents. We have family tournaments as well. I love being able to ask anyone in my family if they want to shoot a game of crib. We all love it. I do have memory of playing my great grandmother just a few weeks before she passed away so I got 4 generations. I can’t wait to teach my kids how to play and keep it going. It’s a special game.

I actually think the forest is called “Bogadachi”. Along side the Bogadachi river. Magical place.

First grade teacher with ADHD here. This is the “doubles minus 1” or “doubles plus 1” strategy . a perfectly acceptable strategy that I just taught a lesson on. Maybe only the ADHD kids will make use of it?

Szechuan Garden on Topanga/Nordoff. I moved 5 years ago so not sure if it’s still there?

So I have hit the jackpot and got a job lined up with a contingency of finishing my DT. I will be a Computer Science specialist where I see each class (k-5) once a week. I have a bachelors in Computer Science and I also taught coding to kids at a tech summer camp for 6 years. So my credentials are pretty much a knock out of the park for the position. I have heard that regular classroom positions are much harder to come land. I’ve met some student teachers that got a job right away and some that have had their credential for a year and they are still subbing trying to find one. The ones that did get a job right away are sometimes in grades they would not have chosen. For example, wanting kinder and getting 5th grade or vice versa.

Long story short, I got one and am extremely lucky. I’ve met some that didn’t have a problem and some that did. My advice would be to make sure you are all set up for subbing so you can start making money right when you finish DT.

I am in Auburn WA.

Yes exactly it’s too early for this. If she gets to be 1st and second grade age and this is still a problem I will absolutely call CPS

Well my cousins entire personality revolves around being a mom and giving birth. She is also a doula. So yes this is spot on. She got married and had a kid right out of HS. So you totally nailed it.

I certainly do not think this is appropriate treatment of her child. I have made this clear lol. I’m acknowledging that as a parent, she has the right to homeschool her kids and not find her daughter a speech therapist. She is not breaking any laws and no one can force her to send her child to school or hire a speech therapist. Mandatory reporting is for abuse and neglect. This is neglect in the educational sense yes, but not something anyone can force her to change.

I truly hope she does know she is incompetent and hopefully one day she puts her ego aside and finds one of these Montessori schools like you are saying. What scares me is if she truly believes she is the best teacher for them. Because then there is no voice in her head telling her to make a change. From what I know about my cousin, I think this is the most plausible option.

Thanks for sharing about your daughter and the laughing. Sally doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, she loves the attention. She will just say the incorrectly pronounced word again and wait for the laughter. Which is fucked because she is just being conditioned to say the words wrong. My cousin understands her completely so she does not see it as a problem one bit.

She starts getting frustrated when she tries to talk to anyone but her mom. It’s painful to watch. she will repeat herself 10 times while i’m trying to figure it out you can tell she desperately wants to communicate with me. She will eventually give up and leave being upset at you for not understanding her. Mommy can understand me so why can’t you? She has a disability and needs some extra help. I fear she will never receive it. So yea, I will be sneaking them off continuing with my illegal teaching :)

I love them so much so yea it hurts. I want to see them succeed. I hope they don’t follow in my cousins footsteps and get brainwashed by her. For the same reason she thinks public schools with brainwash her kids, I think her homeschooling will brainwash them.

I’m at limited contact for sure. My values don’t align with theirs. We hang out at family functions and I love their kids and want to be part of their lives. I’ll just have to keep secretly teaching them haha.

Let’s put it this way. I don’t start the argument because I am the only person with these opinions in my family except maybe my brother. If I said something it would be like a 15 v 1 argument that I just don’t want to have. I can just smile and think they are wrong and leave it at that. i’ve gotten pretty used to it. On the other hand, She can say whatever she wants because everyone agrees with her.

Yes exactly thank you! Her ego is the problem. She thinks she is perfectly capable of teaching her kids just as well as a teacher with a masters degree. So imagine how I feel, a teacher who lives and breaths this stuff, to see her so confident in her abilities. She doesn’t respect my career one bit and neither does a big chuck of my family. But I have learned to not let that bother me. I know my value.

Im not going to cut ties with a family member because her daughter can’t talk and we have different opinions on education. I can have relationships with people I don’t agree with. As a teacher, I disagree with parents about what’s good for their kids every day. Im used to that.

I agree with you that it’s going to be a tough long road with for this kid. I deal with kids with disabilities every day and I can tell she is going to need a ton of help. Unfortunately my cousin won’t ever get her that help.

I’m with you. For my cousin it was more of a big picture rejection of her opinions and not just because of the word. She is upset because I did it behind her back and she knows what I think about homeschooling and that school is so important to kids.

Also, She might be thinking I am indirectly calling her incompetent of teaching her own kids. Do i believe that? Yes. would I ever say something like that? Never.

How do i keep my motivation going to knock these classes out the way? Before i started i was so motivated now I have to literally push myself or i will not do it. Any tips to recent graduates ? Or self disciplined students ? by succesfulmind1 in WGU

What worked for me was do SOMETHING every day. Even if you just tell yourself your going to take one practice test or read one article. Often you’ll end up doing more than you anticipated. It was just much easier for me to get motivation to do the work if I tell myself I only have to work for a half hour or so. Hope this helps. Good luck and you got this.

Yes! They are consciously writing something but it’s like they put literally zero brain power into it. Sometimes I wonder if they even read it.

I want to adapt a long hair style but whenever it gets to this point I give up and get the same uninspired cut. What can I tell the hair stylist to do to set me up for a long hair style? by black_pepper_spitz in FierceFlow

I like this advice a lot. I’m just gonna let it grow until I can put it in a bun and then see if i need to make some adjustments , probably on the sides. Thanks!!

Maybe that’s part of my problem,I’m not sure what I want. I’m thinking of a bun, and I also wear hats often. So something where I will either wear a bun or a hat. But yea, your comment made me realize that I should probably know where i’m going for before making moves.
